Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
Yes, a lot of employees will be cut, and for $15/hr the jobs will be more in demand...so if you slack off you'll probably be quickly fired.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I think that if you do this it's going to cause fast food chains to raise prices and provide slower service. I would also worry about the cleanliness of fast food restaurants. I think that if you are going to raise minimum wage, you need to raise it for everyone. But as a former small business owner I can tell you that a lot of small businesses would go under if they are forced to pay $15 an hour.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
Here are my thoughts.
1. There goes fast food places being a first time job for kids in high school. We are going to see older people there now.
2. They will 100% cut hours and I also believe there will be automated ordering stations, so less salaries to pay.
3. The price of fast food will go up significantly if #2 doesn't happen.
4. If they ever decide to try and raise minimum wage to this across the board, as PP said, small businesses will suffer terribly. And as a small business owner, I cringe at the thought.
5. The fact that fast food workers will be making more then EMT, FDNY, Rookie NYPD and DSNY is mind blowing.

I completely agree, especially with #5. This country is not supporting the people who contribute most to the safety and security of this nation. This is just the tip of the iceberg in the chaos of disrespect they are facing (for the record, I do not work any of these jobs, I just value their importance).

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I'm worried about direct care workers who care for individuals with disabilities at 11$ an hour -caring for toilet ing needs and aggressive behaviors?- why do that when you can make more money in fast food?

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I see a many office jobs posted, paying 10-15 an hour and a college degree is a requirement along with relevant experience. It's a slap in the face to college educated people that want /need to work close to home or want to work only part time. The raise should be across the board, not just fast food workers. Why are fast food workers a priority and not our educated private sector workers? Everyone should be making a livable wage. The receptionists and admin assistants at our local offices will be making less than fast food workers? It just doesn't make sense.
We do buy fast food, it's not as cheap as it was. I can't imagine how expensive it will be after this raise.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I'm in the developmental disability field and worry about it too. Direct care workers wanting more we already pay ours $13 and they get raises! I already saw marketing for it.
I also saw in response to the fast food thing that McDonald's will replace 7000 employees with ordering stations. I get these workers want more money but come on it's a job many high school kids have.... So now they got their minimum wage increase but it's coming back to bite them now they won't have jobs at all at least before they were making money

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
To me a fast food job should not be a career. It is for a kid in high school who wants to earn income, or the elderly, who still want to remain active after having a career. This raise really troubles me because professions like EMTs, paralegals, home health aids, and other types of industries where you need a college degree, certifications, and real critical thinking and decision making are paying less. You are disincentivizing someone to decide to go or stay in those fields.
What will happen, you are going to see a lot of order on your own kiosks and very few employees. You are going to see make your own coffee. Preloaded donught chutes.
I think it is incredibly misguided for the legislature to demand $15/hr for a low to no skill job unless other jobs increase their salaries which will have the effect of no raise in the first place and worse, because their jobs were replaced by machines. So now things cost more, and these people have no jobs to pay for it.

This. I have a Masters degree and starting pay is not a lot for new grads.
I also see some of these aides who want raises and some deserve it but some are pathetic and need to be given the shoe.
Lastly, I hear more and more about HS students not being able to find jobs like McDs. The world is screwed up.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I don't eat fast food, but I thought the big draw was the great price. Who will pay more now?
People will vote with their feet.
This will backfire.

Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I think it is a great thing and I'm not sure why so many people are against it. The automated counters and price increases are just scare tactics. Working 40 hours a week at $15 is $600 before taxes, etc. While people like to think those jobs are only meant for high school students, the reality is a lot of people work those jobs to support their families and provide a service to people. Plus, Big Macs will not be $10 because no-one will pay that. People have been brainwashed by the 1% to believe that paying higher salaries will be catastrophic. Perhaps this will light a fire under employers' butts that they should share the wealth and provide their employees with raises, etc. instead of lining their own pockets.

