Okay...try this...
Send her this Link
and this Link
and this Link

BTW, all I did was google '"The Pet Company" puppy mills' and came up with at least 8 pages of complaints such as these...proof enough that they have puppy mill puppies. Excellent sleuthing!
Wow! Plenty of proof. There is one in Roosevelt Field mall. One time I went in and told the workers that they puppies had poop on them, sitting on it, etc. It was so sad.
We really need to shut down these pet stores and thus the mills will stop as well. This is sickening.

Years ago there was a Petland Discounts in the sunrise mall & they used to sell puppies and kittens. One day my mom went in there to get food or something for our dog & saw what a terrible condition the dogs & cats were being kept & called animal control. They went, issued a fine and a date to which the cages & conditions must be brought to standard. When they went back the conditions were no better and they rescued all of the animals in cages. That Petland never sold pets after that, and soon after more complaints were coming in from other petland stores on LI & now as far as I know none of them sell dogs or cats anymore.

She said that none of those speak of the Sunrise Mall location. Is Sunrise Mall in Bayshore? I thought it was.

Regardless, it is the same company despite the location, with the same deceitful practices.

This passage disturbs me on so many levels.....it makes it seem like BYBs are OK, and that they are not detrimental to the animal population
" In the last decade of the 20th Century, activist groups began to broaden the term to cover just about any kennel that they didn't like. As a result, commercial kennels and hobby breeders with more than an arbitrary number of dogs or litters have become targets for anti-breeding groups that lobby for laws to restrict these law-abiding operations. These organizations stir up public support for breeding restrictions and high license fees by deliberately blurring the lines between responsible breeding operations and real puppy mills. They use emotional rhetoric and pictures of dirty kennels and sickly dogs to imply that most or all breeders will subject their dogs to abusive lives unless they are regulated."
This is such a contorted view. How the heck are we supposed to believe that "breeding operations" are for the benefit of the breed, or better yet, the dogs themselves. I am ENRAGED by this....just plain enraged.
Although I do think that to someone outside of the community might take these statements as truths, it appears to me that the person(s) writing this is doing so to thwart the ever-evolving anti-PM efforts. There are even "fake" Kennel Clubs created FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE of helping PMS & BYBs to appear legitimate to the untrained eye.
This actually made my head hurt. This is not a reliable source, and to be honest I wish she would take the many other websites seriously. This one that supports her interest seems to be borne of a PM or BYB support...which is big business in this country for many.

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
I read more about the source. It is in Cincinnati, and used to be a strictly print publication. Like most print media, they are supported not by their subscribers, but by their advertisers. Unfortunately in that area of the country, there are many proven and multiple offending PMs, which I am almost certain would have advertised in their publication. It seems as though this article was to appease their advertisers.
The problem with most print is that it will roll over for their advertisers, or face the reality that they may cease to exist if they tick-off and abandon the interests of their advertisers.

That article is so vague it's ridiculous...and as another poster said - Just because the Sunrise Mall location isn't named means nothing...it's a fairly new franchise (less than a year old) and the fact that their other stores have gotten such bad reviews should scare her off. Honestly, you have done so much to advise her...there are some people who refuse to be educated. Trust me, one of my best friends has ignored any and all of my dog advice over the years...there's no way to force them to do what is right.

Besides...in the articles I was reading, The Pet Company uses puppy brokers so it's harder to trace them back to the original mill.

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
I am the friend who is interested in buying a puppy from a pet store...thank you to everyone for spending your time answering my questions. As for the people who think I refuse to be educated....isn't that exactly what I AM doing, I never heard of puppy mills before this. So I don't just believe everything someone tells me or that I read, do you?! I am sorry I fell in love with a puppy from a pet store, does that make me a bad person?! Also, The Pet Company in the Sunrise Mall has been there way more then a year, I have been going there with my children for years, and the place is always clean, the dogs are held and played with, and it never smells. I am aware this does not mean they don't come from puppy mills, and that is why I am trying to do some research, because no matter what now, I can't help that I've already fallen in love with this puppy!

I totally understand that you have fallen in love with this puppy and if you end up buying him/her we will help you as much as possible. However, after reading those articles about the chain of Pet Company stores, how can you still believe the puppies don't come from mills? I'm the one who said that store was there less than a year and honestly, I don't remember seeing it a year ago during the holidays but I could be wrong. However, if the store 10 miles away is selling puppies with all kinds of issues, what makes you think this one isn't? And if this puppy that you want to buy ends up with serious health issues, are you prepared to spend that kind of money? Besides, the old argument about Puppy Mills and supporting them...think about what is going to happen with you and your children if this dog ends up seriously ill. I still would recommend you call the lady in Pt. Jeff that I recommended earlier in this thread. She is highly recommended by the AKC and she could really explain things to you, plus she can recommend a breeder in the area that will give you a pup with a guarantee. Good luck with whatever you decide....

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
ok, here's what I found out, the Breeder is Gloria Still in MO, when I googled her it looks like a reputable breeder and the dogs look well taken care of. They even have pics of where the dogs stay. I don't know if I seem annoying because to you guys I should just go to a breeder....but its this specific puppy that I love. I don't see any complaints or anything on this person or her place....

Well said. I know it must be hard to see that cute pup in the store...but it is even harder to think of the mom's in the mills or if that cute puppy gets sick on you in a couple mths/years time.

and in addition, REPUTABLE breeders will not sell their dogs to brokers or pet stores.
I definitely understand you have fallen in love with this dog, but please think about its mother and the other dogs you will be hurting if you decide to purchase this puppy.
Like a PP said, we will give you advice and support if you do bring the puppy home, but we really wish you would reconisder.

Sadly most of the "breeders" in MO are back yard breeders.

What service does she use for her papers?
Like the PP have said, it's a big red flag when the breeder is from MO. Additionally, most breeders worth their weight, wouldn't ship puppies at this time of year because of weather conditions. Be careful what you find with googling...they put out there what they want you to see.

I'm sorry, but did you look at the pics of the kennel? No reputable breeder would house their dogs seperate from them in sheds with ramps. How much interaction with people do you think they get.
That is definitely a puppy mill - maybe not as horrible as most, but then again those are the pics they choose to put up...but still a puppy mill.
As this Link shows - Missouri is considered the leading puppy mill state.

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
Is this the place you are talking about? http://www.stillkennel.com/index.php
They SELL several kinds of dogs. AND they keep them in SHEDS. SORRY but that screams BYB
No real breeder would do that.
Notice how you don't see inside those sheds IMAGINE what they look like
I also believe they will allow you to charge them and they will ship them to you, NO good

Re: Pet store in Sunrise Mall
I am sorry, but I don't see anything wrong with the dogs being in kennels or cages. They are animals, and they live on a farm....As long as those dogs are fed and given water, not abused and taken care of, I don't see anything wrong with it.
