A child in Jonah's daycare class has pertussis.
poor baby has been out for 4 weeks
the mother called daycare this week to report the news. since then we've gotten calls/letters from daycare and a call from the health department warning us about it.
i don't know how old this child is or what his/her immunization status is.
i am trying to work through my feelings about this, because i can't stop thinking about it.
my first instinct is to be relieved. thank God, jonah is FINE. at 13 months, he has already had three rounds of the pertussis vaccine, so he is immune.
but then i get intensely afraid, both for this child (that the outcome won't be good), and for the other infants in the class who aren't old enough to have had all the vaccines.
and lastly i get angry... which is the emotion that is lasting the longest (and is most disturbing). i'm not angry at any one person in particular... just at the idea that all it takes is one unvaccinated person (child, adult, who knows) to present a danger to so many children.
MY child could have been one of those babies under six months who were put at serious risk. and there's nothing i can do about it. i feel so helpless. this incident has hit WAY too close to home for my comfort.
please no flames. i know that vaccines are a sensitive topic. in no way do i mean to attack anyone's parenting preferences. i am just trying to sort through a situation that has been difficult for me.
thanks for listening

Re: A child in Jonah's daycare class has pertussis.
i think i understand how you feel. my DH works at an airport and every day, comes into contact with hundreds of people from other countries who do not receive the vaccines we do. he could bring home any number of diseases. i would feel SO incredibly guilty if my DS got another child sick - which is why i personally chose to stick to the immunization schedule.
i think for a lot of moms, the thought of their child possibly contracting one of these diseases is just so far-fetched that the fear of giving them too many vaccines, or the fear that the vaccine may "cause" their child to become autistic, outweighs their fear of these very rare but very deadly diseases. it's a scary thing to have to decide for any mother!

No flames here - you put into words exactly how I have been feeling for a while. DD isn't in daycare but I do worry when we go to the LICM or her classes - esp with a new baby on the way I worry about what the new baby will be exposed to esp when I hear parents saying that they won't sit home when their child is sick - and that if they are are not very sick they will take them out anyway.

Re: A child in Jonah's daycare class has pertussis.
Alex your fear is legit. Make no apologies. By virtue of your profession you know EXACTLY the ramifications of what happens when immunizations are not given. Your fears are based in professional knowledge as well as parental concern. I sincerely doubt you would get flamed.
I, on the other hand with much less information on vaccines, would be flipping MAD at the mere though that a parent might not have vaccinated their child putting him/her at risk as well as my own child and others. As you said, you don't know what the vaccination status of that child is and you may never. I would just pray that this child's parents did what they felt was his or her best interest.
DH and I talked about taking extra time off at the end of my leave in sick days to spend time with Abby. I told him that neither one of us should do that. In the event that Abby should get sick, she WILL be staying home. Being a teacher, I see all too often what happens to children when they come to school sick - they often stay just as sick or get worse. Add that to getting their classmates and teachers sick as well. I cannot tell you all how often I get sick and when I was PG, it was more times than I care to tell you. If I didn't get sick myself, I often passed colds and illnesses to DH. I swore to myself that I would not be that parent who sends their child into school/day care when they arent well. So DH and I are hoarding our sick days for that reason.
Flame ME if you will. One month in the life of an infant/toddler is a lot of time to be sick. Actually, it is for anyone.

NO flames here..but you know what sucks? my brother got pertussis from his pediatrican! adults do not keep utd on vaccines--and you will probably never know how the child got it. Believe it or not alot of times its the adults spreading it. I wonder if it was a daycare worker? If its daycare don't they require all vaccination dates? I will pray for him. My brother was o.k.It was not easy but he was o.k

If more parent's thought like this there would be way less sick kids in day care/school. It breaks my heart sometimes they way parents send their children in to day care sometimes. My personal favorite is the Tylenol/Motrin wear off. I feel like saying to the parents we spend all day long with your kids we know when they are sick and 4-6 hours after they get in and they spike a high fever we know you gave them something in the am. (sorry had to add my own personal vent )

All we are required is a current TB test.
ETA: We have a medical that states we are fit to work with children but I have never had my Dr ask if my immunizations are up to date (They are btw )

Your OB would check with all those blood vials they take. I found out I had an no immunity to chicken pox and rubella when I was pregnant with Damien so the day after he was born I received both immunizations in the hospital.

Re: A child in Jonah's daycare class has pertussis.
vaccines do not last forever and some people simply do not "take to them" ex: I know three people off the top of my head that had to get the german measles shot more then 1x. Me? it took three vaccinations. Mty body simply rejects it. We get caught up in our lives and do not go in for shots and when does a doctor ever say o.k. time for new shots! they only push the flu vaccine on adults and its 40% right and thats it... makes you wonder...

Also keep in mine, there are several booster shots to the DTaP vaccine. You are not completely immune with the 1st vaccine. So any child, whether they have began immunizations or not are still susceptible.
It is also very possible that a worker brought it in. I worked in a day care center and pre-school and neither asked me for my immunization record (that I remember).

I am sure you can get a Titer test to see if you still have the antibodies from certain vaccines in your body

I am not 100% sure what I am immune to. I would assume when they did all my blood work when I was preggy they would have told me if I needed to update any of my shots.

I completely get it---but I never got a blood test to see what i was immune to unless i was prego, every doctor should ask at every physical. We also need to ask for vaccination papers from people from other countries to cross. That sucks for that little boy--my brother was deathhhhhhhhhthy ill.

Speaking of adults keeping up-to-date on vaccines...
The first thing DS's pediatrician told me when I brought him in for his first checkup is to make sure that I get re-vaccinated for pertussis. He said it's important for all postpartum women to get vaccinated for pertussis again because when a child gets pertussis, 50% of the time the mom will test positive as well.
On a separate note, DH (who works in the medical field) purposely re-did the order of the vaccines to make DTaP first for this reason. He said it's more likely that DS would catch pertussis than say..something like Hepatitis B.
