OH JEEZ!!

IMO it's not like a wedding where the ppl are trying to make back $$ to cover pp and then some. If you're close with the family (or a family member) $200 is more than enough. I'd think $100 is more than enough if it's just a friend's kid. KWIM.

I don't know if that helped at all.

DH and I are going to a sweet tonight and we are giving $100 for the 2 of us. If DS were coming (13 months) we'd give $150.

I think this is way over the top for a 16th birthday party.

I think $100 is more than generous regardless of the venue.

we had a really huge sweet 16 for SD last year & we had no expections with the gifts. Honestly I think $150 is FINE.
We had a few VERY close relatives that gave more but I was even suprised/flattered by that. I didn't have a big party to make people feel obligated to give big gifts.

I agree, I think this just covers the cost of the plate and place. I like to at least cover my butt.

Depending on how close you are to the family I would even give more. I use the same equation. But I've doubled it for very close relatives.

When you say catering hall...which one..that makes a difference too..Like a Knights of columbus or a wedding hall?? I would probably give 250 for family of 4.

Not sure if this helps but I got married there on a Sunday in February 3 years ago. I paid $58 per adult and $29 per child for my WEDDING there and could have chosen a Friday, Saturday or Sunday for that price. The place is beautiful but extremely reasonable for February dates. I would think $150 is enough to cover your plates. That's what I would feel very comfortable and very generous in giving for a Sweet 16 there in February.

I'm probably in the minority but -

I don't care where it is, what night it is, how much so & so gave to you at a similar function, how many kids of yours are going, etc

...I believing in giving what you can afford. Chat Icon

Oh yes then I agree...I would say 150 but yes, only give what you can afford. You could always give 100 and a small gift etc...

I completely agree. Its the parents choice where to have their party, and it shouldn't dictate how much I give as a gift. so if they had a backyard BBQ it would be ok to give $50, but since it is at a fancy hall I should be expected to give $200. Thats utter nonsense.

Whats the point of being invited to a party if you feel like you need to cover the cost of your plate? You had no input into where the party was held. I don't know...I just think these over the top sweet 16s are just unneccesary, so that really affects my stance on this topic.

I agree with you, I always base my gifts on my relationship with the guest(s) of honor. We had my daughters sweet 16 in a fancy Knights of columbus but I know we spent more on other things beside the venue. Like I said earlier, with the execption of close family members- I would have never expected a young family of four to give $300 to a child for her birthday regardless of where we held her party.

Re: sweet 16...how much money?

I never give more than I can afford. I don't think you are "supposed" to give any amount in particular. It is not a wedding, it is a birthday party. (and even if it was a wedding, I would still say, you should only give what you can afford).

Re: sweet 16...how much money?

I would never think to give more than $100 for a sweet 16. I guess I am not up to speed on the sweet 16 circuit. Had no idea people gave $200-300.
