That totally sucks. Perhaps though you can discuss with the owner the reasons you & your day counterpart do the same job, yet he is your supervisor, instead of you each being equals - or is that exactly what this guy is a afraid of?

What is the nit picking that is going on? Does he have legitimate gripes?
One way I've found that works with insecure managers is to make a huge effort to be "team". If you have any chance to make the team look good, do it. Stop using the word "I" & make it to a "we". I realize this sounds a little lame but I notice that it does make a difference.
I agree that you shouldn't go to the owner of the company. It will come back.
