Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
You should be able to see a heartbeat by 6 weeks. I saw a HB at 5w5d. You said her periods are irregular - so could it be possible the dates are off? I wouldn't yet assume it's not a viable pregnancy.

Re: Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
I'd say she has to wait it out. She should have her beta tested twice, two days apart to see if her numbers are doubling.
When women are seeing an RE, they get a sono in the 5th week just to see that the pregnancy is in the uterus. Sometime in the middle of the 6th week is when they would first be able to detect a heartbeat. And it literally can change drastically in a day when it's so early on.
Measurements at that stage are so tiny that 5w5d and 5w2d could just be due to different machines and technicians. And either way, I wouldn't expect to see a heartbeat in the 5th week. Next week would be a different story.
So, again, she kind of just has to wait this out a few more days and see what's happening. I definitely wouldn't give up hope, though, if she's only 5 weeks along!

Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks and a couple of days and they were able to see the fetal pole and sac but it was not until six weeks and a couple of days that we could hear the heart beat. I had an sonogram every week from 5 weeks until 9 weeks when I "graduated" from my RE. I had blood work done to see that my hcg levels were increasing very early on.

Re: Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
at 6 weeks you should be able to see a heartbeat - at 5 weeks you dont always see it (with my son we did not see it at 5weeks, but we saw it at 6weeks.
But in the meantime, they should draw her blood twice (48 hours apart) and compare the beta numbers. If they are doubling within that tie period, that is a good sign that the pregnancy is viable. If they are not doubling (or coming close to doubling) that is a sign of a problem

Re: Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
How did the hospital determine how far along she was in her pregnancy? Last menstrual period? If so, maybe she just implanted late and is measuring behind because of that.
I had an internal sonogram at 7 weeks and we were able to very clearly see and hear the heartbeat. Was yours or hers external? Maybe that's why they had a hard time finding anything....
From what I've read they should be able to see the gestational sac and fetal pole at 5 weeks, but not a heartbeat.

she had an internal. Mine was internal at 7 weeks and we saw the heartbeat but that's way later than where she's at.
she hasn't had her Af since December!
Gotcha! It's so hard to tell with those irregular periods. My mother had the same issue- my brother was a BIG surprise! Best of luck to her!

Re: Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
at 5w3d you could see a small gestational sac. They measure how far along you are by the size of the sac.

Is it possible for there to be a mistake in the measurement?

Yes. But at that point it should be growing quickly. Mine was growing slow (and resulted in a MC).It was 5 1/2 mm one day and 8mm 3 days later. It would be really unlikely that the measurements would be that far off a few days later. ETA no fetal pole measured at either visit. Just a sac.

i think she has to wait it out. FWIW, we didn't hear our daughter's heartbeat until well 7-8weeks along

Crashing!!! I am NOT pregnant!!!
When I was about 5 or 6 weeks pregnant w my dd, I was told the pregnancy might not be viable since they couldn't see anything in the sac in the sono. After a week of agonizing and worrying, I went back around 7 weeks for a sono and they could see the embryo and heartbeat. They also checked my blood during that week to see if my hormone levels were going up, and they were. Good luck to your friend, it's torturous to wait to find out.
