3yr old just diagnosed w peanut allergy yesterday

I'm really upset hearing that our fears have been confirmed....we gave my daughter peanut butter a lil before 2yrs old ....she spit it out bc she didnt like it and so she really only had residual in her mouth and her eye blew up she got hives on her face and arm....the rest of the yr i just watched her and kept her away from it as per the doctor until she turned 3 this wknd she got the blood test to confirm it.....I trust my house is very safe but what worries me and make me sick is eating out, going to others houses, birthday parties etc etc....

so anyone that has experience with this allergy can you please give me advice and suggestions on how to handle the allergy while being out?

tia

My almost 3 yr old has a peanut allergy as well. Luckily, most things are NOT made with peanut these days. The two things I watch out for are friend items, just in case they fry in peanut oil. Also I know of a pizza place that puts peanut oil on their doughChat Icon All store bought items will list if they are made with peanuts or made in a factory where peanuts are used too. Try soy butter or sunflower seed butterChat Icon

you're so right about most things not being made w peanuts these days and the labels on store bought things put my mind at ease too....but like you said its really eating out, which honestly we dont do often but for dinner parties with family or lunch out with friends or birthday parties I guess that's where my anxiety really starts, so I figured I would make this post and see if anyone has any ins and outs of eating out etc with the allergy ya know? I dont know I think bc its so fresh from yesterday I'm still just feeling overwhelmed by it Chat Icon thanks for your response Chat Icon

My 2 yr old DS was diagnosed with Peanut, Pistachio, and Cashew allergy when we gave him nuts on his 2nd bday! Chat Icon Chat Icon

But honestly over the last year it hasn't been hard at all! I thought it would be worse....bec we are a peanut LOVING family...but I still keep peanut butter in the house...and my DH has almonds all the way up on the top shelf of pantry that he treats himself after DS goes to bed.

I even give his sister peanut and butter jelly sandwiches for lunch...and just make sure his seat is far enough away from her! Thank god because he only had the one reaction it is not severe where he can still be around it...I guess it is only when ingested..and that hasnt happened since the 1st and only time!

I carry benedryl and an epi-pen where ever we go and KNOCK ON WOOD we haven't had to use either for the year we have known! So many things are labeled...and it helps that if peanuts are in the ingredient it is in bold type! WE havent had any problems at restaurants, take-outs and family parties..I usually just ask what we should stay away from when dessert is served!

I wouldnt stress *too much..(I know easier said than done) But you'll just make yourself crazy! I feel like it is a lot easier than it could be these days!

Good luck! Hopefully your experience goes as well as mine has gone so far! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you so much for sharing your experience....makes sense to ask when you're at restaurants, what to stay away from.....i actually just say online allergy cards that you can give the chef at restaurants as a reminder but i dont know how well that would work or if its worth it.....dont know just overwhelmed, thanks for your positivity though makes me feel a little betterChat Icon
