Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

Please correct me if I am wrong, but are people simply protesting the opening of a mosque at the WTC site because of the religion, or is there another reason? As far as I am aware it was Islamic extremists, not "normal" people who practice Islam, who boarded the 4 planes and attacked the WTC and Pentagon and tried to hit the White House.

I apologize if I sound ignorant but I am trying to understand.

I heard this woman on 1010 wins this morning.

she said it would be "building a shrine to the ideology" of those that attacked us.

it is ignorance. pure and simple.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

I understand that not all Muslims are extremists and of course not all of them agree with what some of them did with the WTC

that being said, why are they fighting so hard to be by the wtc site- I'm sorry I just think its insensitive.

I'm with you. It seems because the terrorist were Muslim then having a Mosque is some horrible thing. I don't get it. Are people naive enough to believe that all Muslims are terrorist. From what I have read, they actually want to make it a mulit cultural center with a mosque that would be open to everyone regardless of religion.

They aren't going to be at the site. The mosque/community center will be three blocks away.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

Some people feel we are letting the people responsible for the attack and death of 3,000 Americans worship on the same grounds they destroyed....kind of like a slap in the face. The extremists behind the attacks believe it was what their god wanted and they were carrying out their god's work and basically we are going to let people worship this same god again on soil where thousands were massacred.

On the other hand, just because you are Muslim doesnt mean you are a terrorist. Plus, there is this thing called Freedom of Religion in our Constitution. We can't pick and choose what can be applied.

ETA: While it is their right to build a mosque there, I think it is insensitive to the families of the victims that lost children, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and so on.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

but, it's not on the same soil. 3 blocks in lower manhattan puts you practically on the other side of the island.

where is the cut off then? where would it be acceptible? north of chambers? south of wall street?

are muslims living/working in lower manhattan **** out of luck b/c extremists attacked us there? should they not have a place to pray?

there are tons of churches and other religions houses of worship in the area. hate and fear mongering (not here, I am referring to the organizer and her "stop the islamification of america" blog) is being used to discriminate. it's sad.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

many of my friends are sending me "i am against building a masque at WTC" requests on FB and i am ignoring it.

I truly do not see why people can not build a religious building near the site. It is not on the site (footprints) and even so American Muslims working in those buildings did die as well. People who practice Islam are not all terrorist.

Edited part: To me its like saying no Japanese people can not visit Pearl Harbor, or even better no Catholics can visit the holy lands.

I agree...I didnt realize it was 3 blocks from the site, not directly on top of the WTC.

I'm not sure why being it's several blocks away people are all up in arms about it...

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

I have to disagree with the ignorance comment- I know for myself, it is a sensitivity thing- I thought about how I would feel if I had lost someone and I had to pass this 13 story mosque when I went down there to pay my respects- and sorry it just didnt sound like the right place for me.

I would also be shocked if I was the only one that felt that way- there was quite a stir about it in the news

I know you're not the only one who thinks that way... and I am not saying that either line of thinking is "right" or "wrong," but I did want to make sure that I was understanding the reasoning behind the protests. I appreciate you giving your input.

how or why do you think it would be different to pass one there or any place else?

what if the assailants were Christinas? should we tear down Trinity Church? The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul?

every day there is a muslim call to prayer (I guess it's twice a day?) on Atlantic Avenue close to my apt. close to a few fire houses that lost men in the 9-11 attacks. should they have requested that the call be outlawed? b/c a religiou icon served to remind them of something?

I don't think it's insensitive.. i mean this is America and one of the things we celebrate is freedom of religion.

we can't pick and choose where houses of worship are built.

3 blocks from WTC is hardly right on top of, and hardly insensitive..

I completely agree. The men who committed that horrific act were no more Muslims then the Westboro Baptist Church are Christians.

I agree.

We live in a country where we have the freedom to worship whatever type of religion we choose. Those who are against it also have the freedom to protest it but to generalize Muslims because of an extremist group is ignorant to me.

seriously? you are talking about ripping down buildings that were there before the WTC was and comparing that to a mosque that is just NOW being put there- of course its not the same thing. And sorry, its sacred ground to me and a lot of Americans- its very different than passing a Mosque somewhere else.

I agree that it's ignorance.

Hitler was raised Catholic and peppered his speeches about the Creator but in no way is he a Catholic as the religion is taught.

Same goes for the 9/11 hijackers. They do not represent the Muslim religion.

I absolutely support having a mosque at the site.

yes, the footprint of the WTC site IS sacred ground.

but the rest of lower manhattan is not.

and yes, I am comparing the two b/c you are speaking of "reminders" and those are two religious reminders MUCH closer to the footprint of ground zero. that is the point. people can be reminded of anything, any place.

that does NOT mean that others should be discriminated against b/c of it.

I am not saying that people cannot or should not be affected on a PERSONAL level, but those personal feelings should not effect the rest of the public.

by all accounts the Cordoba house seems to be a great addition to the lower Manhattan landscape. it doesn't even seem like it will be a mosque, but a large structure with a mosque insid

I'm just giving my opinion which was what the op asked for- I thought that was the point of this thread to ask people who were against it why

I dont see how you will get that side of it when you call people that disagree ignorant.

ftr, my ignorant comment was directed at the organizer/blogger...not anyone on here who agrees or anyone else.

but there is no getting around that it is very intolerant. and that to me is sad.

Three blocks is not the same as the ACTUAL site.

And yes, the SITE is scared ground, but three blocks away is not.

btw, I'm an FDNY wife, and my DH lost family and I had a very personal experience with 9-11 and I still believe that

What I don't understand is the assumption that no Muslims worked in the WTC or died on 9/11 as a result ... I would think it would be offensive to those victims' families to protest this mosque being built there.

I PERSONALLY think the whole protesting of it is RIDICULOUS! There were OTHER Muslims on the flights also. Not just the POS that flew the plane into a building. I think saying it is to close, and a constant reminder is also silly. Why shouldn't they (Muslims) have a Mosque there? Why would it be so horrible?

Personally, I think people have WAY to much time on their hands and LOOK for crap to B!tch about.
