I know we have many educators here. Just curious on your opinion of a district moving 5th grade to middle school. Pros and cons please. TIA!

5th grade in middle school

I believe sachem is considering this

I teach 6/7 grade, and honestly there's a big difference between an incoming 6th grader and 8th grader. I'm assuming that would be even more obvious with a 5th grader

i think that's fine- where I am, the high schools are grades 7-12! I feel that that's terrible. But 5th-8th grade in one building makes a little more sense to me

I don't think it will matter. The kids adjust and the school adjusts on how they do thing.

I went to an elementary school that was k-8. It wasn't a big deal.

Re: 5th grade in middle school

I am iffy about this as I was worried when my high schooler started 9th that she would be with these big, bad 12th graders. lololol.
That was NO problem and now SHE is the big bad 12th grader (to tell you the truth, you can't even tell the difference of a 9th grader and 12th grader anymore).

Re: 5th grade in middle school

I am against putting 5th graders into middle school. I'm in Sachem sd and our BOE is currently considering this an option. We are in a very deep financial crisis in our district and need to close schools. I would much rather see 6th grade move back to elementary. I don't feel 9/10 years old are ready for middle school. I think there is a huge difference between 9/10 and 13/14 year olds.

My district growing up was always K-4 for elementary and 5-8 for middle school (still is). It was fine. We all made it through and your kids will too.

Re: 5th grade in middle school

Isn't that a bit young for middle school?

What's next- 3rd grade will be middle school??

What's the reasoning for it?

5th grade in middle school

I don't agree with this at all... These days kids are more and more socially aware at a young age, and I don't think it's appropriate to have kids that young with eighth graders.

I'm also strongly against districts that move eighth-grade into high school...especially with all the redshirting going on, it's just not appropriate to have my 12-year-old daughter into school with 19-year-old men!!!!

My district is 5th in middle school. We are not there yet, but I Am a bit concerned. My child is young and has kids in his class a year older than him (I did not redshirt). I can't imagine him starting 5th grade and being with 8th graders Chat Icon

If you know people (or if there's anyone here) in Mt. Sinai, Island Park, Lawrence or Malverne, these districts have grades 5-8 in their middle schools. They may be able to shed some more light on pros and cons for you.

I do have to say going through the middle school twice that the kids ARE separated most if not all of the day, even lunch.
I would say put the kids back in the elementary schools too if there is an option.

They need to close schools as there is not enough in the budget. They started the year with $16,000 in the bank.

Our district currently has 5th in middle school and 8th in HS. There was some push back but, it seems to be working well.

In my district, the incoming 6th graders in middle school are kept in a separate wing of the school and work with a "team" of teachers and all classrooms are within a few feet of each other. No getting lost, no intermingling with 8th graders. I would be okay with 5th grade being in middle school if there was a plan put in place similar to this.

5th grade in middle school

Our district goes K-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Love the set up. I would be very uncomfortable having my 5th grader with 8th graders. They are very developmentally/socially different and I'm just not a fan of putting them together. The pp stated that her school has the younger kids in a separate wing, which if the 5th graders HAVE to go to middle school would be a great compromise.

5th grade in middle school

Our SD is K-4 and 5-8

My son is now in 6th and second year over at the middle school building. 5th grade they only switched classes twice to get them used to it. 6th grade they now change for all periods and have a locker.
5th and 6th are grouped together for everything and 7th and 8th as far as extra curriculars and stuff.

My son and all of his classmates have adjusted perfectly fine. We are a very small SD though.

Re: 5th grade in middle school

I think it depends how the school is run and separated.

My son is currently in a grade K-6 school, and I think there's more of a difference between a 5 year old and a 12 year old, then say a 10 year old and a 13/14 year old, in terms of interest, maturity, ability to relate to each other. But the kindergarten and first grade have their own wing downstairs in his school and older grades are upstairs. Assemblies and events like field day are always broken up between K through 3 and 4 through 6, so they can appropriately gear it to the relevant age group. Recess and lunch, etc. are also separated by grade.

So I can see a 5th through 8th grade middle school working out OK, if there wasn't a lot of intermingling.

Some LI high school districts are 7 through 12, and that could be concerning, too (as you have tweens with potentially legal adults who drive!). At least 5th through 8th they are all pretty much in the "tween years."

Our district is K-4 and 5-8. Both schools ride the same bus so the kids are used to being with the older kids who ride the back of the bus and younger kids in the front. My DD started 5th in the MS this year. She has adjusted great as have all of her friends from what I have heard. They switch for all classes, have lockers, etc. When I ask her if she sees certain older kids she says not really as 5-6 and 7-8 are seperated for lunch, recess, etc. Their lockers are in different wings also.

God I would have HATED that as a kid!! I was in a middle school that was 6-8th grade and I distinctly remember being in 6th grade and looking at an 8th grader the same as a 30 year old Chat Icon And that was just on the bus and in hallways.

I think it is a bad idea. I also think we should go back to a junior high model like in my district...k-6..7-9 then 10-12

I am also in Sachem, I am hoping they don't move 5th grade to Middle school. I think they should move the 6th graders back to elementary and close one of the middle or junior High schools. I moved back into the sachem community because I loved going to Sachem when I was younger. Now with the way everything is going I am not too happy about Sachem. Chat Icon

Yeah that makes better sense. They don't need 3 high schools do they?
If they have low enrollment in the elementary schools then move the 6th graders back to elementary and close one of the middle schools or high schools- i agree with you

I just don't understand either how they got themselves into this mess. Who is mishandling the money so badly that it got to this point?

My middle school was 5-8. It was fine. Usually, the grades were completely separated (in different wings of the school). If we were combined, it was 5/6 and 7/8.
