Opening food in a grocery store to snack on while you shop...yay or nay?

Just curious. I say a big fat NAY.

I hate when people need a snack that badly that they have to eat while they shop.

And what is worse is seeing packaged opened and half eaten laying around stores (once in a while i see that!).

Just crossed my mind after all the grocery store talk, lol!

Edited to add...the only time i think this would be acceptable is if a child is having a complete meltdown and you need to give them something (and of course then pay for it)

Nay! Seriously unless you are diabetic and your insulin is dropping I'm pretty sure everyone will make it a 1/2 hour until they leave the store.

I'd say NAY for me BUT I could care less when I see people doing it (if they're gonna buy it of course). But I do remember as little girl, sitting in the cart and my mom opening a box of crackers for me....I'm sure when I have kids, I'll do the sameChat Icon

I wouldn't personally do it, but I agree about doing it for kids to help get through the shopping. It doesn't bother me unless the wrappers aren't discarded properly or if they don't pay for it.

The only thing i've opened while in the store--i think was a bottle of water when i was in target from those fridges by their check out. it was effing hot as balls outside--and when i went inside i was thirsty....and grabbed a drink and had it while i shopped...but i definitely paid for it.

snacks itself--nope never have done that

I say nay.
However, I have been guilty of taking a diet pepsi from the cooler near the registers while I'm waiting on line, and then pay for the bottle when it's my turn.

Nay. I have opened a box of crackers that were already in my basket when ds threw a fit b/c he saw them.

I remember one time on Z100 Danielle said she gives her dc a banana to eat while they are walking around. That really annoys me, b/c you pay for fruit by the weight, so that seems like stealing to me. Chat Icon

Lol...its funny you said that about grapes. B/c while I don't think that would irritate me that much, DH hates to see people sampling fruit. We saw a lady once pop about 10 grapes into her mouth, wipe her hands off on the side of her pants and walk away.

We didn't buy any grapes that day, lol...

I have snacked before while shopping, but of course I buy whatever it is. Now that i have DS, sncking is how I get through my food shopping. It's the only way to keep him put. I actually wait until snack time to even go shopping.

no I don't.

and right now, I am saying I won't open anything for my kids either. I don't plan on using food as a sedative.

Nay--I see this many times in the bakery department. The children seem well behaved (no sign of meltdowns) and mom will go into the cookie case and hand each child a cookie. I wonder if the mom will tell the cashier that three cookies were eaten. I would imagine it might slip your mind as you're loading up your groceries at the checkout.

I would feel weird opening a bag of Doritos and snacking while shopping. Although, when I go to the bodega and order an egg sandwich, I will pour my coffee and start to drink it while I wait.

As an adult I would never do this. BUT I do remember as a kid I would go to the store with my grandma and she would give me peanuts from the barrel. She said they were free, and I didn't realize until later on that I was actually stealing Chat Icon

It depends...

Will you have your dog with you or not? Will your dog have already eaten and done it's business? Chat Icon

I kid, I kid...

Seriously, I see nothing wrong with it if it's in the instance where shopping has taken a little longer than expected and you have a little one with you who is hungry.

If you're two grown adults? No way!!!

Same here ... I have done this on more than one occasion. BUT only from the drink fridges in the check out aisles, never just while walking around the store during the shopping trip.

I figure if I'm gonna pay like 3 times the regular price of the drink for the convenience of it being refrigerated and not having to buy a 6 pack or 12 pack, then its considered acceptable Chat Icon

DH doesn't agree, and won't participate ... he will wait until we have paid for the drink are done checking out, and are walking out of the store.

Neither of us would consider snacking while walking through the store, though the 2 scenarios mentioned (melting-down-child or diabetic-with-insulin-dropping) are acceptable loop holes to me.

I agree about the banana thing being stealing since they are priced based on weight. Chat Icon
