according to the story, the white guys believed that the black guys were looking to rob them
i'm not sure they were targets, it seems like there was a history between the 2 groups

so they say....I am sorry but I believe that is a cover. They said the victim was not in the plan to rob the car. So why even bring it up? Sounds like somebody made it all fit. JMO

one report said that the guy who confessed to beating the black guy up with the baseball bat, drove by them in an escalade the first time, then came back with 2 of his friends about 10 minutes later. sounds to me like they did target them.

Wow! That's a horrible story.
This is going off a tangent but I had never experienced racism until last year that DH & I were at a Yankee game. It was pretty sad & it made me realize how vulnerable many people are.

instead lets just put the victim's picture in the paper in his military attire and refer to him as a thief?

all i am saying is that IF it was a measure to prevent riots in howard beach, then that's cool
my parents, my aunt/uncle and we live there, we do not want/need trouble
we were not involved, so we don't want to be the victims of any retaliation

while you may be right about trying to stop riots, I do think it's very possible they were there for no good (to steal a car) - why else would they be out there at 3am?? nonetheless, if the scenario about the "bat boy" coming back with his friends is true, then I think they should throw the book at them!!! they're intentions were worse IMO...to cause physical harm to someone else, all b/c of the color of their skin.
the same report i read, stated that one of the guys stood over the victim and said "this is what happens when you try to rob a white boy!!"  
eta: AND, if the white guy said he saw the victim "looking" at his gold chain days earlier, WHY go back looking for trouble!!?? it all boils down to this: ALL involved had no business being in the streets at 3 am!!!!

Its sad people have to try and steal other peoples property Chains,Cars and whatever else. And its sad people have beat the crap out of other people at 3 am.
But I do think this case is different then 1986.
