Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
Pathetic and miserable.
To the OP, sorry to hear you're going through this frustrating situation. Nothing but well wishes for you and all other families being affected by all of this.

Nassau County Wage Freeze........
How did this thread become all about cops? Everyone is forgetting that ALL Nassau County employees are in a pay freeze. Including Nassau counties ONLY level one trauma center. So many nurses and ancillary staff are being laid off and no one is getting overtime along with not getting our steps or COL. The best is when all of the nassau politicans are patients or send their family and friends to NUMC and are considered VIP and are put in the ICU when not needed and yet expect the best care when they are the reason why we don't have enough staff to care for the really critical patients and why we can't pay our bills. My point is that this whole NIFA pay freeze is not only about cops. There are just as important other professions in Nassau also not getting our raises. My husband is a detective and my BIL is a ncpd paramedic. My BIL gets called almost everyday he is off for overtime even though they are in a pay freeze!!!! Everyone is comparing NCPD cops to NYPD. Yes NCPD may be on a pay freeze but unless you just came out of the academy the past few years in NCPD you are still making alot more than the top pay of most NYPD cops!

Posted by Summergirl They accepted the jobs starting at an almost poverty level salary,
Starting salary is actually 3x the poverty guidelines.
Please let me know where someone making that salary can buy a home in a decent...not perfect or upper class just safe... Neighborhood at the lowest selling price, pay for heat, electric, water, maintain the home, food, gas, car insurance, car maintaince, school supplies, kids clothes, medical co-pays, and other NECESSARY expenses to live? For cops, it's almost impossible for the spouse to work because they work long shifts and odd hours. It makes it hard for the other partner to work around their schedule unless the spouse makes enough to cover daycare costs, which a lot don't.
My point is, it may be 3x over the national poverty level by here on the island it doesn't cover the cost of living at all.
People ***** and moan that their taxes are high and they don't want to pay for services like food stamps, Medicaid, don't want rental or two family homes in their neighborhood and so on but then don't want to pay the people who save and protect their ass... Cops, ambulance workers, and many others... A decent salary so they don't need to rely on those things.
Never said someone could buy a house at $34k. There are plenty of careers ( ask on here) where they make that same amount of money. I'm sure they would love to buy a house too but are waiting. And I'd also ask around I know plenty of cops and have a few in my family. The all have 2 income families with kids because the cop schedule many times allows partial daycare because of their "odd" schedule.
I didn't get to buy a house until I worked for 12 years and put myself through an advanced degree. So I don't see where people should expect the American dream right away. We all have to get to it over time and sometimes it gets derailed. Mine sure did when I got laid off 3 different times over my 20 year working career.
They aren't looking for an "American dream" handout. They took the job and planned their future based on a contract. The county broke their contract, illegally, for years now. They have a right to be annoyed and it isn't the same thing as the "derailed" plans you experienced. I'm sorry to anyone that encounters financial hardship. It sucks and when the economy is down, lots of people struggle. But you seem to have absolutely no sympathy for these people. No one is saying that it doesn't suck to be laid off and get no raises. It stinks and I don't wish it on anyone. But many of these workers would not have taken such low salaries without a contract stating steps in upcoming years. And despite what's been said, I don't think breaking union contracts happens ALL the time. I think unions make concessions to work with the county when they can. Or cost of living increases get frozen - it is NOT that common for steps to be frozen, and when they are, there I usually a lawsuit involved.
County workers had EVERY reason to expect their steps. It was a guaranteed thing.
and when government starts breaking one LEGALLY BINDING contract where does it end????
THIS EXACTLY !!!!!!!!!!! WHERE DOES IT STOP !!!!!????

Re: Nassau County Wage Freeze........
And I will end with this , I was in NO WAY looking for sympathy or compassion from anyone here . As some of you know just a few short years ago , I was getting myself out of a severly abusive marriage and itwas all I could do to keep a roof over mine and my childrens heads.. I know all to well about struggling and being at poverty level.
With that said , ALL I WAS SAYING was that it is so horrible to have SIGNED A CONTRACT with step raises , going from a low paying city job (NYPD) , to to Nassau (NCPD) with the SIGNED CONTRACT you'll be making xxx amount of dollars after so many years with steps in the process.. And with that BINDING CONTRACT we planned our future .
I'm sorry to the families on here who are struggling with either no job at all or low paying jobs , I truley am .
But Geez Ladies a little compassion goes a long way than standing on your
