Newspaper Publishes Gun Owners’ Names and Addresses

Just wondering what people thought of this article that included an interactive map of the gun permits issued.

I remember feeling unsettled when they had property info made public online & then someone pointed out that it's public info anyway.
---------------------
http://www.lohud.com/interactive/article/20121223/NEWS01/121221011/Map-Where-gun-permits-your-neighborhood-?nclick_check=1

A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.

Hundreds of residents in New York’s Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.

The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the paper’s decision to make the information public.

“This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this. This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should i hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!!” said commenter Curtis Maenza.
“How about a map of the editorial staff and publishers of Gannett and Journal News with names and addresses of their families…,” wrote commenter George Thompson.

All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records. The paper also requested the information from Putnam County, which is still compiling the records for publication, according to The Journal News’ website.

In a statement to ABC News, The Journal News said its readers “are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods,” because of the conversation about gun control on its website after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., last week.

“We obtained the names and addresses of Westchester and Rockland residents who are licensed to own handguns through routine Freedom of Information law requests. We also requested information on the number and types of guns owned by permit holders, but officials in the county clerks offices in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties maintained that those specifics were not public record,” the statement read.

“New York’s top public-records expert, Robert Freeman, disagrees,” it added.
The paper declined to answer further questions about the map.

AND this is why I fear gun restricitons and this ultimate hate for those who are gun owners and supports.

This is a crime in my opinion! I know its public record but now you put those families in danger of some maniac breaking in JUST to get the weapon. stupid, stupid, stupid.

There's no way it's a crime. it's public information. if someone really wanted to do something to gun owners, they could get the info anyway.

I don't see the point of it though

this is why you fear gun restrictions? If guns were restricted, wouldn't there be less guns to steal?

I know it's public record, but I guess seeing it on "paper" like that feels like an invasion of privacy. But I think I feel that way because my cousin comes up. But then it is public record and nothing on the internet in private so I guess it's all fair game.

This is kind of how I feel.

I want to believe that the majority of gun owners are responsible. I don't know what printing their names and addresses is meant to really accomplish? "Don't try to rob 12 Smith Lane! They have a firearm!" OR is it more "The assh*les at 12 Smith Lane have a gun! Let's harass them for exercising their right to bear arms!"

It bothers me on some level and I guess it's because up to that point anyone who took a real interest and wanted to look up who had a LEGAL FIREARM could do so... but the paper decided to make it open knowledge even for folks who previously didn't care enough to look it up.

You know what would be really interesting? Publishing the names and addresses of the folks who have ILLEGAL, UNREGISTERED firearms.

By 'crime' I meant like "this is a sin" type verbage. i already said its not techincally a crime. public record and all.

And if guns were restricted I'm sure the criminals would totally be unarmed.

I had a long talk about this with some others who are pushing gun control. We all agree no one needs to have a machine gun but what we don't want is the government in our business. We just don't trust them to do the right thing. When does it stop. Is this mccarthy era again? The right to bear arms is our right.

Retricting guns or redefining what an assualt weapon is, gets dangerous and THAT is what we fear the most.

We all want solutions but most gun supporters don't want a rushed decision based on emotions. We WANT mental health to be the focus because its not just guns that can be a weapon of mass destruction. We dont WANT to be proven right. We all want this type of killing to stop but we feel that gun control is just a scape goat.

Actually some gun shows here are asking that felons be provided a different type of license so they are easily identifable and not allowed into gun shows, etc. Its not a solution, but a suggestion (one I'm not sure about either).

We need to stop pointing fingers at eachother and start working together on what we AGREE on.

Ditto. I understand it's public record but there is NO point to this other than, I guess, trying to "shame" gun owners? That's not what's going to happen.

With all due respect.

"We need to bring awareness..."

To what? Legal gun owners? People who have followed the law to legally own a gun? Allowing criminals to now know where EVERYONE lives? Putting those peoples lives and homes in danger? "embarassing" legal gun owners?

I could not disagree with you more.

Publishing their names does nothing but put their lives and homes in danger.

We are loosing site that guns are and will be legal to own in this country. The law of the land says we are allowed. That will not change.

