Pet store in Sunrise Mall
Hello. I am just slightly educating my friend on puppy mills...but there is only so much I know. She fell in love with a chuwawa at the Sunrise Mall, in "The Pet Company". I've never been there before. She said that they have signs that say some animals are from NSAL and that the store is really clean. Also she read that not all pet stores are puppy mill dogs. Do you know anything about this store? Thanks!

I stepped into that store about 2 years ago and I was not impressed. I thought that the dogs were lethargic and that dogs that had signs on their cages saying they were beagles looked more like mixes of some sort. I was not in the market for a dog, so I never fully investigated. I was just popping in b/c I had started to read about pet stores and was curious. If the dog is placed there by NSAL, that should be easy to trace. NSAL will have paperwork for the adoption.

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
Tell her to stay away from those kinds of places. The dogs are from puppy mills.
If she wants a chi, tell her to check out petfinders.com. There are so many chi's up for adoption. Remember- young adult and adult dogs make great pets too(already trained and have developed their personalities).

A reputable breeder would probably be less $$ than a pet store - and you get a lot more garantees......

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
The Pet Company gets their dogs from Puppy Mills. A friend of mine got her MinPin from there and she is from a mill in Ohio. The only dogs they would possibly have from NSAL would be marked as such and would most likely be mutts.
Try contacting this woman...she is recommended by the AKC for Chihuahua Breeders....

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
dumb question...
Why not call NSAL and confirm??
I got my cat from a evil damning pet store, so what? It was from Last Hope and that's who I actually had to adopt through.
Call and confirm before tossing the idea out.
Just my $.02

That's different...I know Last Hope has their cats in Petco's and Petsmart's and you are adopting through the agency. My guess is that The Pet Company, which is a chain and sells mill puppies, is telling the customers that to get rid of the dogs more easily. But, as I said...she could easily confirm if they are from NSAL and if so - adopt away!

right - last hope is totally different. my SIL adopted a kitty from last hope. the organization just puts their cats in petco and petsmart to get the word out to a broader spectrum of people - a lot more people come in and out of petsmart and petco than go into their little office on jericho in huntington - so it's just a better way of "marketing" so that the cats will get adopted - more exposure, if you will. but it's a great organization.

Thanks for the info. Well, this particular puppy isn't from NSAL, she was just saying how they have signs that some of them are from NSAL. I will give her all of the information!

I wouldn't trust any pet store. No matter what they employees or signs say. ITA. And I wonder if NSAL would adopt out to them. I am not sure if they have an adopted share program with them. I know another large but private store on LI recently tried to pose some of their PM dogs as rescue just to "clear out their inventory" to make room for more PM puppies. They were caught & closed.
Any store that says not all their dogs are from PMs are lying - plain and simple. Either that or they are using a local BYB, which is just as bad. No reputable breeder will sell their litters to a store.
for trying to spread the education!

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
Okay, I have relayed everyone's responses and this is her latest. Anything I should tell her?
So, I called the pet store to ask more about the puppies, they are 2 1/2 months and one is from Oklahoma and one is from Missouri, so she said all of the breeders info, # and address is on their papers, so does that mean its legite, or are those "breeders" sometimes puppy mills? Its so hard to know whats right, because did you see the other thing I sent you, that says its wrong to think all puppy stores get their dogs from puppy mills, that alot get them from legite breeders.... AND, how am I helping to stop puppy mills by not buying the dog I love, because someone else is DEF. gonna buy him if we don't. And that one person that wrote back on the site, was the only one who talked about that specific store, and she said as far as she knew they were not from mills....

not to rehash all of this again, but reputable breeders do not give their puppy to be sold at pet stores, period
ETA: And yes, those "breeders" are puppy mills...please tell her to get one directly from a reputable breeder if she has her heart set on a chi

Okay...I'm going to try to do this one at a time. Most breeders in Missouri and Oklahoma are Puppy Mill breeders. Misty is from Oklahoma. Although there is a name, address and # on the papers this does not make them a legitimate breeder. Most times, after you buy the puppy, you can't even register it through the AKC because the litters aren't registered into the AKC. The Pet Company is a chain store - which enhances the fact that they are buying from mills, since the parent company is just ordering dogs from various places. No legitimate breeder would EVER send their puppies to a pet store...it's just not done. There's no way to screen the families that are buying the dog.
As far as if she doesn't buy the puppy, someone else may...yes, that could be true - but the harder it is for them to sell the dog, the less likely they are to buy more which ends up hurting the mill and putting them under.
If she really wants a chihuahua - give her the info I supplied earlier in the thread. The woman is in Pt. Jeff and is highly recommended by the AKC - she could even ask this woman questions about the store and get better answers. Plus, the woman can recommend her to a good chihuahua breeder on Long Island.
Also, copy, paste and send her the pinned thread at the top.....
Lastly, I can't thank you enough for doing your best to educate her - no matter what she does in the long run, you did your best!

Given the combination of the pus being from 2 main states that have hot beds of PMs, and the fact that they are not even of the age that a reputable breeder would whelp their dogs, I'd say this guarantees that they are PM.
PMs ALWAYS pose as legitimate breeders, that is why the education is so important
Kudos for taking the time to do the research

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
It seems she is in love with this one puppy and believes the one site she found that says not all puppies at pet stores are from PM's.
She said she did a search on the BBB and didn't find anything and assumes nobody complained about their dogs being sick.

She said she did a search on the BBB and didn't find anything and assumes nobody complained about their dogs being sick. The BBB is not the resource to contact regarding this type of matter. it can be very hard to prove where responsibility lies, and the pet stores generally blame poor care on the part of the new owner as the reason for illness. And there have been numerous complaints against The Pet Company over the years.
I give you credit for trying, it is hard to convince someone when they see that one face and think it is the dog for you
I'd love to know what site claims not all Pet Store dogs are PM dogs :( Well they are also BYB dogs, so maybe that is what they mean?

I am sorry your friend is being blindsighted by false information. I applaud you for trying to show her otherwise.
I would not go to the BBB concerning a store selling living things.

BTW, all I did was google '"The Pet Company" puppy mills' and came up with at least 8 pages of complaints such as these...proof enough that they have puppy mill puppies.
