Nassau County Wage Freeze........
I am just about at my wits end with NIFA and this wage freeze.... My STBH is stuck in steps and not only did we just by our home about a year ago, BUT are also planning our wedding. Wthout this being lifted not only are we struggling to maek ends meet but we may have to delay the wedding.....
I just don't understand how NIFA or the County can just break a contract like that ....
Is anyone else in somewhat of the same boat ?

Nassau County Wage Freeze........
You won't get much sympathy from this board, because there are many people out of work who cannot afford day to day living expenses. If you can't afford a big wedding, downsize it or go to city hall. Most people are going without raises or getting next to nothing for years now.

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
Same boat, minus wedding. I think our DH's probably have the same job, mine is also stuck in steps and should be at top pay now. It's very frustrating and has been a very difficult couple of years for us. We have many blessings and that's what we try to focus on but it doesn't change what's taken place, not to mention what it's done to morale. Forget my feelings on the legality of it.

First I am sorry. It is really frustrating when you expect something and it does not come to fruition. You have two options, downsize your wedding expectations, or go the JOP and then have a party later on.
If he really feels that he is underpaid for his position and experience level he could look for another job.
I am sorry that he is not getting a raise.

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
We were.. god my husband didn't see any of his raises that were in his contract for years! YEARS. He quit. Thank god.
ETA: I also barely got a raise at my job (not for the county) but I didn't have a contract that specifically said I was getting one like he did and also they start you at such a low salary that without the raises it is impossible to live on LI with that salary.

Sorry but lots of people out of work and haven't had raises in years. I never depend on future raises. Anything can happen.

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
It's hard. I have friends who graduated the academy then the freeze took place... so they are stuck at an extremely modest salary - especially for Long Island. And it's also been stuck for geez like going on five years now? It's not even like it's just been a year or two.
As far as people who are out of work and the economy - My husband has been laid off three times in four years. We had to sell our home at one point - we were fortunate enough to bounce back a bit and buy another. However, you still have every right to feel the way you do. Everyone's situation is unique to their own.
The point I'm trying to make: I have a friend who lost her daughter in a car crash. Then, I have an Aunt who lost BOTH of her children, tragically. Does that mean my friend shouldn't be upset about her daughter because someone like my Aunt could say - well, I lost TWO kids vs. your ONE kid?? That's crazy. There's no award for who has it worse. There's ALWAYS going to be someone in a worse position.
We all have to just try and understand and support each other through it.
Prayers to you Erin! ...and EVERYONE who is feeling the hardships of the current economy - no matter how big or small.

Of course anything can happen. But not everyone has a contract that spells out how their salary will change over the course of X number of years. It's not really the same as depending on future raises in an industry where these things are are not negotiated in advance, spelled out in writing, and signed by both parties, like they are in the case of the union contracts at issue.

Yes, it is affecting my family , too. It's been a few very tough years. Thankfully though, my Dh didn't just start the job. Many prayers for you and your family.Your STBH sounds like he just started and my heart goes out to those workers especially. I cannot even imagine!
What some people don't realize is that many people affected by this freeze are working in jobs where they risk their lives daily keeping Nassau safe and dealing with a the lowest of the low of socierty. They accepted the jobs starting at a BELOW modest salary, because they expected to be making a liveable and better salary in a few years. People aren't complaining for no reason. These salaries were promised to them in their union contract that Mangano ILLEGALLY broke! The kick in the teeth is that while Mangano is ILLEGALLY breaking these union contracts to freeze people(going into 4 years now) , he somehow finds $800,000 to give his non union buddies raises. THEN,when NIFA objects , he uses the loophole of giving these people promotions so that these buddies will still get these $800,000 in raises. That part, while so many are struggling is disgusting!

Didn't know she was talking about a union contract when I answered. Yes that does suck and yes I would be upset. But you have to do what you have to do. Live on less and hope it all gets resolved

Nassau County Wage Freeze........
Wow.... surprised about how unfeeling some of the people responding are! This is not a situation where you are depending on some future raise that may or may not happen... it is a raise where you take the job understanding that your pay will raise X amount per year, and then all of a sudden, that doesn't happen. These raises were supposedly guaranteed, agreed to by both parties, and then they didn't for reasons outside of anyone's control. Those of you who are affected, I really do empathize, and I hope it is over soon.

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
The public is becoming very vocal about their property tax dollars and other expenses. There is no money left, which is why contracts are being ignored / broken. Nassau county is crying poverty. The long timers don't care Bc they made their money and have retirement "in the bag". They are not going to fight for the younger people. seems to be happening everywhere now.
The younger workers are not getting the same benefits as originally promised

I think some may be missing the point that people TAKE these jobs based on knowing that the starting salary will progress to top pay after 5 (or so) years. It's not like getting a performance based raise. It's an agreed upon salary that takes x amount of time to reach.
My DH works for the city, not Nassau, and he has no contract and no raise in sight. But luckily he was still able to reach the top pay he expected.
Eta: to the OP, sorry you are going through this. Hope it somehow gets resolved soon.

Nassau County Wage Freeze........
We are with you. DH missed a couple big steps and while we are making ends meet, financially, it is frustrating and hard. Some of DH's friends are only a year or two in and can barely make ends meet. Some people are a little harsh on here - missing a step isn't the same thing as not getting a merit raise or a cost of living increase - I work in private industry and have missed out on those too - the way the step structure works in Nassau County is that many new employees are grossly underpaid for their positions when they first start out. You have people risking their lives for less than $40k per year. They take these jobs knowing that if they can bite the bullet and make ends meet by digging into savings for a couple years then they will be ok. Now they are frozen at $35k for 4 years and took on a mortgage knowing that they were LEGALLY PROMISED A SALARY in a contract in X years and they'd be fine.
It is not fair and withholding steps is NOT the same thing as someone in private not getting a raise.
The county portion of your taxes hasn't gone up in something like 10 years. So what you "paid" for county services like police and corrections is the same it was 10 years ago. This is why Nassau can not pay their contracts that were negotiated in good faith. (School tax increases are what make your bill go up).
My heart goes out to the OP. having to put your life on hold because Nassau broke contracts isn't fair. The financial irresponsibility of the Nassau administration should not be solely falling on the backs of county workers and their families. It needs to end.

Of course, those poverty line is for use across the country, and do not take into account the very high cost of living here in Nassau.

While I agree that is the US poverty line $34K is not a bad starting salary. I started at much less at my first job and even with the COL change based on what year it was....I still would not have started at $34 if I had that job today.
So having people say $34K is poverty is a it much IMO.

No, it isn't poverty. But if you are told that over the next four years, your salary will be $34k, $41k, $47k and $52k respectively (I don't have the chart in front of me, those aren't the actual numbers), you are going to make different financial decisions than if someone said you make $34k and you may or may not get a raise in future years. (Ie, getting married, buying a home and starting a family)
People left higher paying jobs because of the earning potential in accepting a law enforcement position. They did this knowing they would be ok for a couple of years at the lower salary.
The bottom line is that the freezing of NC wages is causing unfair hardship on employees. They were promised one thing and given something very different.
I'm praying for the day that Nassau County loses the union lawsuits and has to reinstate everyone to their contracted levels with backpay.
