I think the punishment fits the crime. Kids do silly things. When I was a kid we would take everyone's lawn decorations and pick once house to be the "winner". They would get the whole blocks decorations! We thought we were funny!

Honestly that IS pretty funny Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We did the same stuff with the decorations. The best was decorating the Jewish neighbor's lawn. We thought it was funny. We also took a persian rug out of someones garbage and threw it on the neighbors car.

Kids do stupid shit. It's a little excessive to want this kid kicked off the team. Like someone else said, putting up a sign of your choice makes you a target.

WTF am I even reading with these responses. Vandalizing Jewish homes with Christmas decorations?

I'm sorry. Now I know where these kids get it from.

I agree.

Putting Christmas decorations on a Jewish person's lawn is despicable.

Honestly I can't believe this is 4 pages for a sign. So many other more important things to worry about.

I don't know, my husband is Jewish and my father was Jewish and I don't think it's so horrible. I think both of them would laugh at it. People need to lighten up. They didn't burn a cross into the lawn or spray paint a swastika on the garage door. It's probably Santa, some reindeer and a candy cane. If you are getting your panties in a bunch about that then you clearly don't have any major problems in your life.

I have plenty of "major problems in my life", and as a practicing Jew I would find this distasteful and upsetting. Call me sensitive or overreacting or whatever, but think being so blase about other people's property, space, religious and political practices....all of it is indicative of the larger cultural insensitivities plaguing this country.

1. Whether putting up a sign attracts people who would vandalize or steal it and thus "makes you a target," and whether the girl deserves to be punished are 2 separate issues entirely.

People do a lot of things that, because others are easily tempted to violate or disrespect them or their property, create "targets.". I hope we're not saying that they don't have the right or that the violators somehow deserve punishment less.

2. Two of the most inviolable, sacrosanct rights people have are 1) the right to have their homes/property respected; and 2) the right to their political views.

What kind of teenager wasn't raised to get those things at a basic level? Sorry, but this is out of bounds and deserves punishment.

I don't know one teenager who would do that.

I said the "target" comment (I said kind of makes you a target), so I'll answer. I'm just saying I personally would not put a sign or anything on my car/property because people are crazy nowadays. I just wouldn't want to deal with it. And this is why I don't put political anything in places where it could cause me problems. It's "blame the victim mentality," but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

And you're right people have the right to say their political views. No one is saying that you don't have the right.

I think the student has already gotten enough punishment for stealing a sign. Sure you raise teenagers to not do these things, but let's face it, the teenager can be rebellious and test boundaries and do stupid things. I mean I was taught not to steal and I stole a bag of M&Ms from home Ec. I got suspended and I learned my lesson. Taking her off the team for a year is extreme in my opinion.

People need to lighten up a bit. If a plastic Santa Clause on your lawn offends you, you need some serious issues to bring you back to reality.

Vandalizing someone's home with decorations that directly offends their religion is technically considered a hate crime. But it's cool that you're all so OK with this.

YES Kitten!!!! YES!
Lighten up? Don't have real problems? I think some people need to be more sensitive to issues that do not directly relate to them. Just because you know a Jewish person doesn't mean you know everything that person has been through. In my high school I had pennies thrown at me for being Jewish. While we had Christmas decorations because my dad is Catholic, if we didn't, I would take it as an insult that someone thought it was funny to put stuff on my lawn that does not represent my religion. So, no, I don't need to lighten up, other people need to stop being a$$holes and thinking they can do whatever they want.

Also, I think that the media is releasing all these images that athletes are getting away with bigger crimes, so why not let little crimes slip away. If you let someone take something off your lawn, where does it stop? It was just your personal property that people were disrespecting, no biggie right? If someone keyed your car, it's ok right because it's just a car, no harm no foul. And if someone dug a hole in your lawn, who cares, it's just grass? If you have decorations that you spent loads of money on and someone stole them, doesn't matter right? You were a target and shouldn't have things laying out.

I think this post just shows that people need to respect others property and stop letting kids get away with "stupid pranks". Unless it DIRECTLY affects you then how do you know how you would feel?

My inlaws are Jewish and I could totally see them laughing at this and pranking the neighbors right back. But, they're not religious (they had a freaking Christmas tree). I would hope the person who did this knew their audience and that the family would find it funny. Otherwise, that's pretty messed up.

Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!

You guys need to chill the f out.

We did this in the 90's. Back when people of all backgrounds laughed at everything. When everyone wasn't so damn offended. It was our neighbors. They laughed their asssses off. They eventually found out it was us. It was actually my jewish friend's parents' house we did this too and then the entire block. What the hell is the big deal? Stop trying to find something to be offended about. People that are constantly offended about something on a daily basis suck and are the problem with the world today. Remove the sticks out of your assses and find something to laugh about today. Chat Icon

I think there's a big difference between doing that to people you know and strangers. You knew your audience, so you know it wouldn't be a big deal. And it wasn't, and they laughed, so all is good. But if I woke up to a religious symbol for a different religion placed on my lawn by a stranger, I could see how that would be viewed as scary or offensive. Big difference between pranking friends and strangers

I totally agree. We would not have done that to people we didn't know for that reason. Some people would be hurt by it and I could totally understand. However, if I woke up during the holidays and found a light up menorah on my lawn, I'd be like mazel tov and laugh about it. That's just me. I am not one to take much seriously and laugh pretty much 24/7.

Re: Local track student stole my ILs campaign sign!

Serious question?

A santa/tree whatever Christmas offends a person of Jewish faith?

I always thought it just wouldn't mean anything. Like it's just a figure etc

If someone put a menorah on my lawn I would not be offended?

Not to mention- Santa, Trees, all that stuff we use to decorate for Christmas are NOT religious symbols. Not even a little. They are commercial symbols of the season.

A manger, a wise man, the baby Jesus, Mary, etc- that would be a religious symbol and might offend someone of another faith.
Not a pagan symbol like Santa or a tree.

They may be commercial symbols, but they are easily associated with a Christian holiday. I am flabbergasted that people are justifying that it is acceptable to place symbols of a Christian holiday on a Jewish persons lawn. Does anyone give even a tiny shit about how that family might feel? That they might be offended or embarassed to be singled out like that?

Actually, i disagree with this..
All symbols mentioned above are for Christmas, whether its the religious or commercial aspect of it. To those people who don't celebrate Christmas, ALL those things represent the holiday, whether religious or not.

I think the level of offense taken depends on the person though.
I know plenty of Jewish people who aren't offended by Christmas Trees or other commercial or even religious symbols. I also know some that are more religious, and could take something like a Tree or Santa left on their lawn as a very personal attack.

Which goes back to knowing your audience, and if you don't.. don't be a jerk.
Try to be a bit more sensitive and aware that others may have differing points of view.
(not directing that to anyone here)

WOW - she's a kids and its a campaign sign. This seems like a HUGE overreaction on your in-laws part (and yours). Honestly, to go to the school with security footage to search her out and try to ID her, get her temporarily banned from the team and even thinking of calling the police bc she stole a lawn campaign sign. Seriously? She's a kid...Im not saying what she did was right, but good lord to take her down, try to get her kicked off her sports team, basically ruin her HS life over a $2 lawn sign .....seems really excessive and unreasonable. And COME on with trespassing and damage of personal property, she ran on their front lawn, not broke into their house and stole a campaign sign, she didn't deface any of their property.

I agree. I think it's a reach to think the next thing will be their house being egged, items stolen or your children in jeopardy.
