Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
My ILs came home the other day....and their Clinton/Kaine lawn sign was gone. They live in an upper middle class predominantly Republican area.
Sadly for the person responsible, they keep property cameras. So they saw the girl from a local high school track team take it while she and her teammates were out for a practice run. There are two high schools in the area and my MIL called both. She sent the video footage to the athletic directors, and one identified the student. She told her coach she dumped it up the road, and the coach actually came out and retrieved it for my in-laws. Meanwhile, she's had her running outside privileges revoked and has to write a personal apology.
I personally think she should be kicked off the team - the sign was well onto their lawn, so it's both trespassing and damage of personal property, and she is damn lucky my ILs didn't call the police with the footage.
Democracy.
ETA: I am not the one responsible for her punishment - the school is. I shared my opinion because I think teens who commit crimes (during a school activity) should have to face the consequences for their actions. But frankly, I have to wonder if this wasn't a white girl in an upper middle class area, would the response from others be the same?
My MIL watches my child in her home, and will be watching my newborn there, too, soon. If nothing was done to respond to this, what's to stop the next thing to be egging the house, or poking holes in their tires, or trespassing onto their property while my kids are playing? Would all of those be okay, too? Yes, it's a sign. But it's theirs, well onto their property, and what she did was illegal. I never said she should go to jail - I don't think she should. But committing a crime while representing her school's team? I don't think a suspension or getting kicked off the team would be extreme, at all. And since it was a criminal activity, calling the cops really isn't that outlandish.

I might be in the minority, but I think it's extreme to call the police for something like that. She's a high school student, together with her friends. If that is the worst she will do, thank god! As for kicking her off the team- that's a bit much. She definitely should apologize and get some sort of penalty- whether sitting out for a few meets or something like that. But I think it's a bit much what you are suggesting!

I completely disagree. She went onto someone's property and took something that belonged to them. While doing an activity for school. At my school that would have gotten me suspended, and my ILs would have been well within their rights to report it.

Re: Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
WOW - she's a kids and its a campaign sign. This seems like a HUGE overreaction on your in-laws part (and yours). Honestly, to go to the school with security footage to search her out and try to ID her, get her temporarily banned from the team and even thinking of calling the police bc she stole a lawn campaign sign. Seriously? She's a kid...Im not saying what she did was right, but good lord to take her down, try to get her kicked off her sports team, basically ruin her HS life over a $2 lawn sign .....seems really excessive and unreasonable. And COME on with trespassing and damage of personal property, she ran on their front lawn, not broke into their house and stole a campaign sign, she didn't deface any of their property.

First of all, the sign costs far more than $2. Second of all, someone trespassed onto their property and took something of theirs. If a group of kids had egged their house, or stolen their potted plants, or other things, would they also let it go?
Second of all, they didn't call the school to "take her down", they did it to tell the school what happened, and to ask to identify her to be reimbursed for their (much more than $2) sign. The SCHOOL decided to do more than that - which is their right when a student commits A CRIME while doing a school activity.
If this was a teenage boy, would the reaction be the same? My MIL watches my toddler in her home sometimes, and will be watching my infant when s/he is born. I am not comfortable "letting it go" when a high schooler who should know better comes onto their property and takes somethings of theirs.
Frankly, I'm SHOCKED that other people don't think it's a big deal. When I told a group of friends the story, the lawyer in the group responded with "trespassing and destruction of property, she's lucky all she got was some track privileges revoked."

Wow. Did she do something wrong? Yes. But the sign was returned, she's apologizing. She didn't hurt anyone. To be KICKED OFF the team?!? Cops?!? Just wow. I highly suggest you research restorative justice. It's a concept you might find interesting, that most schools follow now. It involves TEACHING and LEARNING from instances where someone did something wrong, "violating" the communities trust, not punishing them. What would be accomplished by calling the cops?

I'm a social worker, and have worked in the education system for almost 10 years. I'm well versed with restorative justice.
I'm not the one punishing her, I was just sharing my opinion, since she committed a crime while doing a school activity. She has not been kicked off the team, and the police were not called. So really, me sharing my opinion of what should happen to someone who did something illegal is just that - an opinion.

