I think this entire hoopla is insane. He has been dead for two weeks they still have not buried him. Does he really have to be at this memorial service? It is creepy.
As for the amount of $$$ it is costing the state of CA....CRAZY. I liked MJ's music but I like Bon Jovi too and I doubt the state of NJ would do this....
No offense to Bon Jovi... but they don't have even a fraction of the worldwide fame that Michael Jackson has.
MJ was bigger than Elvis, and Lennon. You will never see something like this again, at least not in our lifetime.
And in regards to the 4mil tab laid out by the city, I am sure the city will make that back and some from all the tax revenue they will take in from all the tourists.
I was using Bon Jovi as an example...fill in whoever you want...Madanna, Prince, Elton John. The point is that it has been two weeks already. Let the guy rest in peace.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
I'm not so sure MJ was bigger than Elvis. It's just we live in an age where the media channels are running 24 hours a day so they have to cover every little thing that happens and beat it to death, over and over and over... If the media was the same when Elvis died, i'm sure it would've been the same thing.
As for contribution to music.. i put MJ, Elvis and Lennon all pretty equally. However, i put MJ and Elvis in the same boat as they were both completely out of touch with reality (both lived in their little fairy tale world) and had rabid crazy fans who thought they could do no wrong, no matter how kooky they were. Whereas Lennon at least was a bit more grounded.
Regardless.. just let him be. I'm hoping after today the coverage dies down and we can stop all pretending he was a saint and go back to thinking of him as a man who started out as an incredible musician/performer and slowly turned into a sad product of his own delusions.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
I have one question. Was this HERO saving lives? Did he work to find a cure for cancer? Did he put his life at risk to save and protect others like fireman, cops, soliders? I am sorry to say this but the values in the country disgust me. Baseball players making millions of dollars a year to PLAY A GAME for a living. Pop stars treated as gods. Rather than putting the people who are doing somethign to better society (Dr.'s, cancer researchers, etc etc) on a pedestal, we worship singers and actors and sports figures...

The city - the set up a website for people to contribute to the city so they can pay for this. Personally, i think it is ridiculous that the city, which has no money, has to pay for this. I also think the coverage is totally over the top. Totally insane. He was a big public figure, but come on now. this is crazy.
totally agree!

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
it is what it is and people are eating it up so apparently there is a want for this kind of over the top stuff.
He has shaped much of pop music in his lifetime. He deserves a send off of some sort.
he was unique and that set him apart.
Was he a bit off, yep..I agree with that.
I'm sure LA will end up with enough tax revenues to more than make up the shortfall.
Where else would you have such a spectacle? Kansas?
LA baby..the land of freaky.

Agreed, but the only reason they're treated like this is because of the PEOPLE in our country. If people change their values for the better, it would be better balanced...but no, kids here look up to Britney Spears and the Jonas Bros, not scientists and astronauts.

Why shouldn't artists actors and athletes be looked up to by kids or anyone for that matter? They make the world a better place too. What if we had no MOMA, no concerts to go to, no theater, film, cartoons, no ballet, NO BASEBALL!! Life would be soooooo boring...
And I am not positive, but I think the Jonas Brothers are one of those good, wholesome groups that promote abstinence and a drug free existence.

I agree- By this country- I mean the people in this county. What I find even worse is the worship of people like Heidi and Spencer and Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. At least MJ, Brittney, Mariah have a talent and worked hard to get where they are/were. But these mindless reality stars who are nothing more than vapid wastes of space- that is what kills me even more. What are we teaching the children? Make a sex tape and you'll be followed around by the papparazzi and worshipped as a god to do nothing all day?

When Madonna passes, she will get this much attention.
May be true but she did not come close to having the talent that he had.

MJ isn't even relevant anymore.. yes he did do some good musical stuff years ago, but he is now a pervert and disgusting person. Yay let's have a spectacle celebrating him! One of the few times i'm glad I don't pay CA and L.A. taxes anymore!

ITA. The people of Cali should not have to foot a bill of that caliber. I am sorry but he did not need a $25,000 14K gold casket. MJ has to have $4 mil in his estate he is not that broke. It is just ridiculous.

Here's th best part. The city put up a website to get donations to help pay for all this and the server crashed. The Mayor said they didn't have the man power to get the site back up and running for hours due to cut backs. If they were't playing a game here in Cali they would have fixed that site ASAP to get the $$ people lined up to donate on-line.

Sorry, but he is totally relevant. Do you know how many current musicians sample his music? Additionally, it would be impossible to have a funeral of this magnitude for every "hero" that dies. Do they deserve one? Isn't everyone a "hero" in some way to someone? Who is to say? Perhaps these generalized heroes that posters are referencing were "perverts and disgusting people" behind closed doors.
You're really lucky to have gotten to know MJ so intimately to make such personal observations. I am jealous.

Re: $4 million for the MJ memorial.....
My opinion on MJ and his impact aside, I don't think that CA should have footed such a huge bill alone. I think they should have gotten a promise of payback from the Jackson family, to be taken out of his estate, prior to the event.
Yes, they stand to gain something from all the people who needed to stay in hotels, eat, get transportation to the event. However, I highly doubt it was anywhere near the total bill.
We all complain about how the media is going nuts over this - but do you read the news stories? Watch it on tv, websites? Purchase a magazine with articles in it? WE feed it. If it wasn't news, it wouldn't be there. Each individual can prefer to ignore it, but that won't change the other millions of people who look for it.
We've learned nothing from Princess Diana's death, we will learn nothing from this, only that as long as there is a market, they are going to bleed every last drop out of these stories. The media is paid to run things into the ground until they stop making money/ratings off it.
Lastly, I don't blame a dead man for their actions. They hounded him in life, they will hound him in death. That certainly was not his wish or doing.
