It's hard. I have friends who graduated the academy then the freeze took place... so they are stuck at an extremely modest salary - especially for Long Island. And it's also been stuck for geez like going on five years now? It's not even like it's just been a year or two.

As far as people who are out of work and the economy - My husband has been laid off three times in four years. We had to sell our home at one point - we were fortunate enough to bounce back a bit and buy another. However, you still have every right to feel the way you do. Everyone's situation is unique to their own.

The point I'm trying to make: I have a friend who lost her daughter in a car crash. Then, I have an Aunt who lost BOTH of her children, tragically. Does that mean my friend shouldn't be upset about her daughter because someone like my Aunt could say - well, I lost TWO kids vs. your ONE kid?? That's crazy. There's no award for who has it worse. There's ALWAYS going to be someone in a worse position.

We all have to just try and understand and support each other through it.Chat Icon

Prayers to you Erin! ...and EVERYONE who is feeling the hardships of the current economy - no matter how big or small.

Very well said!

OP-Good luck. I hope things work out for you!

They accepted the jobs starting at an almost poverty level salary,

Starting salary is actually 3x the poverty guidelines.

Well lets be honest the poverty guidelines are LAUGHABLE

Yes, it is affecting my family , too. It's been a few very tough years. Thankfully though, my Dh didn't just start the job.
Many prayers for you and your family.Your STBH sounds like he just started and my heart goes out to those workers especially. I cannot even imagine!

What some people don't realize is that many people affected by this freeze are working in jobs where they risk their lives daily keeping Nassau safe and dealing with the lowest of society. They accepted the jobs starting at a poverty level salary, because they expected to be making a liveable and better salary in a few years. People aren't complaining for no reason. These salaries were promised to them in their union contract that Mangano ILLEGALLY broke!
The kick in the teeth is that while Mangano is ILLEGALLY breaking these union contracts to freeze people(going into 4 years now) , he somehow finds $800,000 to give his non union buddies raises. THEN,when NIFA objects , he uses the loophole of giving these people promotions so that these buddies will still get these $800,000 in raises. That part while,so many are struggling is disgusting!

Out of curiosity, what is the poverty level starting salary.

Starting salary is $34K and poverty for 1 person is $11K.

Trying to quote but having issues..
anyway I have changed my original comment because I am not going to argue semantics on this and whether it is "technically" poverty level. Chat Icon
Not when this takes away from the point of this post.
My husband's job the starting salary is not even $34,000 it's $30,000. A lot of people living on this salary for the last 4 years are also trying to support a family on that $30,000. Most can't. Lots have left. They are also dealing daily with the possibilty of getting assaulted and being bitten, having feces and urine thrown on them, etc. They took a job like this because of the step increases that were promised in the union contract. So while there are no promised raises for union county workers for almost 4 years now, and Nassau county is broke, where is the $800,000 in raises coming from for the non-union workers that Mangano is finding loopholes for? Btw , one of these employees is the Secretary to the county comptroller who is now making $130,000 a year and is going to be getting a $23,400 raise a year.

That stinks that everyone is struggling. I honestly feel for everyone. But I assume you didn't take the job 8 years ago at a salary significantly below market because they told you in 8 years your salary will definetely double - and gave it in your writing in your employment contract, KWIM?

Of course, those poverty line is for use across the country, and do not take into account the very high cost of living here in Nassau.

While I agree that is the US poverty line $34K is not a bad starting salary. I started at much less at my first job and even with the COL change based on what year it was....I still would not have started at $34 if I had that job today.

So having people say $34K is poverty is a it much IMO.

34k is not poverty....I don't make much more than that and I'm a single woman who takes care of myself. I know to LIF standards you need at least 300k a year to live, but 34k is certainly not poverty.

Edited to say :
I'm just commenting on the poverty level comments, NOT on the legalities of not getting what you are promised in a contract.

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........

Chat Icon Chat Icon ugh to a few of the comments ... I understand completely about people struggling to make ends meet , etc , considering I'm sure a few of you know my story and just a few short years ago I was a single mother who left an abusive marriage and needed all the help I could get to keep a roof over my children's heads!

I am NOT complaining about having to hold off on getting married , what I am complaining about is the fact that my FH , who originally worked for the NYPD in Bushwick and was on the fast track to become a Sergaent or more ( to make more money), left to join the NCPD over 7 years ago being promised CONTRACTUALLY a certain pay ( alot more than the NYPD) . Pay that we planned our future on, including buying our home , etc... NIFA and Mangano have ILLEGALLY broken that contract and now we have to suffer. Some of my FH's collegues are loosing their homes , cars etc because of this !!!!! And these are men and women who go out day after day and night after night to protect Nassau County residents. YES property taxes are high in Nassau, and on Long Island period, HOWEVER, not only does the NCPD have the fastest response time out there along with their own AMT's etc.. BUT you pay for what you get !

Bottom line is , if this contract can just be arbitrarily broken at whim , what's next !? What if your mortage company sent you a letter saying oh by the way , we don't care what contract you signed with us we're raising your interest rate to 20% because we are having financial difficulties and need the money !

In the mean time I lost my job when they just turned one and have been out of work since.

I am sorry that OP and others who are in the situation are going through this. I know it must be really difficult and create a big emotional drain. I truly hope things improve soon.

I guess the only thing I do not understand in general is how people structure their financial lives based on a future promise - even if that promise is in a contract. We all know that union contracts are very fluid in nature and subject to many external factors. I think in the future it is wise to only rely on money that you are currently getting when making financial decisions because even if something is guaranteed too many things can happen to throw off the best laid plans.

Yes this, DH has stuck forever it seems with no end in sight. Things that they were promised in there contracts are taken away along with steps. People just coming on to the job are barely making it and some are even on public assistance. They are putting there lives on the line everyday in law enforcement and no I am not talking about the police and can't feed there families. Thankfully my DH has put in quite a few years and we are okay but it still doesn't make it right and I feel awful for those just starting out in the profession! Chat Icon

It sucks! It really does. The economy is terrible for everyone. People who work in private industry now make less than government workers because there are no guaranteed steps/raises. I am sure your dh works hard and deserves a raise.

NY has been draining tax payers to give to welfare programs. Now, there is just nothing left. Many people who receive free housing, etc. then go and use the income they do earn (off the books) to buy themselves luxury items like designer clothes and iPhones. Nothing is changing because no one wants to be politically incorrect.

I'd like to know what you mean, also. Freezing steps in union contracts like this isn't something that happens (without lawsuits, anyway). If people couldn't rely on the raises, you wouldn't have any police officers to protect you and your family, or corrections officers to staff the jails. No one would be willing to take these jobs for such a low pay. Nassau County would have to raise the starting salary in order to get people in.

Yes, if anything, union jobs are more stable in these economic times... At least for law enforcement, and firefighters, and teachers (to a degree). (Maybe the local unions like plumbers or electricians are more fluid? I'm not familiar with them).

This situation is more like taking a job that promised you $75,000 salary... And then you show up on your first day, after signing your contract and rearranging your life and the boss tells you, we redid our numbers and now we can only pay you $40,000...a salary step is different from a raise!

Yes - i think that's an important thing to point out. We (general we) keep referring to them as raises but they're steps. Different thing. Mind you they also haven't gotten raises (typically cost of living increases per contract - those are frozen too), but it's the frozen steps that really hurt.

It does suck. An even in non-contract positions, there is often an understanding that there will be at least cost of living increases every year and when all of a sudden, that stops, it is difficult to adjust.
