Not sure if it's been posted already...did you hear about Bloomberg's latest initiative?
He wants hospitals to lock up and hide formula and count it like it's medication. Whenever a woman requests a bottle, they are going to be lectured about breastfeeding.

What a crock! I BF both of my DS but that was my choice. I would have been beyond livid if I opted not to and someone was trying to force/guilt me in to it. I think that's totally unfair.

I'm sure this will not be the popular response, but personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. As the article stated, no mother will be denied the formula if they ask for it. It is simply not going to be broadcast in front of them. While BF vs. FF is definitely a choice, there is plenty of evidence proving that breastmilk is best for a baby. So I see nothing wrong with educating new mothers about it. We are educated about all kinds of things that are best for our babies- sleeping on their backs, how do dress them, how often they should eat, etc. Nowhere does it say new moms will be lectured or forced or guilted into breastfeeding. Simply educated. I do think many women give up on breastfeeding (not saying all) because as we know, BF can be really difficult, and formula is SO easily accessible. We get tons of free samples, the brands and logos are everywhere. I do believe that more women would breastfeed if formula wasn't so accessible.

I'm not a Bloomberg fan, and I generally think the Post should be used solely as a lining for bird cages. I don't think that any new mom should be lectured or made to feel bad in any way.
That said, I don't think this new initiative is all bad. If families still want to FF, they won't be denied the ability to do so or access to formula. There just won't be cans laying around for them to take home samples.

Is his reasoning to discourage those who require $$$ assistance such as WIC, from requiring more $$ assistance to feed their child formula?
Or is this up there with his plan to limit the size of a soda a person can buy?
Before he tries to force breastfeeding, he should try growing breasts and see if his opinion changes.

I can't stand this man. Perhaps he should use his position to advocate for longer/PAID maternity leaves for moms...that would have allowed me to breastfeed a lot longer than a lecture from the nurse in the hospital.

I personally plan on breast feeding my baby. I exclusively pumped with my twins until they were about 4 or 5 months old. This time around, i hope this baby latches and i can breastfeed. However, this is something I want to do. It's a personal choice. I think this guy has lost his mind with locking up the formula and trying to push breastfeeding. No mother should be made to feel guilty or bad that they don't want to breast feed.

I couldn't BF my DD for very long for a number of reasons and in the hospital, my ped actually recommended that I supplement with formula b/c her bilirubin levels were high. I trusted him and did what I felt was best for my baby. I would have been pissed if I got lectured every time I needed a bottle. I felt bad enough that BFing wasn't working out without the hospital staff making me feel more guilty. Bottom line is it's my business and my choice. The government should stay out of it.

He needs to get a grip on reality. This is not a communist country and he cannot tell people how to live their lives. If a mother chooses to FF in the hospital, she should not be frowned upon for doing so.. Just like, if a person wants to super size his soda, who is he to say that it's not right??? It's complete BS!!!!

I dont believe in your case anyone would have lectured you. I would think staff of hospitals would be smart enough to not lecture someone who has medical reasons to NOT bf.

bloomie is one f-n idiot......between his way of treating teachers and fireman and now to this.....this man is truly a piece of garbage....im sorry but although bf is not for me and i didnt bf my girls i understand that it is a choice ......and i know some people feel that this isnt so bad but we need to remember that everything in life has its positives and negatives but thats why there are choices out there for us to make so we can make the right decision for OUR FAMILY ....
i think that for every woman thats lectured on the negatives of giving formula than a woman that is bf should be lectured on the negatives of bf as well because the fact of the matter is there are negatives to bf as well.......if im going to be lectured and in other words getting a slap on my wrist for a choice I MADE FOR MY FAMILY while im lying there in pain vulnerable from just giving birth than you're sure as shit i want the same thing done to the woman next to me that has chosen the latter

I think it's time bloomie got a lecture". We can start with teachers and NYPD educating him on a thing or two.
I'm respectfully in much disagreement and saddened by any woman who does not see this as a big deal or "not so bad"
What happened to women having choices and freedom to make choices ON hER OWN TERMS??? Or just putting trust in a woman to educate herself?? Not needing a man to oversee that we make the right choice.
I don't need this initiative put in place by a tiny man or a model saying breast is best.
What is the world - and women who agree with this- coming too???

For the record, I am all for BF'ing if that is YOUR choice, it's not anyone's right (especially the governments) to tell you that you HAVE to.

Amen! I could not have said it better myself. BTW - I had to pump and supplement with formula my DS bc he was in NICU and bili was high and then he refused breastmilk and i breastfed my DD for a bit and it did not agree with her.
This arguement should not be about if breast is best or if formula is good. This whole debate should be about Bloomberg and his idea/belief that he can make decisions and get his "tenticles" into every aspect of our lives and society which he has no business being a part of. He has screwed over many of my family members both in education and the fire dept. I've had enough of him and his ill-informed or uninformed decisions!

Wow i think i would freak...as someone who couldnt breastfeed my first and most likely will not be able to breastfeed my scecond...i will be beyond livid if someone comes and tells me what i should be doing

And I agree with you 100%. I was just stating that it is my personal choice to BF as it should be everyone's personal choice to BF or FF, medical issues aside. If your baby doesnt take to BF, then FF is obviously the way to go. Bottom line is, it's your choice, not theirs. My SIL was made to feel horrible about pumpin and not BF at the hospital and she should not have been made to feel that way at all.

It says that BFing babies will not be supplemented with formula unnecessarily. Samples will not be given out. And that's really it. It's still a free country. You can still choose whatever method of feeding works for you and your baby.

If part of his role is to manage the health care costs of the city he oversees, then I think this initiative makes sense. BFing is well established to be the cheaper and more beneficial option. Both BF'd babies and nursing mothers require less medical expenditures in the short term and in the long term (think about the reduction in cancers that is proven for women who BF, etc. etc). However, this man is blurring the lines between morality and legality. He's overstepping his boundaries by forcing his constituents to make the better financial choice.
I do however agree that formula should NOT ever be offered at hospitals unless a mother/baby can not nurse for a medical reason. I also think that ALL companies are prohibited from advertising at hospitals....lansinoh, enfamil and Disney alike. But these things are a whole other "debate".

I do not believe any mom needs a lecture upon requesting formula. To lock it up and sign it out..it's not a narcotic. It's nourishment.
I wonder if you can bring in your own formula to the hospital, though - if you already plan to BF. Would you get a lecture then?

Well then who gets to decide whether it's necessary or not? I chose to BF, but I also chose to get 5 hours if sleep at a clip. I would nurse my last session, send the baby to the nursery so I could sleep, let then give him 1 bottle of formula and then had him brought back for the next feeding. I'm sure Bloomberg would find that unnecessary supplementing. But let me tell you, getting a couple of hours of sleep was necessary for my sanity. I wouldn't have needed some lactation nurse coming in and telling me that 2 hours of sleep is plenty and that they refuse to feed my child because I should be doing it myself. That's just ludacris.
