Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
What safety seminar gave you this information? I think a lot of us are curious.

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
They are the BEST thing, I fell getting my DD out of my car while she was in her infance seat, she tumbled not a scratch on her thankfully.
Plus the babies fall asleep in there you dont have to wke them up once you get to someplace and the snap n goes that go into the carriers is awesome no lugging a heavy stroller around for months.
I hate those classes its 1 persons opinion
I say get it but you have to do what you feel is best
just remember waking a sleeping young baby can casue you to have a rough outing or rough night due to it...

Christine makes a very good point here, my hospital wanted to make sure we HAD a carrier. And a friend of mine, who gave birth in NYC and doesn't drive, had to send someone out to BUY one so she could leave the hospital!
If someone used the convertible as a newborn, did the hospital check that? I thought that was common.
And I also agree with Ali, my DH is trained in car seat safety as well and he would definately say something if it was unsafe for our child.

I agree with each and everyone of these posts. I cannot imagine NOT using an infant carrier for a newborn
Ditto. I just don't think i'd be comfortable with the convirtible seat for such a young baby.

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
I don't agree that the carrier if unsafe. I think the convertible careat would be more unsafe for a newborn. They say they can be used for 5 pounds and over but I would never do it. The straps are in a place that I wouldn't feel that the baby was secure. They are so small when they get out of the hospital. The infant carriers like the Graco Snugride/Safeseat are so much more made for the size of their tiny bodies. I switched to the convertible at 4 months because my son was on the taller side and was uncomfortable by then in the infant seat. I would go to the store with a tiny baby and see how lost they would look in a convertible carseat. I thiink as long as you got the base installed properly and checked and learned how to attach the seat properly than the baby woud be very safe. I also think the the poor baby would wake up every time you had to take the baby out of it.

Very good point. We weren't allowed to leave the hospital with the baby without the infant carrier. It's a rule of the hospital.

Well thank you everyone for your thoughts... my husband and i are thinking about maybe trying and see what happens. Its just so scary being a first time parent and hearing crazy stories...or go to these classes and they tell you differnt things. I am sure that my DH and i will make the best descion for our family...thanks
It IS very scary being a first time parent - I have a 14 month old and it is STILL scary - There are many crazy stories out there and a lot of information to absorb in very little time. and good luck!

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
I have heard this as well. The issue as I understand it is the "snap" connection between the base and the car seat is considered less safe than directly attaching the infant carrier via seat belt minus the base. I thought I read this somewhere in Consumer Reports (I could be wrong though) way back when with DD#1 and it concerned me as well. I wound up going the Graco snap route, but did have my reservations as well.
Perhaps you could try attaching the infant carrier with a seat belt and see how that goes? It defeats the whole easy in easy out convenience of it all, but it may give you the peace of mind you want...

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
I used the carrier and I loved it. My daughter likes to fall asleep in the car, so when she was a newborn, it was simple to get around with her, just by taking her out of the car in the carrier, and popping it into the stroller without waking her up. My sister, on the other hand, didn't want to be bothered with an infant carrier, so she went straight for the convertible seat. Worked really well for her and she never regretted the decision.
Either way is safe, as long as you use the seats correctly. It's a personal decision.

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
If the baby safety course you went to was Babee Tenda one it is a scam. Please don't trust what they say. My DH and I went to that too and then looked it up later. You should get the book baby bargains. They go over the safety of almost every baby item you could think of and they have a blurb in there on the Babee Tenda company and how unreliable they are.
Everyone I know with an infant uses the infant carrier and I've never heard of any safety issues with them.
Good luck getting ready for you little one!

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
DD is almost 9 mos and the infant carrier has been great. She is actually reaching the height limits and I hate the idea of not having her in it. Definitely read around, they are safe and beyond convenient. GL!

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
The NICU made me bring in her infant seat to see if she was ok in it before releasing her.
I couldn't imagine having to carry the baby in and out of the car in my arms. When she was sleeping I would leave her in it until she woke up...never wake a sleeping baby
If they were that unsafe, would they still be sold??

I remembered being scared to death after attending one of these with my son years ago! I didn't buy any of that junk they were selling and did my own research. I ended up buying everything they said was "unsafe" and it was fine.

Re: 6 months pregnant with a question for all you moms that did not use an infant carrier
We had all our carseats (infant carrier, convertible carseat now) inspected by the guy at the Nassau board of traffic Safety.
We have asked him many times how to install our seats properly, etc...
NOT 1 time did he say that infant carriers were unsafe.
What he told us was that having it inspected for proper installation was key.
About 80% of all carseats are installed improperly.
So inspection is REALLY important.
This is very confusing and overwhelming when you have a kid. Lots of comflicting information.
I suggest you talk to a lot of other people. Store staff, safety board, etc..
There is no conspiracy theory. And only that seminar is right and the rest of the World is wrong.
