i think that's fine. I was a lifeguard for 7 years and saw kids around 10 years old get dropped off all the time. Many of the swim team kids would come early in the morning by themselves and hangout all day.
I personally spent all day at the pool as a kid... I would walk there every day and meet my friends there
This was me when I was a kid. Team practice early in the am and then I stayed at the pool all day. I walked there in the am and home in the evening. My mom worked and this was how I spent my summer when I was not at camp. I was even there on the weekends because that was when we had our meets. My mom had to schedule her wedding around meets one year.
Edit - I do think it has a lot to do with the kid, though. I can not imagine ever being able to do that with my son, he is not independent.
