A few questions about getting keys and moving in

We just got an estimated closing date of April 28th (Chat Icon ). This is our first house so we're not sure how it works regarding when you actually move in, or rather, when you suggest (based on your experience) we move our stuff in. So I have a couple of questions...if you could please answer any and/or all that would be a huge help!!! TIA! Chat Icon

Do you get your keys at closing?

Does that mean you can go right to the house, that it's "yours" at that point?

Should we move our stuff in that day or get the locks changed first? If not, when do we get the locks changed (or is that not even a big deal)?

Did you clean first?

Any other suggestions/helpful hints you have about the time period when you get your keys to when you actually move in? We have a toddler (he'll be around14/15 months when we move in if that matters).

Oh, and one more, I'm a SAHM for now but DH needs to schedule time off from work. He'd like to take a vacation week for move-in, so would you recommend that he take the closing day off and then the week after that for cleaning/painting/moving in...or later on? He needs to give work lots of notice.

Thanks so much!!

Re: A few questions about getting keys and moving in

Congrats on the house!

First wait for DH to put in for time off until it gets closer. We had an estimated closing date and it changed almost everyday...

2nd - most of the time yes you get the keys right there and the house is yours. There are some circumstances where the sellers says for a few days....by law I think they have 5 days before they have to pay you rent but Im not sure if that is the correct days.

We did major renovations so we didnt go in and clean and we still havent changed the locks but will at some point.

I suggest cleaning first cause even if it looks clean it is just so much nicer going into a place you know is absolutely clean.

Re: A few questions about getting keys and moving in

We got our keys at closing but the sellers decided to stay a few extra days (in the contract) after closing so we didn't get to move in right away. If there is someone currently living there, you need to find out if they will be out by closing day. If they are out by closing day, then you will get the keys and possession of the house at the end of closing.

The day we got possession of the house, we went and brought a few things with us that we would need over the next few days. We had a ton of work to do so we weren't moving in right away. We also went out and bought new locks and new toilet seats. I didn't bother to clean until the work was done and we were ready to move in.

Re: A few questions about getting keys and moving in

just to add my two cents...

If you have the ability to stay where you are currently living, go to the new house and clean and paint before you "move in". I was so anxious to move in and now I regret not taking the time to really clean and paint.

We do, so I think we'll do this. I think we're both so anxious to get out of this apt. DH wants to bring the moving van (already full) to the closing.Chat Icon

Thanks so much everyone! Chat Icon

Congrats on the house Alissa!!! Your DH should def-def-definitely take the whole day off for closing.

You do get your keys at closing. I suggest you pack a little cooler of sandwiches, a bottle of bubbly and your wedding toasting flutes (yay - you get to use them again Chat Icon) and immediately after closing - get over to your new home and toast to another new beginning for you guys.

We did demo on our house first so I really can't help you with the rest. Had we not - I would have:

1) cleaned first

2) changed locks

3) moved in

If I was your DH I'd do what you suggested - take closing day off, then the following week. I'd be too excited to wait!

Re: A few questions about getting keys and moving in

We closed on a Wednesday and picked up our keys on Saturday. (I actually flew out to San Francisco that night!)The homeowner had to pay us to stay in the house those extra days. These are all things that will be worked out with the lawyers. Your contract/closing papers will also state that the house will be broom swept.

We did a lot of work before we moved in so decide what you're going to need to do renovation wise first before cleaning.

Congrats!

Thanks Jenn!Chat Icon Would you believe we actually got 3 sets of toasting flutes at my shower and forgot to bring any of them to the wedding to use?!?! Chat Icon So I guess we'll finally use them for the first time at our new house!

Re: A few questions about getting keys and moving in

We got our keys and took possession of the house at closing (it was vacant anyway).

We moved a few things in and started cleaning/painting/ripping up carpet right away (this was a Tuesday night).

We had to be out of our apartment just four days later though!! We officially moved in that Saturday and had the locks changed that Sunday.

If we had more time to stay in the apartment while working on the house we DEFINITELY would have. So much easier to clean, paint, and do work when you don't have to worry about furniture!

Congrats and good luck!