This.
The reason it wasn't an across the board increase is because it's a more difficult process (politically) to make a universal change than to regulate one industry.
And if you think that McD's etc wasn't already exploring automatic stations then you are being naive. If they do that, it won't be as a response to the wage increase. Plus, they couldn't do that universally because of people who won't be able to figure out how to use it, or without also having people at the registers for payment, special orders, etc

I was at a mcdonalds in the Midwest (Maybe it was Wisconsin?) 6 months ago, and they had the ordering machines. One employee was helping anyone that needed help at the 3 terminals.
Also, at the Hertz on the same trip at the airport there was 1 physical person at the desk, and 10 terminals. The terminal connected to a webcam at a remote call center. You could either wait half hour to talk to the live person, or 3 minutes to talk to someone else in the call center.
From a business standpoint it makes sense. It is happening whether we like it or not.

I agree. And didn't fast food workers fight/strike for this? I'm sure other industries can do the same.
We want people off welfare but we don't want to pay them a living wage. You can't have one without the other.
ETA: And you have people like the CEO of DD complaining that he has to pay workers $15 an hour while he makes nearly $5k an hour. Please.
ETAA: This is also not an overnight thing. It's a gradual increase over the next 5 years.

5. The fact that fast food workers will be making more then EMT, FDNY, Rookie NYPD and DSNY is mind blowing.
Is this an actual fact? Those are also jobs with good benefits and pensions- as far as I know the average fast food worker does not get much in the way of pensions and insurance.
I feel like I already see adults working in fast food- not so many HS kids any more. I'd rather see someone with a family be able to take home a little more in pocket and not need food stamps.
But that's just coming from my own thoughts, I don't know what the impact will be economically.

I don't think so, it's just a popular meme being posted all around FB.
Just looked it up and EMTs and DSNY make only a little bit more (FDNY and NYPD make about 25% more) but like someone said, they get a pension etc., which IMHO adds much more value to those positions over fast-food workers:

FF workers working 40hrs a week at $15 an hour will have a yearly salary of $31,200 (not sure if that includes benefits, insurance, PTO, etc.)
A NYC EMT's starting base salary for the first year is $31,931. *Base salary does not reflect overtime, shift differential, meal money and benefits. Salary and vacation provisions are subject to change pursuant to collective bargaining settlements.
A NYC Firefighter's starting salary is $39,370 plus $3,704 in fringe benefits totaling $43,074. * Fringe benefits reflect overtime, holiday pay and other differentials
I keep seeing different things for NYPD starting but according to NYC.gov, it's $34,970 Starting salary (including holiday pay, uniform pay and night differential).
DSNY - The current minimum salary is $33,746 per annum. This rate is subject to change. Upon completion of 6 months employment, the salary will rise to $36,607.
Also keep in mind that FF workers will not be making $15/hr until 2020-2021 so the above starting salaries could change by then.

I completely agree. It's also naive and downright hypocritcal to say, "Get people off welfare" but "don't pay a livable wage."
And for the ridiculously inflammatory memes circulating, do some basic research. Army E1 privates earn a starting salary around $18k, but there are NUMEROUS opportunities to increase that salary some $10-40k via bonuses and additional allowances, not even including healthcare, pension, etc. And the salaries increase with years of service. Starting salary for a FDNY EMT is $31,931, again, not including benefits. And a paramedic is around $42k.
The comparisons are NOT equal and people should stop spreading false information.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?
I do not believe that a FF worker should be paid the same as a fire fighter or police officer. Making fries is much different then saving lives and putting your life at risk every single day.
And if everyone is paid this "fair" wage, be sure to notice how everything will go up and it'll be the same as it is now. Then people will want $20 an hour to make a coffee and butter. A bagel.
I'm sorry. Jobs requiring college degrees start at this point.
I'll also say again that if this goes across the board, small businesses will struggle to stay open and a lot of people will be losing jobs. And fast.
