Re: 1st birthday with poll- how much did/will u spend

We want to keep it small too, although DH has a large family (not many small kids at all though, so I'm not even going to have to worry about entertainment, thankfully!!). Since we didn't do a christening, guess we'll probably have to do the big family thing. But we'll do it outside at our house and have our mothers/etc make a bunch of stuff, maybe get a few trays of something from a deli/caterer.

I am hoping about 500.00 - we are renting out the club House in our development ($40.00). WE will have about 25 adults and 15 kids. Order in a hero, some dishes from Mama Lombardies, beer - soda, a cake, mabye get a clown from twinkle town and favors.

My thoughts too... I have 3 kids that will need to go to college eventually so thats where our extra money goes... not to a huge party they prolly won't remember.. thats JMO though

Small family parties for both of them. They were the only kids there, so no favors or anything. Under $500 each.

The party itself was under $500. We don't have family in NY so we traveled back home and had the party there.

We held the party at my dad's apartment complex's party room.

We made all the food. Ordered the cake from Costco - it was delicous!

We didn't hire entertainment. No need for it with the amount and ages of kids that were there. The kids were all under 3 years old and they had so much fun chasing each other and playing with the balloons.

We had a joint party with 2 other kids and we rented a venue with a bar...all in all we spent £27 each! Thats only $50 each! We didn't party to LI standards, but we had tons of food, good music, games, a singalong, a fantastic cake and a great time!

Re: 1st birthday with poll- how much did/will u spend

under $500

we catered food, had about 50 guests in our home... it was simple, but lots of fun.

my DS was born around halloween, so we had the kids dress up in their halloween costumes.

goody bags with items from the dollar store... silly putty and slinkys, etc...
also candy like sugar daddys, pixie stix, bazooka. the goody bags were mostly for the older kids and the parents of the babies...

I'm sensing a bit of judgement in people's comments with the "over 2K Chat Icon Chat Icon " I would NEVER say to anyone "Oh - you are only spending XX amount on a party" --- To each his own.

Not that I need to justify but:

Maybe Jack won't remember it, but it will be a great time had by all. He can watch the many videos that I'm sure will be taken that day.

To me - yes - 2K is alot of money (and, it's annoying that NY is so expensive) and it's only one day - and he will not remember it - but at the end of the day it's not about the money being spent - it's about the memory of it - and the good time spent with friends and family celebrating my baby's first year of life.

I'm really not trying to turn it sour - the comments on the money people were spending just started to get to me.

Like I said, I would never say to anyone "oh - you ONLY spent $50 dollars on your childs birthday party" --- it's the same exact thing.

That's not my style - nor my place. I don't know people's finances - nor do I know how big their families are - or how many friends they plan on inviting. Everyone should do what they can do and what they want to do - without people judging.

That's all I'm trying to say! Chat Icon

Diana..like you, I come from a big family. No matter how small/casual you try to make the party/event it will always cost more money and it's no one's business but you and dh's~

ITA with both of you. I think that we all sometime forget that there is more to it than what is on the surface. If I only had 25 people coming to the party my answer would have been completely different but the fact is that we have a large family and are very fortunate to have a lot of really good friends that play a roll in our child's life. My budget does not consist of extravagant entertainment or lavish food selections...it's pretty basic but for 100+ people...that's actually about $20 a person which is less than what we have spent on other events.

I hate going further because no one should be made to feel that they have to defend their choices.

Re: 1st birthday with poll- how much did/will u spend

Tiny party at our home- 8 guests total besides us.
Dinner and birthday cake
Pork roast, mashed potatos, salad and veggies. Made the cake myself.
Simple decorations from the dollar store
No favors
Cost about $60 for everything

It was a wonderful party but I wish I had the food catered so I could have enjoyed it more. It didn't help that all the guest came an hour late so it ran right into dinner. Chat Icon

Oh, and believe me I wish it was a bigger party- I really missed having my family nearby for this day. Chat Icon

I COMPLETELY agree. My DD's 1st party was about $5,000.00. I don't care what others do, i only care what i do for my kids. I know she won't remember it but now that she is 3, she plays her video and dances along and LOVES her bday party. I had 150 people at a catering hall with DJ, Food, a professional photographer, Wild Rose video was the videographer etc. And if she smiled just once on her big day, than that makes it all worth it. I love parties, love throwing them and love seeing all my loved ones togetehr to honor such a special person in our lives. I want her to know when she grows up just how special she is to me. Special can mean a cake and 3 people over to some, or a big bash for others. It's all up to the individual. And the same for my DS. =)

Re: 1st birthday with poll- how much did/will u spend

we had about 50 people and spent under 500.

i decorated the party in "dora theme"

For food we had..."1" hero, penne ala vodka, regular pizza, sicilian pizza, garlic knots, salad, mac salad, potato sald

Plus drinks & beer

The cake was made by DH's grandmother.

eta: it was in the backyard with the pool open and a pinata.

We have very similar scenarios, and unfortunately the time of year that our sons were born, things are more expensive in that there are "bigger" parties being booked.

One restaurant that I went to asked if I would have it earlier in April b/c they needed more bookings for that month & would have worked with me on the price....um, but he won't be 1 yet!

About 1500-2000. I plan on renting a hall ordering food entertainment etc. I'm big into the decorations so I'm sure thats where most of my $$ will go.
