Wait - $15 will be the MAX salary they can make? (one of the last posters just wrote that) - is that true? I am under the impression that it will be the "minimum" that they can make, and they could still get raises, etc? Someone please clarify.

I can't see that as if you are making minimum wage, you get raises too. I would like to see where it says that also.

By 2018 it would be raised in NYC and 2021 elsewhere in NY State.

If you read some of the articles, which I can find in you want. Typically the workers that were interviewed worked for 9+ years never got raises and the ones that did received one raise of 10 cents/hour.

Will they legally be allowed to get a raise? Yes. Will the boss give them raises? I highly doubt it.

I haven't seen any of those articles. Why would they stay someplace for 9 + years without a raise?

Because you need a job. because if you left, you loose all of your seniority (maybe more vacation, better days off, better schedule etc).

I finally left my old job after no raise for 4+ years.

Been with my practice for 3 years, never once have I received a raise.

I've gotten one raise in 4 years. I probably won't get another one for either a long time or at all, and I work for my dad. If I left, I wouldn't be able to find a comparable job that pays what I make with the benefits I get (which actually isn't much). Believe me. I've looked.

It's pretty naive to think that people can just get up and leave a job bc they don't get raises.

I don't think it's naive at all. I got up and walked from 3 different jobs until I found something that paid me what I knew I was worth. It wasn't easy. Not once. But I did it because I deserved more for the work I put out.

I did this living on my own supporting myself and sometimes also while supporting my mother.

It CAN be done.

ETA: I also had to work harder to get the jobs I did because I don't have a degree in my field. I had a lot of competition and was always a little nervous I'd be passed over for someone with the degrees. But, I knew my skill and sold myself/my portfolio and also offered to be tested for a day to show my work. Did what I had to so I could land the job.

There's a difference between comfortable / lazy. And not settling for less

Perhaps in your field. I have a BS and a certificate in my field (not required but did it to be able to market myself better). Things were bad at my job for awhile and I looked every day but there was nothing for more than $10-$12 an hour. With a college degree required. So some fields, yes it might be easy to just pick up and leave but it's not across the board.

can't post the picture I found with an EMS worker who just lost his battle of saving a life who is lucky if he even makes $15/hr. while someone flipping burgers wants the same or more.

I am all for a raise but $15 seems excessive. What do they make now?

Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?

We can all go back and forth all day every day as to who deserves what, whose field makes more, what field it's easier to find a job in. Everyone will have a different opinion.

and everyone is going to know someone who knows someone whose cousin is abusing the system or in a field making more than they should or less than they should.

So this is ONLY for fast food jobs? Or are they raising the minimum wage state wide?

Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?

Putting aside the issue of whether it is fair or not that FF workers be paid $15 min wage or not – just think of the impact it will have on our overall economy. The only thing that will come from this is employers reducing hours (FT employees will now lose benefits), these individuals will now have no choice but to seek medicare – even further, working PT they will most likely still be within poverty level therefore still eligible for welfare. Employers will also choose to cut positions (automating or short-staffing), in turn, unemployment will go up. It would only be a matter of time before that minimum wage regulation trickles down to small business’ who already work on a very small profit margin. These small business’ cannot absorb those costs so guess what? They are forced to close. Did you know that small business make up for 99% of all NY business’.

Just look at what has already happened in Seattle. Restaurants are closing at higher than normal rates. The state’s welfare caseload has dropped very little since the higher wage phase began in Seattle in April. If you think $15 is going to “help” our economy then you are very much mistaken.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?

As a small business not fast food, we have about 16 employees that make over $10 but under $15

If we had to give everyone raises based on an extra $3.50 an hour times 16 employees that's $116,480 a year extra.

I am pretty sure that the full $15 an hour won't be reached until 2021 so its not going to be overnight but if it was it has a very large impact especially on small business

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?

My problems is that it's ff industry only and a lot of those places are franchise and will affect small business owners

Yes. I believe they need to have over 30 locations (not sure if that's locally or nationwide or what).

Just saw this article - thought it was interesting:

Yahoo News

15 Jobs That Earn Less Than $15/Hour Article

Interesting.

What I have been arguing all along is that the general minimum wage needs to be raised. But starting with something (fast food) is good.

That's my final thought. I'll be filing my nails in the corner watching from now on Chat Icon .

I agree. I don't think there is a happy medium, however.
My opinion: a politician who is taking some executive powers to the hilt is going to come out "smelling" like a hero to some people who can't be bothered to look below the surface. Be wary of this.

Re: Thoughts on fast food minimum wage raise?

this has already been Chat Icon but I'm late to the party as usual.

In my field of dentistry it is not uncommon for Dental assistants in NY to be paid less than $15 per hour to point radiation at patients' HEADS with no formal training/education required. In healthcare it is not uncommon for CNAs to earn less than $15 per hour to wipe asses and feed, bath, cloth those who cannot take care of themselves.

I feel it is unfair and insulting to cherrypick one industry as a political tactic to win votes for a certain party.

And as a small business owner and wife and daughter of small business owners, I can see how negative this could potentially be for some small business owners.

Look at how many fast food type establishments have closed for good on LI in the last several years! What happens to all the workers that become unemployed when their restaurants close up because of reduced profits?
