6 year old starting to lie
My 6 year old has started to lie recently on minor stuff like saying he brushed his teeth when he didn't...I can't stand to be lied to and wondering if this is just a phase, will it get worse. Right now if I catch him in a lie I would just take away something he likes temporarily and then talk to him about how it's not nice to lie etc etc. Do kids around this age start to lie, what do you do when you catch them in a lie?

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
Wow, I just had this convo with my almost 6 year old! He's doing the same. I've been telling him if he lies, I'm never going to be able to believe him and won't trust him. Hate that he's doing this!

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
My ds started around 6 I think. Same type of things. He will say he washed his hands, brushed his teeth, pretend he ate food that he gives to the dog or puts on his sisters plate, etc... I hope it's a phase. We have had a lot of talks about it. We try to explain to him why it's wrong. I think he will grow out of it.

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
My 5 year old has been lying a lot too. We've talked to him about it many times but it has continued. He's very good at it too and will never fess up the truth!

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
I have been telling DS for YEARS that he cannot lie to me and DH because all parents have special powers that can sense lies. I have actually been brainwashing him to think he cant pull a fast one. LOL When DS tries to lie, I give him "that look" and he immediately tells the truth.
I will take what I can get for as long as possible.
All kids lie to their parents here and there after a certain age.

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
A friend told a story once... she told her DS, he was 5 or 6 at the time, that they were going to have ice cream after dinner. When dinner was finished, she told him that she lied and they didn't have any ice cream.
Pretty effective if you ask me
I have had this issue with my 5 yr old. He goes in immediate time out (which, for him, is the most effective punishment) and we discuss the lying afterwards. It definitely seems to be an age-appropriate issue.

Re: 6 year old starting to lie
Omg DS has such a guilty conscience, that he can't lie. Even if he tries he looks so guilty I see right through him. I think he is his own worst enemy...
