16 weeks blood tests....
They take alot of blood at the 16 weeks appointment i remember, then measure my belly and do the doppler but what do they test the blood for? I know they do the AFP test but what else?

my 16 week blood test was the 2nd part of the downs syndrome testing. that's all i know.

After my NT scan I was told our chance of Downs and of Trisomy 13/18 was < 1/10,000. (the lowest you can score)
The doctor said the 16w bloodwork/scan can make that ratio lower even further. I believe they also look for neural tube defects, but he said those are exceedingly rare now that people know to take folic acid. I'm not sure what part is the bloodwork and what part is the sono.
My OB told me that a 16w sono was optional but the lab has been encouraging it lately and it's another chance to see the baby and a way to find out the gender earlier. My original practice only did bloodwork at 16w.

It's usually called the quad screen or sequential screening. It is another diagnostic test like the 12 week nuchal one. This one tests for neural tube defects. There can be a lot of false positives with this one, which is why I opted out of doing it with my son and just opted out of it again yesterday with this one. They will be able to spot any potential problems at the 20-week anatomy scan, so I didn't feel it was necessary.
