I wouldn't personally do it, but I agree about doing it for kids to help get through the shopping. It doesn't bother me unless the wrappers aren't discarded properly or if they don't pay for it.

ditto!

NAY!

I was just in the supermarket this weekend.........when a lady had her kid in the grocery part of the shopping cart. He was sitting Indian Style eating a HUGE bag of Cheez Doodles.

Never for myself, but once, when Alex was having a tremendous meltdown in the supermarket, I opened a bag of bamba for her Chat Icon

I don't eat in the store and I don't care if other people do as long as it's not something sold by weight.

no I don't.

and right now, I am saying I won't open anything for my kids either. I don't plan on using food as a sedative.

I didn't plan to use food as a seditive but unfortunately I now do Chat Icon

My child is prone to screaming out of nowhere...that shrill, shrieking horrific scream that before a child i looked around to see who the hell was beating their kid, lol.

Shaking a tub of cheerios in his face stops it pretty quick! lol!

Nay. My mom never opened any food for us we had to wait until we got home she said if you didn't pay for it you don't own it yet. as for sampling fruit that skeeves me out. I'm sure besides the pesticides and dirt from the truck and crate the fruit was shipped in about 500 people have touched it before I willChat Icon

I've definitely snacked while shopping. Especially now that I'm pregnant - in the 1st trimester I had to eat constantly to avoid nausea - and now in the 3rd trimester I just need to eat and drink.

I would never snack on something that you pay for by weight...and I would never leave an empty bag on the shelf. My days of 5-finger discounts are long gone Chat Icon

I guess I'm missing why this is so frowned upon. Chat Icon

I guess its one of these things that its like....well grocery trips are usually not more than an hour, right? So why not wait until you get home to eat? (not specifically referring to you, just stating why it irks some people).

I would think that if a person needed to eat so often they would bring their own candy bar or snack with them. I just don't like seeing someone grab chips or pretzels, start crunching away as they shop..something about it just irks me...it's not officially THEIRS yet...they have not paid for it, although most people prob will I bet there are many that eat, then leave what is left.

I just don't get the need to eat while in a grocery store unless for the reasons previously listed.

Nope. Never.

I also wouldn't let me kids do it. I think if they're having a tantrum, giving them a cookie reinforces the idea that tantrums work.

I know when my kids have last eaten. So if they're that hungry, we eat before shopping.

eta. for me it's a matter of dropping crumbs on the floor & being polite. As for sampling food before buying, I don't agree with it unless they have a sample cart out.

The only thing i've opened while in the store--i think was a bottle of water when i was in target from those fridges by their check out. it was effing hot as balls outside--and when i went inside i was thirsty....and grabbed a drink and had it while i shopped...but i definitely paid for it.

snacks itself--nope never have done that

Same with me......oh wait a minute, I think I've been guilty of grabbing one or two grapes from the bag....before buying it.....Chat Icon I'm so ashamed....

I have done it before. I don't do it often. I think the last time was when I was pregnant and I thought I was going to pass out. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it's not a weighed item and you pay for it when you leave. You never know, that person who does it may need it.

Normally, I have a snack in my bag for DD, but I did open a bag of graham crackers in a pinch once. She's 15mo and wanting to run and climb all the time. It's either pacify her with some crackers for 5 minutes while I pay or wrestle her down in the cart and hold up the cashier line.

It's not like I'm giving her a candy bar and she could use the healthy snack.

I wonder, do people think it's bad to open a snack from home and have DC eat it while you shop?

ETA: I do think there is an age limit where kids are concerned. My DD is too young to understand she has to contain herself until we get to the car. I'll certainly do my best to teach her it's wrong to open food up in the store when you don't really need it when the time comes.

doesn't bother me at all, as long as it's paid for at the checkout line.

Adults doing it - Nay (I just don't see the need. Providing they pay for it and don't make a mess, I guess I can't really say it bothers me. I'd just find it odd.)
Adults grabbing / drinking soda or water out of the fridge at the check out -- fine by me as long as they pay for it (Not sure why I feel it's different from the food - I just do...)
Sampling the fruit - Nay (just ew Chat Icon)

Children - doesn't bother me so long as they aren't making a mess someone else has to clean up and the item is paid for at check out. I don't think a box of animal crackers to keep a child quiet and occupied while a parent shops is a big deal.

Re: Opening food in a grocery store to snack on while you shop...yay or nay?

I don't go to the store hungry - so this is not something I would do. But if I plan on paying for it I don't see the problem.

I often will grab a bottle of water and drink it while I am shopping. I always pay for it when I check out.

I have to say - I never really noticed anyone doing this. Maybe I am just oblivious.

I do Chat Icon I am pregnant so sometimes, I just NEED to eat! It is typically just chips though, definitely nothing that needs to be weighed. I also do it for DS when we are out if I didn't bring something especially for him to snack on.
I definitely do it with drinks!

EDT: I always pay for the opened item first so I don't forget!

Re: Opening food in a grocery store to snack on while you shop...yay or nay?

This is one of my pet peeves...I think its so wrong to walk around eating things from the shelves - REGRADLESS if you are going to buy them - you haven't bought them yet - so technically - the item isn't yours...EAT/DRINK before you shop or wait until you get home...

I agree with another poster on here who said - giving children food to calm their tantrums is like reinforcing the tantrum...everytime you walk into the grocery store - that child knows what to do to get you to give them a cookie or whatever it is...

Sorry for coming off strong on this...but I really really really hate this...
