5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

I thought this was normal until I read the post about babies sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. A few nights this week we got 4 hours (from about 9pm) and then it was every 2 hours after that.

Usually there is a midnight-ish wake up. Then a 2-3am wakeup and then a 5-6 wake up.

We are swaddling. BFing.. What am I doing wrong? Or is it normal to be still waking up this often. During the day he easily sleeps 3-4 hours. Chat Icon

At 5 weeks it's still pretty normal for a BF baby to still wake every 2-3 hours to eat.

Okay thanksChat Icon I am so freaking tired!!!! He was 3 weeks early and a tiny little guy. So I guess he has some catching up to do. I just saw those posts about sleeping through the night at 6 weeks and I wanted to cry in frustration!

Re: 5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

You are doing NOTHING wrong. I had the same exact issue with Eliza. I was going out of mind convinced something was "wrong" because my DD was still waking every 2-3 hours when she was just about 5 months. In the meantime, my firstborn was gining me at LEAST 5 hours between feedings at night at that age.

My first DD has food allergies so my allergist was adament about us waiting to 6 months for solids.

For whatever reason, at around 5 months or so, she just started going 6-7 hours at night- with little to no sleep training. She's most definitely a better sleeper than my first was- but it was hell getting here.

She'll start doing it soonChat Icon

Sounds normal to me. My DD woke up every 3 hrs. exactly until she was 3 months old. Every baby is different and I think it's more the exception than the rule that a baby so young should be sleeping through the night. In fact, they really shouldn't be sleeping for very long stretches at such a young age because they need to eat more frequently as they are growing so much. My ped. said to never let a baby only a few weeks old go longer than 4 hrs. without a bottle. I wouldn't worry about it, as your DC grows he will figure out a new schedule. It just takes time.Chat Icon

Every baby is different. My dd woke up every 2 hours until 8 months old and the only way she slept through the night was after I did CIO.
but IMO 5 weeks is still very young.

Since he sleeps longer during the day I would say he's got his days and nights confused which is typical. My ped told me that newborns have at least one long stretch of sleep per day. What I did with DD is nurse her frequently during the day even if it meant waking her to feed then I would get my long stretch of sleep at night (even if that was only 4hrs I would take it!)Chat Icon

Re: 5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

I have twins that did this for the first three months. Then from month 3-4 we got like 5-6 hours of sleep. After 4 months they started sleeping 7-7.

Every baby is different. I have heard from family and friends their babies sleeping 4-5 hours a night the first few weeks.

hang in there...take it day by day. That is the only way I got through it!

Also, if you husband works, on the weekends maybe you can both agree that one take the feedings from 9PM-4AM and the other from 4AM-9AM. Just getting 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep does an amazing job for you.

Hang in there, its totally normal! DS was an early STTNer, but it was not the norm. Even if DC goes to bed at 6:30, make sure you go to bed too. Eventually, you will be rested again, I promise!

Re: 5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

It sounds normal at that age esp for BF--they digest BF easier and faster therefore needing more

My ped told me to feed and wake every 3 hrs during the hrs 7am - 10 pm so that the longer stretches will occur at night

Those are truly the exception. Babies need to eat every 2/3 hours until they are at least 12 weeks. DD was EBF and she didn't stop waking to eat during the night until 7 months.

Re: 5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

It took 6 months for my son to sleep thruogh the night. At 5 weeks he was up every hour to 2 hours, it was so hard and we tried everything as well. He was a very hungry boy. Things got a lot better for us around the 4 month mark, I know that seems so far away but every baby is different, I used to get so upset hearing other babies slept through the night from the beginning but every baby is different. There is an end in sight, now he sleeps the whole night through, hang in there!

Re: 5 weeks and still waking up every 2 hours at night!!

This might make you feel better. I'm EBFing. DS is 6 months old and still wakes up 2-3 times per night to nurse. He only nurses for 10 minutes per session at night now, but for the first 2 or 3 months, he'd nurse for 45-60 minutes including the middle of the night. He started nursing for shorter periods during the middle of the night, but began waking more frequently. Every time I thought we were moving toward a sleep shcedule, he'd do something that threw me for a loop. He has a more consisten waking pattern now, but it took a while to get there. He still nurses for about 30 minutes during the day.

It's very normal for babies, especially EBF babies, to not STTN at 5 or 6 weeks old. Chat Icon
