"Illegal Immigrant Hunt" Game - and Protest - at NYU
What happens when the NYU College Republicans plan a questionable game? Hundreds of NYU students are planning to protest! The College Republicans had planned a "mock illegal immigrant" hunt in Washington Square Park - they were going to put a tag reading "illegal immigrant" on a member and have others, playing "INS" agents, to find him/her. The reward would be $50-100, plus knowing that you can find someone in 9.75 acre mostly-paved park.
NYU College Republicans president Sarah Chambers tells the Daily News, "It's not a racist event, first and foremost. Just because we don't want illegal immigrant being able to completely disregard the laws of our country doesn't make us racist." And she emphasized that the person playing the role of illegal immigrant will not be an actual illegal immigrant (too real?).
The protest - and game - will take place tomorrow at Washington Square Park, 11AM to 2PM. The students organizing the protest aren't from one group; according to a letter we got, they were "rallied together through the website Facebook.com by what some students have labeled a 'troubling','“racist' and 'dehumanizing' publicity stunt."

an inference on my part from the the whole "racist" thing.
in reality, there is no way to tell who is and isn't legal (unless you have access to the thousands of files laying around my office  )
eta: inference, meaning I subjectively pulled it out of my azz. I have no problem admitting to doing that.

I take offense to your statement.
I have five cousins, all college educated with advanced degrees and all who speak English who have been LEGALLY going through the visa/immigration process in Dublin for the last few years now.
They are highly trained for medical and technological jobs that not enough Americans are trained for or want to pursue. They would be an asset to our workforce and they can't get in. They cannot even get a visa to travel here because they have spent some time in the US in the last five years and had to go back when that time expired and are not allowed in again.
And BTW how many of the ancestors of LIF posters all came into this country legally or are all 100% American, meaning Native American.
I doubt my high school students would make such a sweeping statement about one ethnic group.
ETA: What the NYU students are doing is unbelievable. It's very ignorant and makes it very apparent that they need to spend a lot more time in class.

I am truly sorry you took offense to my statement...though I am not sure my statements warrant your ire...
firstly, it wasn't even a statement in fact on my part...I was being SARCASTIC and making a comment about people's conception of what an immigrant is (though I can see how that may not be clear, so I am happily explaining)
secondly, I wasn't making a SWEEPING statement about any one ethnic group.
thirdly, I AM a product of a legal and illegal family, so I don't really get huffy about these things. they are just facts o' life to me.
sorry to have so twisted your drawers.

I don't think she was trying to offend, she was saying that there are illegal immigrants from all countires in the US but for some reason the Mexicans are always the ones blamed.

well, I am sorry then. wasn't meant to be "rude". or even funny HA HA. I am laughing incredulously that it could be "offensive"
let me ask you this, if these NYU students where allowed to round up anyone in NYC that they suspected was illegal, what do you think they would look like?
THAT is my only point.
and it's a KNOWN fact that there are PLENTY of Irish illegals in Woodside.
