8 weeks too early for CIO?

had PED appt and DS is waking 3X/night to eat. She (Ped) wants us to start letting him CIO to get him off the night feedings and stretch the time in between. He doubled his birth weight already.

what do you think? seems early for me but what do I know, Have a 20 month old still waking for bottles Chat Icon

IMO yes, way to early!
I didn't do CIO until my kids were 4 or 5 months, maybe later.

Oh my goodness.... IMO that is WAY too early.

We didn't start CIO with DS until he was at least 6 months.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

Way way way too early IMO. I think any earlier than 4 months is too soon. We did CIO with DS at 5.5 months and it only took one night. Any earlier than that, he just would not have been able to soothe himself.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

I feel bad wanting to do it now at 6 months! 8 weeks is too early. I understand how you feel. My Ped suggested that we do CIO at 2 months as well if he wanted food in the middle of the night.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

I think that's way too early, he's probably just hungry. Maybe try stretching out his feedings during the day. Start by adding maybe 10-15 minutes to the time between bottles. At night I guess you could try to give him a paci when he cries to hold him off a little. Personally, i think at 8 weeks he should eat as much as he wants. Then again DS is 22+ pounds and is 9 monthsChat Icon

No, I didn't listen & they also told me that I was overfeeding him. I fed him at night until he was about 3 months (IF he woke up) after that if he woke up crying, I picked him up & rocked him to sleep & he'd sleep til morning. NOt many Dr's suggest cio this young. Do you go to a Dr in Lake Success by any chance?

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

I know a lot of Dr's suggest CIO early on, but I think 8 weeks is too early. Babies are hungry, they wake at night. I would not listen to your Pediatrician in this instance.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

Way to early IMO! They don't even have a normal sleep cycle until they hit around 12 weeks or a little older. I did CIO around 4 months, when I saw that DS was making it at least 5 hours a night.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

Here is the thing, there is no evidence, that you do or do not do permanent dammage to your baby when you cio at 8 weeks.

There is evidence that the earlier you start sleep training the more successful it will be.

At 8 weeks, I couldn't do it, but what I did was pick one night feeding and gradually give less for that feeding. Offer more during the day.

We only had 1 night feeding at 11w, when I started this, it took about 2 weeks to gently wean ds off

My almost 5 month old wakes twice in the night to be fed, at 8 weeks your baby needs the food and should not (imo) be left to cry! Feed that baby!

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

IMO, it's too early. I know some will disagree, but I also think it's too early to wean off the 3 am feeding.

What my ped told me to do at our 4 month visit was to offer DS a bottle of water at the 3 am feeding. If he took it, then he was probably hungry and I should up the amount I gave him during the day. If he didn't take it, he was waking out of habit. Night 1, he took a sip or two and refused. Night 2, he refused, went back to sleep. He never woke up for a bottle after that, unless it was a time where I needed to increase his overall intake during the day.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

Allowing a baby at 8 weeks to CIO is child neglect IMO. At that age, the baby needs to feel safe and secure which he/she gets that from having their needs tended to. Attempt to offer more formula/BM during the day, and soon he/she will drop the night feedings. TBH, if my ped gave me that advice, I would be finding a new one since that philosophy does not jive with my beliefs.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?

WAY tooo early in my opinion. At the 7 week -8 week mark when Aiden would fuss a little bit I would give him a binky and he would go back to sleep. That would buy me another hour hour and half. By twelve weeks Aiden was STTN (8-10 hours). At 8 weeks, by giving him the binky instead of a bottle for his 3 am -4 am feeding I started getting 5 -6 hour stretches. It slowly increased from there.
