When I was 12 I babysat for a 2 month old and a 4 year old and they gave me $5/hour  I guess now the going rate would probably be $8-10/hr.

Is it a mother's helper type of thing?
If so, probably $6 per hour?
I'm no help if it's for regular babysitting. I would pay a 17 year old $8-10 per hour.

I feel 12 is too young for a babysitting.
I pay my mother helper (she is 16 BTW) $6/hour but if she does a good job, I give her extra once in a while.

I teach 13 year olds and I would not let most of them babysit alone.
For a mother's helper type thing, I agree with the others.

I started babysitting at 12 and for multiple small children. Judge on maturity NOT age. It turned into quite a paying gig for several years for about 12 kids in the neighborhood (4 families). Oldest child when I started was 7 years, youngest was 2 months.
Everyone paid differently, but it was always around $5-10/hour.

I would probally pay $8 an hour. Those who felt it necassary to comment on the fact that you feel 12 is too young, I don't remember the OP asking for that opinion. Different strokes for different folks.

ETA: I would pay 6-7 dollars an hour

I did not mean my post like that...
she asked what i would pay a 12yr old to babysit....the way I answered was because I would not pay them a regular rate cause I would not allow it.

OMG...drama over what to pay a 12 yr old... if shes old enough to watch the child/mature enough for YOU then I think she deserves what a 17/18 yr old get which would be 8-10 hr.

BTW she isn't twelve..she is 14..although that is young to some of you also...
Do you think I would leave my children with someone I wasn't comfortable with....
