DeSantis signs law requiring college faculty, students to take surveys on beliefs
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation requiring state colleges and universities to annually survey their students, faculty and staff about their beliefs to ensure "viewpoint diversity and intellectual freedom."
Why it matters: The legislation doesn't specify for what the survey results will be used, but at a press conference on Tuesday DeSantis said that schools found to be "indoctrinating" students aren't "worth tax dollars" and are "not something we’re going to be supporting going forward."
The big picture: The survey will assess the "extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented" and determine whether students, faculty and staff "feel free to express their beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom," per the legislation.
What they're saying: DeSantis said Tuesday the bills would prevent state schools from becoming “hotbeds for stale ideology."
He added it is now the "norm" for schools to be "intellectually repressive environments" that promote "orthodoxies," though he didn't specify which orthodoxies were being promoted or which schools have this problem, per the Tampa Bay Times.
What's next: The law goes into effect on July 1. The survey will be conducted annually with reports published each September, starting Sept. 1, 2022.

Re: DeSantis signs law requiring college faculty, students to take surveys on beliefs
A 2017 national survey found that while roughly seven out of 10 students felt their campus provided a supportive environment for diversity based on race, gender and religion, only about half felt that way when it came to political diversity.
Why is this wrong? Honestly from my experience of having a child in college, most colleges lean one way and don’t want to listen to other beliefs.
Why is it wrong to make sure they colleges are diverse with different beliefs allowed?

I wonder how results can even be legitimate, since people can lie. I was surprised to find out DeSantis went to Yale and Harvard.

If it is anonymous (which I didn’t read if it was or wasn’t) more people won’t lie.

So the governor is going to dictate what professors present in their lectures? That's completely ridiculous

He wants to know what these teachers are saying and teaching. From experience from my kid and friends kids, this is a big problem. Many don’t realize it because they don’t take college classes anymore nor have kids taking them.

The state should have no say is what colleges teach especially in a private school. Yes, some colleges or universities lean one way or another and that is part of the vetting process. I wouldn't go to Notre Dame and expect it to be a liberal college just like I wouldn't go to American College and expect it to be conservative. It's ludicrous and dangerous for politics to come in to the classroom. DeSantis is looking to "indoctrinate" higher education with his far right conservative views. The man signed a bill to limit the rights to protest.

Exactly! THere is zero reason for the governor to require a "survey" like this. You don't like the "leanings" of a particular school, go somewhere else.

According to the original post, the survey only applies to state schools. Just like our K-12 schools need to present a certain curriculum, I'm not sure why college would be any different.

Curriculum is fine...political leanings and ideology is not Universities and colleges have their own bureaucratic hierarchy in place for such things. I am very uncomfortable with this reach of the gov't in to higher education.

It's different for colleges because K-12 is mandatory. College is not. For the most part, there is no choice of school for K-12. College - go, don't go, choose whatever school you want, choose your major, choose your classes. It's a completely different world - as it should be

100% agree with you both.
Controlling what information flows through ANY higher institution is utterly ridiculous. College isn't mandatory and as it was mentioned, choose a college that aligns with your ideologies/values/religion/politics/etc.
And if nothing else, for God sake these are grown, young adults. They should be able to handle hearing different opinions and viewpoints without having their world blown up. I had many professors back in the day who had very obvious, very strong opinions and it was fine. Take it as a learning experience and move on. The governor has NO business trying to control ANY of what is taught at the college level, even a state school.

Not to mention, a big part of attending college is exactly that - to expand your horizons, learn to think critically about a topic, open yourself to differing viewpoints - because when you get to the "real world" it's almost guaranteed that you will have to learn to work with people from many different background with all points of view. And most colleges - particularly state schools - despite having a particular "leaning" will provide exactly that

Why do you ask? There are many other ways to be very familiar (or even more familiar) with what goes on at a college than by having a child that attends one.

There is enough feedback out there on the view points of a college and professors, classes etc. If it was that important to you or your child then you could have easily asked the questions or done the research prior to choosing that college or class or even professor. It's part of being an adult, which last time I checked isn't that what college is for? Giving your kids the skills necessary to become active adults in society? Including coming in contact with people who may have differing views.
Should we start making it mandatory to ask all employers to start reporting to the states which way they lean politically?

College is not the same as when we all went a million years ago. Once again people who have no clue and compare to their college days 20 years ago.

Yes, it is the same. Teaching is teaching. College classes are structured the same. Nothing has changed. I know you love to think you're infinitely more intelligent and experienced than everyone else on here but you're not. In fact, you are one of the most dimwitted people I've ever come across on this forum.
