I got the same ticket as your DH about 5 years ago same issue - I didn't see the sign until I got the ticket. I don't remember how much the fine was, but I went to the TOH court and they reduced it to about $65.

I had gotten one in Garden City a few years back for the same reason and it was $35. That seems ridiculously high!

At the time, I didn't even know what the sign meant. We don't have anything like that in Suffolk.

We have this in Bellmore. I hate it, because it's basically the ticket people are too lazy to walk to the back of your car to check for a sticker. And the signs aren't in the lot, they are in certain areas where you enter, and where I enter, there isn't a sign, just in main entrances.
