PLEASE READ: If this is for real I want to help!
I was searching craig's list and I came across this post:
Mom in need of help
I have no way of knowing if this is for real, but I was so sad reading this because I am in the middle of planning DS's 1st birthday and I know how she must feel when she says she'd like to do something special.
Do you think this is for real? Maybe I should call and check it out - but what could I say?

Oh my gosh, that breaks my heart. I don't know how you can find out if that is real, but it leads me to believe it is as she is not asking for money to buy things, she is asking for actual donations of clothes, toys, cake, etc.
If you find out more information about this, please keep us updated and I would like to send some items if I can.

i dont know if its for real, but if it were me posting that,i would sell my computer to buy what my child needs..i wouldnt post an ad,i would sell my pc..

I don't know. I tend to be skeptical and a cynic about things. maybe she is only asking for donations and not money, but who's to say that she is not going to turn around and sell everything she got on Craigslist or Ebay or whatever.
Posting on craigslist seems off to me.
If I were in the same situation, I think the first thing I would do would be to go to a local church and say exactly what was said in the email and see if the church had anything they could donate to her.
I gave a teenage girl in Penn station money once bc she said she was robbed and had no money to get back home and needed to call her parents to wire her money. Five minutes later I saw her hand the money to someone was clearly her pimp or dealer.
I'm not very trusting of people and think there are other avenues if you are really in need.
sorry if this sounds a bit harsh.

I really hate it when people throw in the computer garbage. She could be at the library, or at work, or on a friend's computer. OR she could have a totally obsolete computer that is worth NOTHING and it's a valuable source of information, etc. for her and her children. I think we need to think before we judge.
I am going to email her to get more information and an address to send stuff to.

Wow. Heartbreaking. I agree with the above poster, you never know where she went on the computer. When I moved out to the midwest, I was laid off less than a year later. I used my VERY old computer (which was donated to me) to help me search for a job back in NY. When I left Iowa, I sold the entire system for $100. That doesn't go too far.
Let us know what's going on. I am interested!

I'm not trying to judge her,she may be telling the truth, A couple of years ago,we saw an ad,a woman asked for a free car,for work,We had a Honda that we didnt want anymore,we called the lady and said she can have it,she asked us to bring it to her,we said ok.When we got there,There was 3 nice cars in the drive way,she said those were friends cars. Nice house etc. We were still giving the car to her,she looked in side the car and said,the seats are torn,the radio is broke too.. she was ungrateful, we decided to donate the car to a church instead.I'm not saying this woman is lieing,i just had a bad experience,so I'm cautious now.

...because what you posted was pretty ignorant without knowing the entire situation and if there is no computer (or anything else) to sell, it really doesn't make a lot of sense. Sometimes you do what you have to do and fortunately for her, the OP posted this on our board and her daughter will have a nice birthday because of many kind people

kind of hard to look for a job in today's world with out either of those two things
