Why should security know about their religious rituals or any other religious rituals for that matter? What they were doing was out of the ordinary and unusual behavior to those around them so they have every right to question it. ANY unusual or suspicious behavior should be questioned regardless of what it stems from.

When you are investigating terrorist behavior, you have a responsibility to learn about that particular group, the way they act, dress behave, worship etc. To not know and understand who you are looking for is irresponsible, b/c then you are looking at anyone and everyone and flinging unsubstantiated accusations around.

They weren't investigating terrorist behavior, they were questioning reported unusual behavior. There's a big difference. Don't you think that security had an obligation to investigate the reported concerns of several people? They didn't arrest them, they merely questioned what was going on.

Who decides if it is unusual?

IMO this kind of praying isn't unusual at all...in fact it is common practice

Thats exactly my point. If I went to that game and made the sign of the Cross, I doubt anyone would have bothered me. Chat Icon

Before the game began, these fans began to prostrate and pray to Allah (per their daily ritual). Fans around them became concerned and alerted security.

let's say, for argument's sake, that security did NOTHING. what then would the rest of the fans have done? what kind of response would have been appropriate, given that the majority of the concerned fans outweighed the number of fans that were praying??

i think security had an obligation to investigate and question them. goes back to 'better safe then sorry'.

and in all honesty, if they were in my section, I would've freaked and alerted security, too.

I'm not saying that their praying is unusual behavior. Security investigated the reports by others about the unusual behavior. Don't you think that there is a responsibility of security to investigate reports made by several people?

I disagree. I doubt anyone was looking and saying, hey thats weird to be praying at a game. I really think they were target b/c it was Muslim prayer.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

Actually, in the Newsday article, it said that security received complaints that these people were taking pictures of the building structure, THEN laid down in the aisle to pray.

Does that change the situation for anyone?

Some people aren't familiar with Muslim customs and don't know what their prayer entails. I still think that security had an obligation to investigate the reports.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

I really wish Mohammed Atta and his crew had stopped to pray! who knows, had that happened on the morning of 9/11, and airport security responded in the same fashion as at the football game, maybe their concealed weapons would have been found, and things would've turned out a little differently.

just something to think about.

That is exactly why I said that they should be aware of some basic Muslim rules- so that they wold have known that the prayer is mandated and harmless.

Re: Interesting topic for discussion

taking pics of a football game and taking pics of the BUILDING STRUCTURE of the stadium are DEFINITELY different things.

I don't know about the White House in particular but you aren't allowed to take pictures of any of the city crossings including the tunnels or buildings like 1 Police Plaza.

regardless - it could have mattered greatly to the 2,986 families who lost loved ones on 9/11.

I have - last week. I was on the williamsburg bridge, and it was a beautiful, clear day. The police officers that were helping traffic merge due to the construction started SCREAMING at a woman that was hanging out of her window, trying to snap a pic of the skyline.

It is enforced regularly. Unfortunately, though, the terrorists are not stupid and are also very patient. They take home videos of their 'families' on vacation and will pan to buildings for a second at a time. It's not enough time to incriminate them in court but when edited together, it's more than enough to give them the information they need.

Nope. I went a year ago to DC and they had security all over the place. You could only get to a certain distance of the WH.