I beleiev there should be a thoughtful and serious look into HOW to manage gun controll. Evereyone is saying "we need gu controll now", but no one (legislaters) has really come up with "how".

And I plan to buy a gun very soon, actually. I want to buy one before it gets difficult. I want to go to the range and shoot. Nothing more. But I want to be able to buy a gun.

I will also:
1. Take a gun safety class.
2. Put a trigger lock on the gun.
3. Lock the gun in a case.

No judgement here at all, but can I ask why you want to purchase a gun? Completely out of curiosity.

Hmmm. See my first thought was that robbers who lead lives of crime (not just a one- time hit on a house) may avoid the homes with a gun.

I'm not sure if this really bothers me but maybe that's because I haven't thought it through?

A lot of info is public record ... Sale prices of homes, court records, what party you are registered with, who is a sex offender, ect.

It kind of makes sense to me that if you want to obtain something legally and you need to register/apply for a permit to have it --- it generally is and/or can be public knowledge.

Eta: and I say this as someone who believes you can own a gun should you be mentally fit to do so

Awareness to who of our neighbors feel the need to own weapons. Personally, I dont think its necessary. If I want to shooting, I'd just go to a range and rent a gun. I would NOT want a gun in my house and if I had kids, he--lll NO. I wouldn't want my kids playing with other kids whose parents have guns in the house, I dont care how much lock and key they are under - Nancy Lanza probably had her gun well protected and we all saw how THAT turned out!

Personally, I just dont feel there is any need for private citizens (not affiliated with law enforcement) to own guns PERIOD. My personal opinion is that those people who feel the need to own guns "for protection" are doing so out of fear, and fear breeds irrationality. I am sure others disagree but thats
how I feel.

ETA: As to the argument that the list now advertises gun availiabiltiy to potential thieves, I have to say thats a bit counterintuitive - after all, the point of a private citizen in owning a gun "for protection" is precisely to ward off potential burglars and invaders..So, how does the list invite those burglars to steal the guns if those same guns are there [theoretically[ to prevent their entrance ? I dont quite find that argument to be well thought-out.

I went skeet shooting years ago and loved it. I thought it would be funt o buy a gun and be able to go all the time, rather than rent the gun from the gun range. And not every gun range "rents" guns.

Curious.. will you think of them differently now that you know they are gun owners?

I get what youre saying. I do. I dont have a gun nor would I feel thrilled if AJ was playing in a house with someone who left their gun easily accessible.

But of course I disagree with your opinion about 'fear' and no one needs to own a gun (outside law). And I know its been played out to death but the story of the dad who shot the 3 armed men who broke into his house while his child had a sleep over and NONE of the children were injuried is a pretty moving argument.

We ALL want to be safe and feel safe but the reality is criminals FEED off of our 'comfort' levels. You feel so safe you leave your front door open? I'll just walk in and steal. Its easiest to make a victim out of those unarmed.

ETA:

so...

How do you feel about the criminals out there with guns knowing YOU dont have one?

Nice house, nice stuff, nice looking lady.. ooh lookey a teenage daughter and no hubby and no gun.. WIN WIN.

Sick people exist.

This list is just wrong. Most truly criminally minded horrors are premeditated and planned out. This just made it EASIER. Both for those crimes of oppurtunity to GET a gun and for those to get at those WITHOUT protection.

It is simply public record. Would it be pointless to publish marriage licenses in the paper? Yes! Would it be a "sin" or illegal? Nope. It's black and white.

I too do not understand this controversy. It's public record. No one has done anything illegal. Yes, some may question that is was unethical for the paper to do so, but again, not illegal. I don't presume to know WHY they did it, but I would think it is to raise awareness to the amount of guns in the area.

Re: Newspaper Publishes Gun Owners’ Names and Addresses

Yes it's public knowledge but I feel they printed this info to shame these people for owning something they have every right to and they did so legally.
It may be public knowledge but how many people really sit at their computers and say hey I'm gonna look up who of my neighbors owns guns
I personally would never own a gun and I do believe in restricting the sale of certain types of guns. But these people have every right to as the laws are right now
It's not something that should be published,
It may be public record but do you want newspapers publishing your name address and how much you paid for your house
