4/25/12-Planned c-section

I have some free time now that the baby is asleep (finally!)

I had my daughter on 4/25/12. She was a planned c-section due to my "narrow pelvis". They were concerned that she wouldn't fit and my doctor suggested the c section and I agreed to it. I'm glad I did because she ended up weighing in at 9 lbs, 5 oz!!!

I had P at South Nassau. On the morning of the c-section (it was scheduled for 12 noon and boy was I starving from the no food or drink after midnight rule), we went to admitting to get my paperwork and then we were up to maternity. They took me and before I knew it, I was in a hospital gown with an IV in.

The c-section started right on time at noon. The anesthiologist came and talked with me before the c-section about what to expect with the epidural.
Here comes the bad part, it took about 3 different times for him to get the epidural right. Turns out, I have scoliosis!! I've always had some back problems and go to a chiropractor...but, I didn't think it would be an issue with the epidural...Take it from me, if you have some back issues, make sure you mention this BEFORE they try to put the epidural in. So, before the surgery even started, I was already doing the ugly cry/sob.... The nurses were very nice and so was the anesthiologist. If he would have gotten it on the first try, it really wouldn't have hurt too bad.

Once it was in, I was in heaven. I was in love with everyone in the room.... They put the cathether in and my husband came in the room.

After some pressure, and tugging and general feelings of weirdness, I heard a cry and the doctor said, "It's a girl!" Then she said, "I hope you didn't buy a lot of newborn clothes!" LOL!

I couldn't believe it was a girl! We were team Chat Icon and EVERYONE told me I was having a boy....except for my mom, but even she was expecting a boy. So, don't believe all of those old wives tales about how you are carrying and that you "look too good" to be having a girl, etc.... because they were all wrong!

After they cleaned the baby up and my husband got to hold her, they wheeled me off to recovery where I was greeted by my husband and our little girl!!! They let my family come and visit me in recovery too...

After a while, I was wheeled to my room. The epidural was starting to wear off and the had to move me from the bed I was on to the hospital bed. That sucked!!!

Next, a nurse came in to tell me that the baby was going to the NICU because of rapid breathing.....cue the ugly cry again.... She took pity on me and brought the baby in before they took her to the NICU.

Then, some doctor came in and tried to explain why the baby was going to the NICU...but, I was so out of it, that I couldn't really follow or understand what the problem was....all I knew was the baby was in the NICU and I was scared!

I really loved my stay at South Nassau and all of the nurses were great...but, I was really disappointed with the NICU experience.

I felt that I always had to track down a doctor to explain to me what was going on with the baby, rather than the doctor coming to see me. The doctor who was caring for my baby was very hard to understand and kept referring to the baby as a "He" when of course our baby is a "she"...So, it made me wonder if the doctor even knew which baby he was talking about.

Because the baby was in the NICU, I wasn't able to breastfeed, so I had to pump and bring my milk to the baby. Everyday, I tried to get an update about the baby and to see if she was going to be able to go home with me and I could never get a straight answer. That was the most frustrating part... But, I went in for the c-section on a Wednesday and I came home with Penny on a Sunday. I was so glad to get that extra day in the hospital because I was in pain.

The c-section was the easy part, it was the recovery afterwards that was hard. The worst part was getting up to walk the next day....but, I'm glad I did because it helped with the gas that it caused by the c section and it helped me recover more quickly....As much as it hurts, the walking is the best way to get back on your feet!

I was really grateful for the private rooms at South Nassau. I was very emotional and in pain and I couldn't even imagine having to go through that with a roommate with visitors!!! Private rooms are the way to go!!!

I'm on the fence about staying at South Nassau again. I loved the nurses and the private room, but the NICU experience was terrible. My pediatrician is Dr. Rubin, who doesn't have rights at South Nassau....I think I would have felt better if I had my own pediatrician visiting the baby. Next time around, I will make it a point to deliver where my pediatrician has practicing rights.

P and I are home now, and getting into the swing of things...being a mother is the most wonderful and terrifying thing I have ever done!!!

Good luck to all you present and future mommies!!!
