5 month old taking 30 min naps - HELP!

DD used to be a good nap taker. Now, not so much. She sleeps well at night - bed between 7-8PM (normally she falls asleep while feeding. We are guilty of going to put her paci in if she cries/stirs), up between 3-5 AM to eat then back to sleep until about 7 AM when she's up for the day. She takes about 3 naps per day and while they used to be 1-2 hours, they are now 30 minutes each (almost to the second, I don't know how she does it). We try to soothe her before naps (although I don't always do this), and she sleeps in a dark room with lullabys playing.

I know some babies can survive on that little sleep but we get C up from her nap and she immediately rubs her eyes and yawns and continues to do so until the next nap comes around. She's also much crabbier as of late. We've tried leaving her to go back to sleep but she works herself into a tizzy and no sleep happens. The only way she sleeps for longer than 30 mins is occasionally in her stroller, but I don't like her to nap that way unless it's absolutely necessary.

Just wondering if any BTDT Moms had any advice on how to improve her naps. We have not done CIO or any other sleep training yet, btw. I want to do this at some point but for the next month we are traveling/moving so I think it's pointless until we are settled.

TIA - I'm getting desperate here...

2 things-are you sure she's not in pain? ear infection? teething? You can try hylands teething tablets and see if that helps. OR maybe she's ready to go to 2 naps? Stretch the first nap a little later and see what happensChat Icon

I don't think she's in pain - she does this even if I give her some meds. That's definitely something to consider, though. If she was in pain I'd expect her to be crying, etc, through the day. Sometimes she's in a fantastic mood and then when it gets to be naptime she goes ballistic. Maybe you're right about the 2 naps thing. We'll see how that one goes! Thanks, Melissa.

Any other thoughts?

At 5 mo. DS was cat napping 20-30 min. too. Maybe 3-4 times a day.

Now at 8 mo. he transitioned to 2 longer naps. I think it's normal.

Did he seem exhausted when he woke up too? I wouldn't mind it but she's clearly still so tired but can't sleep. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
