Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
I think it was a huge overreaction, and I don't even see what pregnancy has to do with it?? It's not like you found out these kids were drinking or shooting up heroin on their lawn. She grabbed a sign as a prank. It wasn't dangerous, just silly. Would there be the same reaction if they grabbed one of those little yellow flags you stick in the lawn when you fertilize??

Huge overreaction imo. They got the sign back the girl/ team has privileges revoked and she has to write an apology. It was a $20 sign that was returned. If the sign wasn't returned then maybe she should buy a new one.

I think your in laws and the school handled it correctly. The police are not going to do anything for a sign. In the last school board election ADULTS were stealing lawn signs. The girl was wrong to do it and probably learned her lesson. This was a stupid prank not a crime.

I will never understand why people advertise their political views, but going on the property to take something was nervy of her.

The punishment fit the crime. Her team is probably angry that she caused them to have privileges revoked, she is writing an apology and I'm sure her parents are livid. Kicking her off the team would be way over the top. Teens are stupid and they learn from their mistakes.

But frankly, I have to wonder if this wasn't a white girl in an upper middle class area, would the response from others be the same?
Why?? So you think if it was a black girl we would all agree with you and say its not punishment enough please give people more credit than that, the constant bringing race into every conversation has gotten out of hand, and I don't mean you personally I mean by society in general, some things really have nothing to do with race
as far as her punishment I think it was fine and appropriate then again I remember playing scavenger hunt as a kid and may have taken something I shouldn't have, was I a horrible kid? no, I was actually a really good kid who grew up into a decent adult, not saying its right, but I doubt they are going to come back and do something to the house that you need to be worried,

This. I'm so sick of it!!! And ftr if she was a black girl That did it. I still think it would be ridiculous to call the cops and get her kicked off the team

That's true. I didn't think about the other girls being mad at her, good point.
I talked to DH about it last night, too, and realize that for whatever reason (and that's for me to examine) my gut reaction was a bit over the top. She is a kid and did something dumb and while I definitely think she needs to accept responsibility, I think my in-laws and the school handled it well.

WOW - she's a kids and its a campaign sign. This seems like a HUGE overreaction on your in-laws part (and yours). Honestly, to go to the school with security footage to search her out and try to ID her, get her temporarily banned from the team and even thinking of calling the police bc she stole a lawn campaign sign. Seriously? She's a kid...Im not saying what she did was right, but good lord to take her down, try to get her kicked off her sports team, basically ruin her HS life over a $2 lawn sign .....seems really excessive and unreasonable. And COME on with trespassing and damage of personal property, she ran on their front lawn, not broke into their house and stole a campaign sign, she didn't deface any of their property.
I disagree. I don't care who you are, you come on my property and take something, I'm calling the police. The OP MIL just called the school, I would not have done that, I would have turned the tapes straight over to the cops. Kids today need to stop being treated like special little snowflakes and learn that they can't be brats and that there are consequences to their actions, even if they have not been raised right by their parents, which is really what this comes down to.

Your gut reaction was not over the top....you just had all the LIF liberals attacking you!!!! Good for you and good for your Inlaws. Believe me, now that that kid was kicked off the team, she might think twice before doing something like trespassing, which, by the way, is against the law!

I'm not liberal at all. I have had vandalism on my property and the police are not going to do anything for a 20 dollar lawn sign. Do you think it would be worth the time and cost for a police officer to review the tape and then go try and ID the girl? What would they do then? Press charges? go to court? The punishment she got through the school is greater than anything she would've gotten from the police.

I appreciate that, and I'm a liberal (clearly, based on the content of the sign ). I actually do think calling the cops was unnecessary (and they didn't, they called the school) but I also don't think it would have been unreasonable if they HAD - KWIM?

I actually agree with this. My thought was more that it wouldn't have been unreasonable or out of the realm of possibility for them to call the cops about trespassing and vandalism. I do think the school handled it well, and I very much appreciate that they took it seriously and responded so quickly.

You really think the police would've done anything? Highly unlikely!
I think it was a good choice to go to the school, hopefully the brat learned her lesson!

Re: Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
The fact that their outside running privileges were taken away probably means that the whole team is royally pissed at her.
The majority of us on this board were once female teenagers. We know what it's like to be a mean girl/watch a mean girl/be the victim of a mean girl.
I'd say she will be paying for this in a big way for a long, long time. So early in the school year to fck it up like that...what a shame.

You know, you are right PearlJam! Didn't think of it like that....yes, I'm sure her team is royally pissed and will go total mean girl on her for the rest of HS, hopefully she's a freshman! I'll amend my statement...the police would be too soft, her peers will punish her

Lol seriously. Going to the police would have definitely been an overreaction. It's a sign. No need to get all worked up and I think your children's lives are not in any kind of danger. Her school seemed to handle it correctly.

Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
Total over reaction. You found out who did it, they received an appropriate consequence and hopefully nothing like that will happen again. Bringing race, gender or being a liberal into this at all is absolutely ridiculous. That is problem with the world today, everyone is looking to label everything. It was a kid who did a stupid thing. End of story.

Re: Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!
What she did was wrong, absolutely. Having her kicked off the team is an overreaction. She made a stupid mistake that seems to have been rectified; she didn't drive while texting, get behind the wheel of a car drunk, physically attack someone, etc.
Regardless of the teen's race and gender, I would feel the same.
I also don't think this incident is a cause for concern either. A major difference exists between taking a lawn sign and committing a crime that causes long-term damage or physical harm.
