Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?
i also thinks its too early my dds just went thursday for their 2 month appt, when the dr asked about feeding habits i told him one still wakes for a bottle at night and he said thats fine, to him it was totally normal for a 9 week old to still wake for a bottle, oh and my sleeping throught the night is like 12 - 7 so if you could from like 7 or 8pm then they both definately sill wake for a feeding

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?
It's so common for 8 week old babies to wake several times per night to eat. Are you BFing or FFing? I can't believe your doctor even suggested CIO for an 8 week old. That's way too early. If DC is crying to eat, it's b/c of hunger at that age, not habit.
You could try feeding DC more frequently during the day in the hopes of getting longer stretches at night. It may work, but it may not.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?
Are you BFing? My ped said to breastfeed on demand (even at night) for at least 12 weeks. DD (7 weeks) gets up 2x a night to eat.
I definitely think 8 weeks is way to early to CIO. DC won't understand what is going on. At this stage they are still crying for a reason.

Allowing a baby at 8 weeks to CIO is child neglect IMO. At that age, the baby needs to feel safe and secure which he/she gets that from having their needs tended to. Attempt to offer more formula/BM during the day, and soon he/she will drop the night feedings. TBH, if my ped gave me that advice, I would be finding a new one since that philosophy does not jive with my beliefs.
What she said! I tried giving my now almost 7 month old more formula, when he was around your DC's age before I put him down for the evening and eventually he slept longer. It just takes time, you're almost there...

I think it's way too early. I think Dr. Weissbluth reccomends between 5 and 6 months.

Re: 8 weeks too early for CIO?
At this stage they are still crying for a reason.
Children always cry for a reason, whether it be hunger, diaper, temperature or reassurance, etc.. I do not practice CIO methods with my DS because I feel that even his requests for comfort or closeness deserve to be met, no matter how old. As far as your 8 week old, I agree with the PP, it is extremely early, he's only been out of the womb for 56 days and is so new to the world yet. I'm sorry to be harsh here, but IMO, I think it was irresponsible of your doctor to suggest that neglecting a newborn's nighttime needs is something you should consider. Just because it's dark out, doesn't mean that children, especially newborns, stop needing to be parented. All babies will learn to sleep when they are developmentally ready, or when we as parents decide they are strong enough and trusting enough to be trained. Ignoring a 56 day old is just wrong and I would absolutely find another physician if I were given that advice. Again, sorry to be so emphatic, but I believe it takes a village..and this is my input, for what it's worth.

In his book he says you can start between 6-8 weeks especially if you are going back to work.
