1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

Obviously to each their own, but it seems like everyone really goes all out on here for their dc's 1st birthday party.

But us... we're having family over (maybe a few close friends) and a cake. That's it. I guess i just don't see the need to do more than that for a 1 year olds birthday.

Just curious if anyone else out there is keeping it small? Chat Icon

I haven't decided yet. I'd like to do a backyard type party and keep it small. But, then it gets into "where do you draw the line??" with family and even friends. So, I've decided not to think about it for a few more months! Chat Icon

You are not the only one. We are just having close family and friends over (next month) for some good Italian food and cake!

I will have bigger parties for DS once he is old enough to appreciate it, right now all who would appreciate it is us! Besides, we would have to rent a place since his b-day is in the dead of winter and we cannot do an outdoor party.

We kept it small, only invited family (which is small) and close friends. We did do at restaurant just b/c I was about 20 weeks prego at the time and didnt want to deal with the setting up and cleanning up... and catering.. I just wanted to enjoy the day with DD. It was great day.

We are only having a larger affair for DS because we didn't invite ANYONE to his Christening. And we haven't really had a celebration for him inviting all of his family.

Since we decided to do it at home and have a pool party. We figured catering it in wouldn't be too bad and there is no expense of a hall.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

i wouldnt say we are having a large party...we had to rent a small hall because our house wouldnt even fit immediate family so in the end it will be family and a few of our friends that have kids...around 30ppl

We're not sure if we are having anything at all for DS' 1st birthday but if we do, it will be very small.

Most likely, IMMEDIATE family only.

DS is a May baby, so we are only having immediate family over for a BBQ in the backyard. Between the 4 grandparents, aunts, uncles, & cousins it will come to 30 people. If we included extended family it would just be way to much. We're going to BBQ up some hamburgers & hotdogs, and get a carvel cake with Elmo on it. I don't even think we'll do favors since only a handful of kids will be there. I don't think there's such thing as to big or to small...to each his own.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

I can't decide and have to by like next week. My family is huge so I either go ALLLL out or small. I'm leaning toward grandparents and my/DH's siblings over for dinner & cake and maybe a little entertainment.

If I had a spring/summer baby I wouldn't think twice about doing at my mom's pool or in our yard.

I am having it at a firehouse with about 40 people most of it family and close friends not to crazy gonna try to keep it simple but nice. It is so true they really do not appreciate it yet. It is mostly for the family. He is my first Baby!

We are keeping it small. Just family and a few close friends. DD's birthday is in January so we are having it in our house.

That's what we've done for all their birthdays so far.

I was thinking about doing a Build A Bear party for dd's 4th birthday in Feb, but she clings to me the entire time at any birthday party we've been to so I'm not even bothering.

We went small too. I figure when he's older and he can appreciate it, maybe we'll go all out with a party, but this year he has no expectations.

We had his baptism around the same time, so we had family over for that (and celebrated his birthday too), then we had friends of ours over right around his birthday. We bought a cake, pizza, and some treats, but that was it. Very simple. And he loved it--all the attention, the cake, he had a great time.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

We had a big 1st bday party because there was no briss or baptism and much of our family hadn't really seen DS. We had about 100 people at a restaurant. For his 2nd bday it was just grandparents, immediate aunts and uncles (Dh and my siblings) and kids. We had a pirate themed party in the backyard and served pizza.

We did exactly what you are thinking of doing. It was great. Our DD's b-day is right after Christmas in the beginning of January and couldn't see doing any more than a small party.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

DH and I were just discussing this last night. After discussing many options we have decided to keep it to family and one really close friend. It will be about 30 adults and 10 children. We'll do something pretty low-key at home. We have a big backyard but the party will be in March, so we'll be in the house. We're thinking about some "entertainment" for the kids, though.

We come from very small families, so everything we have ever done has been intimate and small. We actually love it that we can do things small and enjoy every moment of the event.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

We decided to do small party for Kaydyn for her 1st birthday. We had a very big party for her christening and we really can't afford to have a big party right now with DH not working. So we're having about 30 ppl at a restaurant b/c our apt is too small to hold everyone.

We went small, and according to DH it was too big! Chat Icon Immediate family only (grandparents & siblings) was 20 people alone. We invited some close friends and ultimately had 28 people over for coffee and cake (oh, and Italian food I didn't tell anyone I was making).

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

We didnt do anything huge either, we had about 20 people, close friends and family for a few hours. IDK, if her bday was in the warmer months it might have been different.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

I'm not going all out for his party... but there will be a lot of people only because DH and I both have very large immediate families. DH is one of 7 siblings, all are married and most have kids. I also have a large family. So just keeping it immediate family is 40+ people! Chat Icon But it will be a backyard party.

Re: 1 yr birthday party... am i the only one who's going to have a small party?

That is all we did last year and this year as well. I am just excited my parents can celebrate with us this year since we are having it almost a week early.

I don't see the whole fuss myself but I don't condemn those who do it. I just don't have that kind of energy right after the holidays and my DD hates big parties anyhow.

you're not alone. ours will be family and a few close friends at a BBQ at our house probably on the 4th of july. i'm not into big 1st birthday parties--no entertainment, no blowups, etc. just family, friends, fun and food!

Our problem is we have a small apartment and wouldn't fit the party. If his birthday was in the summer I would without a doubt have a backyard party. I'm thinking about renting out the clubhouse at my moms townhouse...we'll see though. I definitely don't want to do a restaurant again...I would just rather not spend that much money.
