Interesting topic for discussion

Wanna know what you all think about this -- all opinions welcome

I heard on the news this morning that some muslim football fans were at Giant Stadium on Sunday for the game. Bear in mind, that the President was in attendance.

Before the game began, these fans began to prostrate and pray to Allah (per their daily ritual). Fans around them became concerned and alerted security. The muslim fans were then removed from their seats and investigated. They weren't ejected, but were profiled. Everything turned out OK, but the fans are complaining of religious and racial discrimination.

What do you think? I, for one, totally agree with the action taken. Yes, you have a right to practice your religion and go where you want. But, did they honestly think they wouldn't be questioned given the current state of affairs and given the fact that President Bush was there. It would be one thing if they were sitting there minding their own business. Then i could see them complaining. These folks were praying prostrated and drawing attention to themselves.

Interesting

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

IMO, laying down in an aisle in giants stadium when the president is in the building is grounds for a questioning.

Better safe than sorry.

like you said don...given the current state of affairs, and the fact that the President was in attendance, I think the action taken was appropriate.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

Personally, I don't really think it's fair. Isn't there a security check when they come in? What did people think they were going to do - send bad mind messages to the president? (sorry, all I can picture is a scene from Harry Potter where there is someone in the quiddich stands mumbling incantations)

Although I do think people need to keep their eyes open, and in the state of the world today, I can understand people's concern, but taking them out as if they are criminals, IMO was unfair.

I agree with better safe than sorry.

I'm sorry, but 95% of the terrorists out there are Muslim. Not all muslims are terrorists, but most terrorists are muslim. I see nothing wrong with questioning them and racial profiling them.

I also think this should be done, even when the President is not there. How many people are in a football stadium? What if someone let a bomb go in there.

I'm sorry if I am very conservative about this. My family is Israeli and my SIL was shot at when a terrorist screamed "Allah Akbah" and begun shooting people all the stores on a popular shopping and tourist street in Jerusalem. I know people who were killed on busses, etc... It is a definite concern of mine.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

all valid points

my take is that i'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to practice their religion.

But, given the current state of affairs, and given the president being there, they should understand why they were questioned.

And yes, they do check at the gate, but with 50,000 fans, you can't possibly give everyone a thorough scan.

Had I been there, I think seeing that would have unnerved me, at the very least. Had it been five years ago, I would not have thought as much about it. But the President's presence and the current climate, IMO, justifies what happened.

It's sad that regular Muslims have to live with what has happened from the actions of a small number of people.

I would think if the president was there, they darn well should have checked everyone thoroughly. If not, that's just silly b/c at this state in the game, there are a lot of crazy Americans out there, and lot who have no love lost for the president.

But, I do just think to march them out of their seats like criminals is just wrong, and they would have to be foolish to have not expected a civil liberties problem with that. Again, JMO and I do understand peoples fears because I feel them myself.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

I agree that muslims have to pray at seveeral times of the day but actually doing it at a football game would have seemed a bit odd to me. I think they did the right thing by calling security, especially since the president was there.

Since the President was there, I thought they already would have been watched and quesioned more closely when they entered than everyone else. My question is why would they be bothered again, after they were let go? Unless they did see something suspicious?

I don't consider that suspicious behavior. I don't know a whole lot about Islam, just that prayer is mandatory several times a day. Its possible that security didn't know about the prayer rule, but shouldn't they have known about it? Chat Icon

I don't agree with it.

Muslims have to pray several times a day, no matter what they are doing and where they are. Unless they were lugging along large, uncessary packages or dressed in a way that suggests they are concealing something, I don't think it was necessary.

That aside, at most sports games, isn't everyones bag checked at the begining? I would think that on a day the President is there, they would have already been checked.

i agree...

Why should security know about their religious rituals or any other religious rituals for that matter? What they were doing was out of the ordinary and unusual behavior to those around them so they have every right to question it. ANY unusual or suspicious behavior should be questioned regardless of what it stems from.

When you are investigating terrorist behavior, you have a responsibility to learn about that particular group, the way they act, dress behave, worship etc. To not know and understand who you are looking for is irresponsible, b/c then you are looking at anyone and everyone and flinging unsubstantiated accusations around.

Who decides if it is unusual?

IMO this kind of praying isn't unusual at all...in fact it is common practice