Still completely think its an overreaction. Yes, Id also let it go if someone egged my house, Id rinse it off with a hose and go about my day.
Seriously, with the committed a crime stuff, she stole a lawn sign, she didn't break into their home. I hardly think the safety of your children is at stake.
Im sorry, you aren't going to convince me that this isn't an overreaction. Cant get behind that. I would've been like "oh look, someone stole our lawn sign" and went on my way.
Also, the gender of the student makes no difference. Also, I stand corrected....the $20 sign.

No. Not in the minority. She's a kid who did something dumb, likely as a joke. Obnoxious, yes, but I would never dream of calling anyone over something like this.
If this is the worst things she does as a teen she's a better kid than most.

I'm reacting to your opinion. I'm actually even more surprised that as an educator you would think such a severe punishment would be appropriate. As someone who is versed in restorative justice, why do you think this situation wouldn't call for that?? I'm not being snarky.

Restorative justice doesn't mean no consequences. It means accepting responsibility and working to make the situation right. Obviously this doesn't call for her to go to jail, but she still did something illegal while representing her team. RJ, to be successful, needs to acknowledge that and responsibility needs to be taken. I don't think a suspension from the team she was representing when she did something illegal is severe. These students are given the privilege of being out in the community alone to practice. If they abuse that (as she did here), they both need to accept their consequence and make it right again. That's RJ.

So if someone tried to walk out of Sephora with $20 worth of makeup - it's fine? Let it go? I never said she should go to jail. But she needs to understand that what she did was illegal, it wasn't JUST breaking school rules.

Maybe my reaction is visceral because this is where my kids play. Or because I'm 38 weeks pregnant and hormonal
I don't think she needs to go to jail. And maybe a suspension for a few games makes more sense. Definitely an apology (she's writing a letter.) But I just feel that not being able to run outside for a couple weeks is kinda...meh.

I hear you, and clearly you understand RJ. Where I disagree is that she did get a consequence - not being allowed to run outdoors. I think that's appropriate. It's a type of suspension in a way. Jmho

I agree she absolutely needs to be taught a lesson. Perhaps not suspending her from the team permanently but definitely detention and suspension from the next meet as well as formally apologizing and paying them back for the sign. Actions have consequences.

I could see the coach making her sit out the next meet, but not kicking her off of the team. To me not allowing her the privilege of off campus running and a note is an ok punishment. If it were a second offense or she was a repeated rule breaker, I am sure the school would have punished her differently. I would not go to the police over this, and frankly, think that if you escalate it you will end up making yourselves a target since hey know where you live.

The entire team got their outdoor privileges revoked for a few weeks, since they were all together. I think she needs something a bit beyond that. She's also writing an apology letter, which is fine. However, TRUE RJ would require her to make a personal apology, and she should have been the one to replace the sign to its proper place - if we're following the ideals of RJ, which the school really wasn't.
Again, I don't think she needs to go to jail, and I can acknowledge that my response is more emotional because this is my family, and a place my children spend much of their time (and as I said above, Im 38 weeks pregnant and hormonal ). But I also believe in accepting responsibility, and I don't think at the very least having a police officer speak to her about what she did would be extreme.

It's not being escalated, my in laws are at the very least somewhat satisfied. I only found out about this tonight (nobody wants to upset the very pregnant lady) so really coming here to vent was my first response to the situation!

It's def ur hormones making u see this situation that way momma, and it's totally normal, I'd probably be feeling the same, plus hysterically crying! But I'm sure if u weren't pregnant, ur social worker heart would make u see this situation in a different way. I think the girl got exactly what she needed, I'm sure the school made that decision based of what she did and also the kind of girl that she is (if she's a good student, if this is the first time doing something bad, etc.). The only thing I'd have added is have her find the sign (not the coach) and personally give it back to ur in laws.

This exactly.
I used to teach middle school and accountability was an ongoing issue. If having a police officer speak to her accomplishes the lesson that what she did was absolutely wrong, then no I don't think it's extreme. I feel for your inlaws because I imagine they feel violated having something stolen from their property.
Pulling her from the team...... Yeahhh extreme. That's a punishment, it's not a consequence.
