The city - the set up a website for people to contribute to the city so they can pay for this. Personally, i think it is ridiculous that the city, which has no money, has to pay for this. I also think the coverage is totally over the top. Totally insane. He was a big public figure, but come on now. this is crazy.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
I had to pay for my father's funeral, I didn't get any hand outs! I understand that he is/was a pop icon, but why should tax payers pick up the tab? Does this set the stage now for every other "star" who dies?
I Guess I just never felt that strongly about any entertainer to feel that this is necessary.

MSNBC just said that the state/city made a request to the Jackson family for a "contribution" - doubt that will happen

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
I think this whole bordello is out of control. The guy died June 25th- Almost 2 whole weeks ago, and STILL he has not been laid to rest.
This is just a way for soliciters to make money selling over priced t-shirts & keychains with MJ's face on it.
I understand he was the King of Pop, but seriously hes getting just as much coverage as the the Pope did when he died.
He made great music.. okay, I get it. lets move on already & let him & his family mourn in peace.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
This whole thing is just disgusting. Why does the city or the state have to pay for this? It is a huge waste of taxpayers money and I don't live in California, but some of my federal taxes go to help that state so it just irritates the hell out of me.
The family should be paying for this.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
memorial for a ******** freak of nature? He was a brilliant entertainer but get the hell over it!!! I make fun of Elvis fans and now I have to deal with MJ fans who are just as delusional.
No and no some more and if the family would like to do it then do it on his fairy land complex.

I think it's just the cost for the police they need around the Staples Center and I guess when they are shuttling the coffin back and forth.
It's disgusting, and the family should do the right thing and reimburse the city. Shame on them if they don't.

I think this entire hoopla is insane. He has been dead for two weeks they still have not buried him. Does he really have to be at this memorial service? It is creepy.
As for the amount of $$$ it is costing the state of CA....CRAZY. I liked MJ's music but I like Bon Jovi too and I doubt the state of NJ would do this....

No offense to Bon Jovi... but they don't have even a fraction of the worldwide fame that Michael Jackson has.
MJ was bigger than Elvis, and Lennon. You will never see something like this again, at least not in our lifetime.
And in regards to the 4mil tab laid out by the city, I am sure the city will make that back and some from all the tax revenue they will take in from all the tourists.

Of course MJ was bigger than Elvis and Lennon, one lived during the days of MTV and the Internet and 2 did not.
As for impact on music, I doubt MJ will influence as many musicians in the end as Lennon did.
