10 months and still wont hold her bottle

DD refuses to feed herself with her Dr. Browns bottle. I thought maybe it was too heavy for her - so I switched bottles, took the straw out of the Dr. Brown's bottle, gave her fewer ounces, tried using the sippy cup - nothing seems to work.

She is reaching all other milestones so I dont want to make that big a deal out of it - but I am a little frustrated at this. It's as if she's scared to lean her head back to drink from the bottle. We tried putting her in her reclining high chair and giving her the bottle - but she just throws it on the floor.

Any suggestions?

Chat Icon I'm interested to see the answers as well, although I'm sure she's prefectly fine Chat Icon My DD is 8 months and doesn't hold her own bottle either...never has. She will put her hands on it sometimes when I'm holding it, but if I take my hands off she just plays with it.

At 9 months I have to say (love him to pieces but) my son is so lazy with holding the bottle. He can do it...I've seen it but he prefers that we do it for him Chat Icon

I have put him on the floor reclined on a pillow (in front of the tv) and he has actually finished a whole bottle on his own. He does have trouble with putting his head back so he hasn't had much success sitting up.

I say just keep giving her opportunities to do it. Chat Icon

Right there with ya!

When my older DD was that age, I recall putting her in the Boppy in front of the TV and that worked. Honestly, though, it really doesn't bother me at ALL that Abby hasn't held her bottle...in fact, I haven't even tried the Boppy thing yet. I don't think holding the bottle is even a true milestone.

DS turned 11 months this weekend and he can but will not hold his own bottle. I finally found a sippy cut he likes but he is still figuring out how to drink out of it...Chat Icon Chat Icon

My DD didn't start holding her bottle until she was 11 months old. She could have done it earlier but she was lazy!Chat Icon

DS didn't hold his own until about 13-14 months. I wouldn't stress about that.

Re: 10 months and still wont hold her bottle

Thanks for all of your posts. I'll try the boppy and tv strategy - but I guess DD is just being lazy. I guess if I had someone who was willing to hold my bottle while I relaxed and drank, I'd be hesitant to give it up too!Chat Icon

Re: 10 months and still wont hold her bottle

Taylor will be 1 on Friday and I just recently got her to hold the bottle. It is out of pure laziness.
I guess you are never to young to figure out that if someone else will do the work why do it yourself.
She has been pretty good, but I still have to put her in her bouncy seat or hold her but if I put her hands on the bottle she will hold it.

Re: 10 months and still wont hold her bottle

DD held it at 7 months because I made her do it, lol.

I put her in her swing and put the bottle in her lap... I figured if she wants it bad enough she'll reach for it, and she did. I had to tip it up for her for like a week once she had it in her mouth, but she got the hang of it.

Ariel NEVER held her own bottle..flat out refused to do it. She could, of course, but just wouldnt. She could use a spoon, drink from a sippy, etc but would NOT hold her own bottle....Some kids just wont...the twins were holding their own bottles just a week shy of 4 months and Caden started about a week before his 6th month birthday (before that he wouldnt even put his hands on the bottle).

Re: 10 months and still wont hold her bottle

My DD never held her own bottle. But she was done with them at 13-14 months (thankfully.) I could not take holding it all the time for her anymore. Now she independently drinks her sippy cup with no problem.
