A friend from high school died yesterday.
She was 37 and died of cancer. Five years ago, she thought she was pregnant. It turned out she had breast cancer, started treatment, and then her husband passed away. Ever since then, she had been going back and forth to the doctor. The cancer ended up spreading and she started hospice last week. Another friend from HS flew in from California to see her. I was hesitant but I'm so glad she talked me into seeing her.
I remember we were grouped together in 8th grade when we had 1st grade buddies (As a teacher, I now know that us together was no accident!) I went to her sweet 16 and even slept over. Her Italian grandmother lived upstairs and would always want to "fatten up" this Irish girl. Her meals were delicious and full of love and I loved that Paula introduced me to such an important member in her family. Senior year, Paula and I had 1st period off and she offered to drive me to school. I would tease her because she took Union Blvd instead of Sunrise Highway. Even when I visited her last week, she said, "Wadda ya gonna do?"
RIP Paula!

Wow, what a horrible story. Im so sorry for your loss But Im so glad you were able to remember the happy times.
