45 year old Christening gown
My father just found my brother's christening outfit in the back of a closet in his apt.
My great aunt (who was my brother's godmother) made the outfit and since my brother is going to be Ann's godfather, I was considering using it *but* it's really yellowed from age ... do you think there's a way to remove some of the discoloring? (whether a home remedy or maybe a cleaner who specializes in that type of thing)
I actually don't even love the look of the outfit but she did also make a beautiful satin coat to go over it that I would def use with the dress I purchased if I could get it back to white.
Maybe I'll post pics of it tonight when I get home from work.

Re: 45 year old Christening gown
my DS wore an antique family gown. (granted that was only about 30 years old).
You could try the cleaners OR you could have it dyed ivory. I know some people do this to blend the yellow in.

Oxyclean has done AMAZING things for some old linens I've found over the years, but let us know about the fabric, that will determine the "type" cleaner that would work best!!!

The dress & slip seem almost like handkerchief material and the coat is satin and lined but I can't recall what the lining is ...

I'm thinking I would not only be devastated but also ****** off though if the cleaners ruined it. I guess I'd just be devastated if *I* ruined it

Re: 45 year old Christening gown
One tip my mom always used with our "delicate" stuff was to lay them in the sunshine (dry) for a day, make sure to "flip" them -- the sun has a gentle bleaching effect without any harsh chemicals. Why not try that today, and see if the stains improve at all? With specific fiber information there are more specific/harsher cleaning agents you can try. (By "handkerchief" do you mean cotton or linen? Any beads/sequins/lace/embroidery? etc...)

I think it's just cotton (very thin but not sure if that's from the age or just how the material was/is). There is some trim that I think is made from the same fabric and there's also some embroidery.
I'm going to take a closer look at it tonight.

If it is not Satin use Oxyclean. If Satin lay in the Sun. The Sun works wonders for stains on any fabric!

Re: 45 year old Christening gown
So here is the coat (it's all satin):
And the gown (there's also a slip under it):
They really don't have stains persay, they have just turned color instead of white
I really don't think the sun will do much for the coat (plus I can't think of anywhere I can lay it out ... I've got tons of trees!!). And the gown seems so thin & fragile, I'm a little afraid to try anything on it

LOL!! Yeah, I was suprised at how good they look in pics! They look off white/ivory but in person they look more discolored
I'd even think about using it all as is but then I'll need to figure out something for socks/tights/shoes since what I have is bright white ...
