I am also in Sachem, I am hoping they don't move 5th grade to Middle school. I think they should move the 6th graders back to elementary and close one of the middle or junior High schools. I moved back into the sachem community because I loved going to Sachem when I was younger. Now with the way everything is going I am not too happy about Sachem.
Yeah that makes better sense. They don't need 3 high schools do they? If they have low enrollment in the elementary schools then move the 6th graders back to elementary and close one of the middle schools or high schools- i agree with you
I just don't understand either how they got themselves into this mess. Who is mishandling the money so badly that it got to this point?
There are only 2 high schools.
I think either way can work. When I was in middle school we had 6-9 so not that different than 5-8. I worked in a district that had 7-12 in one school. Regardless of what they do, it seems drastic and will be rough. I don't know what the class sizes are but I know some are high already. I just don't know how they can close as many as 4 schools, reorganize entire schools, and not have it be total chaos.

For some reason I thought there was 3 high schools. I remember the new one being built, I guess that was the 2nd, not the 3rd. But FOUR middle schools? that's a lot too.

There used to be 2 highschools (south and north) One was 9-10 the other 11-12. Then they built East and North and East became 9-12, and South became a middle school (samoset)

Re: 5th grade in middle school
Not for it... I still don't like the idea of 6th grade being considered "middle school" we grew up with K-6 then Jr and Sr High schools.

Re: 5th grade in middle school
I personally don't believe 5th graders should be in middle school. As a former 6th grade teacher, I don't even believe that 6th graders are developmentally equipped for middle school.
The developmental difference between 5th graders is significant. The difference between 6th and 7th is less significant...but still a jump.

Our district goes K-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Love the set up. I would be very uncomfortable having my 5th grader with 8th graders. They are very developmentally/socially different and I'm just not a fan of putting them together. The pp stated that her school has the younger kids in a separate wing, which if the 5th graders HAVE to go to middle school would be a great compromise.
How does this work as far as high school credits needed to graduate? Do they start earning in middle school?

High School is still 9th-12th grades no matter what building they are housed in. So they start taking high school courses in 9th grade. Some accelerated students will start in 8th grade

5th grade in middle school
I grew up in a district that was K-6 and then 7-12. There was no separation of grades in the hallways or during lunch periods. Gym periods were 7 & 8 graders or 9-12 graders. Lunch periods had everyone mixes in.
There were no problems that I ever encountered.
I wouldnt have a problem with a K-4, 5-8, 9-12 district at all.
