Anyone who is offended needs to understand Jessica's refernce in her post. She could have inserted ANY ethnicity, it was only to MAKE A POINT!!!!!

Sorry for even posting this thread. The point of it got COMPLETELY lost.
More than 300 students will be protesting the exercise this afternoon. I brought it up to showcase how we easily stereotype particular cultures into being "illegal" of "immigrant" when in reality no one can make such classifications simply by looking at someone.
The exercise proved to me a very large step in the wrong direction, ESPECIALLY for the open-minded students of NYU. As an alum I was disgraced to see this exercise in motion, but was pleased students were going to protest it.
I apologize for bringing such sensitive matters to these boards.

If anything, I am "bashing" the conception of who/what an immigrant is in this country.
Not that I am defending what these student proposed to do, but they were not talking about immigrants in general or one particular country of origin, but ILLEGAL immigration & the problem we have in this country.
And yes, all of my realtives came here legally and continue to live here legally. So to make the assumption that all immigrants are illegal or were at one point is unfounded IMO.
And I get that your initial response was sarcastic.
ETA: And I read other responses after this one, and I get that you were making a statement as to how ridiculous the students are to assume that they could visually identify who is legal & who is not. Sarcasm sometimes gets lost in the typing.....

I'm Irish, so my family is obviously Irish. I didn't take offense to your statement. Take out the word Irish and insert Muslims, would people feel the same?
And we should be able to discuss issues like this on the board. We can't always talk about celebs, fashion and weddings.

Why not just play Bounty Hunter? No one worries about offending criminals.

Excellent point.
While they are illegal, I see them as just trying to make a living for themselves & their families even if they are overseas. I may have spent too much time in the poverty stricken mountains of Mexico.

In response to the original post, I am not sure what the point of the "game" is. If the NYU Republican club wants to make a "statement" about illegal immigration, I think there are more productive ways to do so. If they want to discuss their views on illegal immigration, then they should do so in a mature and educated fashion. The game seems like they are just doing it to get a rise out of people and it accomplishes no purpose.

if people are here ILLEGALLY (meaning they aren't paying TAXES), why shouldnt the INS go after them?
Granted, a bunch of NYU students do need something better to do - but they didnt say they were huning for one particluar race as it was illuded to in a joke -
my family immigrated here, nothing wrong with that - but they did it legally.
I think our country has bigger problems (war??) than some college students being stupid (which they are)

Don't misunderstand - I'm not a fan of illegal immigration. I think you need to put a perspective on it. If no one hired them, they wouldn't come. I don't blame them for wanting the opportunity. I blame those willing to take advantage of them. If you ever get a chance, rent the movie Balseros. See what it means for an immigrant to get in a raft & try to make it to this country.
Our country has MANY problems. But since the President, Supreme Court & Congress aren't involved in the NYU stupidity, I see nothing wrong with bring it up on the board for discussion.

I think people should just relax and worry about other things..than worry about what people say about a particular ethnicity....we live in NY which is the mecca for immigrants (legal & illegal) and I am very surprised people react the way they do...
If I was offended every time people tell Polish jokes I would have killed half of NY....but I don't...
can't we just all get along??
oh and I forgot...we do have our 1st amendment that protects our freedom of speech so I guess the students have the right to voice their opinions (even if we disagree)...

I dont mind it being discussed at all.
i just dont know why people would prostest college students being stupid when there are otehr things to protest about.....
im all for immigration - if you want to live here you should be able to come - but many of them DO NOT pay taxes. you are right, people hire them, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

It's like a witch hunt. Yes, fine they are illegal and I agree they do not belong here, but they are here. You can't just hunt them down like savages. Do you know the chaos that would cause?
We are more civil than that. They are human beings just like us and even though they are not from this country they do have our rights until they leave this country.
Let the INS go after them, but students going after them, I'm sorry but I find that repulsive and in bad taste.

Honestly I think that just because you are not offended does not mean that no one should be offended. I do see your point, but I think it is in poor taste to tell someone what should offend them or not. JMO.
As another poster said, if I got offended anytime someone made an Italian/mafia joke I'd spend 1/2 my life offended, but I would never tell anyone else they should not be offended either.
