Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site
I don't think there's anything wrong with having a mosque or any other religious building in that area. I understand why it may upset people but I am not one of them.
I don't watch Fox News and kept hearing the Mosque was going to be built at ground zero - so it's not just Fox. It's just sensational journalism at it's best.

When I heard about the protests the other day on 1010, I wondered where all of their outrage was when there were vendors scattered all over lower Manhattan, well within a two block radius of Ground Zero, selling photos, keychains and other "memorabilia" for profit shortly after 9/11.
THANK YOU!!!!
I truly find THIS more offensive than anything else. It has become such a tourist trap 99% of the year
We were there last year, and there was a vendor there selling this crap. There were a few people there talking to him. I went right up, told thim what I thought of his "business" and told these people - please do not buy this stuff - they left. This is the most disgusting thing to me. I am actually surprised they do not get more slack for this. That being said, I really would not want to see a mosque there. I have nothing against the Muslim community, but if it bothers the victims families, then I do not see why they can not just pick another spot. I understand freedom of religion and all that, but in this country there should also be some sensitivity. At this point, there are many empty buildings in the city so to pick another spot should not be a big deal. I don't feel that because people may not want the mosque there makes them ignorant (as has been said).

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site
So it is now a few months later since this thread was last discussed..... how is everyone feeling now?
I'm having a debate with people on FB who are against it and I just don't get some points they are making:
~ something about an inauguration date for the mosque on 9/11
~ a greek-orthodox church also has been trying to get a permit to rebuild but they keep geting red-tape.
I searched news sites and cant confirm these points

I am not against it- never was- but I do have an issue with having the "grand opening" ceremony on 9/11/11. I feel that 9/11 should be a day of rememberance.

I completely agree. The men who committed that horrific act were no more Muslims then the Westboro Baptist Church are Christians.
That.
I believ that we have the freedon in this country to practice religon as we see fit.
They have every rite to build a mosque where they see fit, anywhere.
We cant pick and choose our freedom, that a VERY dangerous territory.
Like I may not agree with burining an american flag, I believe that I have the right to burn one every minuite of every day because our constitution says I have the right to freedom of expression, and freedom of speach.
So they should be able to a build a mosque wherever they want. They havea right to pray how they want, where they want.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site
From what was recently said on the news is that the Imam of this mosque has said things inline of being anti american, that america brought 9/11 on itself, ..along those lines..i forget exactly.
I do not think a mosque should be that close to the site of the memorial. Im not against having one, because not every muslim follower is an extremist..its a very small group of them that act this way; i think it should just be further away out of respect to the victims families. It may be 9 years later, but the wounds are still raw.

I PERSONALLY think the whole protesting of it is RIDICULOUS! There were OTHER Muslims on the flights also. Not just the POS that flew the plane into a building. I think saying it is to close, and a constant reminder is also silly. Why shouldn't they (Muslims) have a Mosque there? Why would it be so horrible?
Personally, I think people have WAY to much time on their hands and LOOK for crap to B!tch about.
and there were muslims that worked in the WTC that died...
I totally agree that this has less to do with sensativity and more to do with people needing something to complain about

I absolutely agree. The Imam said that America was partially responsible for 9/11 and he will not condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization. That is the main reason I am against this- because I am not convinced that this man is not radical.
Of course they have a RIGHT to build their mosque wherever they want. But they SHOULDN'T build it so close to ground zero- right where part of the plane landed. Americans were killed in the name of Allah and G-d forbid I lost my child at Ground Zero you can bet I would NOT want to hear others praying while I grieved over his ashes there- especially when this Imam seems a bit shady to me.
I think that it is insensitive to insist that they will build there after Governor Patterson offered them land elsewhere. Most American agree that it is insensitive and they will not back down- that in itself makes me second guess their motives that this is really a cultural center to bring people together.
Americans were killed in a horrific way- jumped to their deaths to avoid the pain of burning alive. If the mothers and husbands of these victims do not want this mosque there then in the name of peace and unity BACK OFF and build it a little further away.
Why do we need to be the politically correct ones here?

A constitutional right is just that, there is nothing to debate on that subject.
But, the topic in itself and what I've been hearing/reading on a daily basis gives me lots of anxiety and grief. There is SO much fear and hate and xenophobia that it literally makes me sick to my stomach. I have compassion for everyone involved, truly I do, but I wish it would just go away and we can live in peace togehter instead of using "they" all the time!

glad this got brought up again. I feel exactly the same way i did a few months ago and am still sickened by the fear and hatred i hear regarding this whole thing (anyone see the Daily Show lately.. gotta love Jon Stewart)
I just read today that there are currently 2 other mosques in the area that were there well before 9/11, and they've become so overcrowded that it was deemed necessary to build another mosque to handle all the people who want to worship there. These people just want to worship and be left alone.. and this country is supposed to be a place where they are allowed to do that, anywhere they want. This has nothing to do with any disrespect towards the families of those who lost anyone on 9/11 - one has nothing to do with the other The argument that 'yes they're allowed to build there, but they should know that no one wants them to, so they should go away' is just plain silly i'm sorry. Think of how offensive it would sound if the discussion was about some Latino families wanting to move into a predominantly white area - yes, they're 'allowed' to buy wherever they want, but 'we' don't want them there, so they should just back down and not move in. See? sounds just as ridiculous.
i understand there's a lot of emotion surrounding the issue.. but i also feel there's a lot of fear mongering perpetuated by the media that clouds the issue.

The media is not helping one bit, they are making it WORSE. Plus, I think there are a lot of facts floating around that are inaccurate, really spreading like rumors do, and they are fueled by emotion. It's quite scary IMO.

I'm with you. It is so unfortunate that people - American people cant exercise the basic right of worship. Isn't that exactly how most of us got to America in the first place - religious freedom? We really need to see past the religion, past the race, past sexual preference and see that they are american just like you and I.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site
It shouldn't even be up for debate. What happened to the founding principles of this country? IT has been stated over and over - it is not illegal to build any house of worship anywhere in the USA. People may think it is insensitive and you have every right to that opinion but "you" do not have the right to take away any basic freedoms outlined in our constitution unless you truly don't give a flying POOP about this country and what it stands for.
I don't care what political party or ideology you belong to but what is a constitutional right needs to be upheld. Do we go back to WWII mentality and start rounding up people from Iran, Pakistan or any other Muslim country and put them in work camps? Oh that is just stepping over the "line"? That is next after you start telling someone you can build something near a certain place BASED on religion.

I think I read somewhere that Pres. Obama said it is within their rights to build a mosque, but he has not, nor will he, comment on if it's wise or not.

I am so against this mosque being built anywhere near the WTC site that I just get SICK thinking about it. I find it not only extremely insensitive but politically foolish. Of all the things to put up near Ground Zero, it has to be a MUSLIM SHRINE?? WHAT THE F%^&%? Why not a Jewish temple? or a Methodist church? Why a MOSQUE? Seriously - i would support it but not anywhere near thw WTC site. Figures this was ok'ed by Obama, a Muslim himself. This country is going to shitter with that man ruining this country. I am so disgusted!
