Well, I think the biggest clue that we are is that while the OP wrote "Arab or Middle Easterner" it turned into a discussion about Muslims as a whole.
Outstanding point!
Arabs are people who originated from the Arabian Peninsula. 95% of Arabs are Muslim. You don't have to be Arab to be Muslim. The Middle East is a region of the world where Muslims, Christians, and Jews live. Most people haven't really got a clue about Middle East or Muslims. They hear Middle East and think of Muslims and terrorism.

Re: A question about racism
Absolutely. Its accepted and totally normal. Sometimes at the playground, once people see my DH (he's Pakistani) they try to move their kids away from my kids, or they'll just pick them up and walk away.

Re: A question about racism
Yes and yes.
I think racism is perpetuated by fear and recent terrorist acts have created more fear in our society than there probably has been in decades.

Do you think racism against Arabs and Middle easterners has become the new socially accepted way to hate
Yes, and this election has shown me how bad racism still is here. Don't get me wrong, my head is not in the sand, I still knew there was racism, I just did not realize how bad it was. I mean, people in my own family I didn't realize were racists. It REALLY has upset me greatly.
I totally agree, and I've had the same experience.

Re: A question about racism
I still see all kinds of racism with people I see every day. I absolutely agree that people hide behind the terrorism excuse just to put others down.
The more I think about it, the more I think people naturally search for a bad guy. Whether it's that one person at work, your manager or whoever, that is disliked and talked about behind their back... Or the mother in law that is rude... Or the President... Or that friend that you are thinking about cutting out of your life...
I'm starting to think that in order to think of ourselves as the good guy, we have to put down the bad guy. Whoever that person may be. The person who's skin color is not lily white. The person who doesn't speak with a perfect "American" accent.
It's like we are searching for any little thing to grasp on to, to give us an excuse. And terrorism is a huge excuse. In the name of our love for our country. Who can argue with that?

Awwww, I am so sorry this happens to you. See, this is really horrible. Awhile ago I posted that at times, I am ashamed of our country, and what I meant was to say that I am ashamed of some of the attitudes people in this country have to those from other backgrounds.

Re: A question about racism
Absolutely. I think people know so little about the Middle East that it is, for many, synonymous with muslims - which (for some) becomes synonymous with terrorism.
there is a really interesting episode of 30 days (by Morgan Spurlock) where a White Christian man from West Virginia goes to Dearborn, MI for 30 days to live as a Muslim. He has to put on traditional Muslim attire before leaving WV and in the airport he immediately gets stares, gets searched, etc.
Both presidential candidates have made appearances at churches and temples - but no mosques. It's sad.

Re: A question about racism
This is an interesting question...I think I will jump in here.
Racism is a fear of the unknown, of what never happens in our own backyard, of being different, of looking different, speaking different, and the list can go on and on....
But, what I think people sometimes fail to realize is that racism isn't only about one group of people. It is many groups of people who are reacting to one another.
Consider this : Would there be such racism/hatred towards the Middle East (Arab, Muslim, the nation of Islam) had the attacks on 9/11 taken place? Those events were done out of hatred towards Americans. So, are we as Americans to feel nothing towards a group (specifically those who bombed our country)?
I don't know....
People make and pass judgements all of the time. Life experiences or the lack there of affect the way people interact and think about other people.
I work in a school where the Dominicans hate the Puerto Ricans and both of those groups hate the Mexicans, the African-American kids throw around the N word like it is Hello, and the few white kids (I sort of feel sorry for because they really don't fit in) and then there is our Asian population (and they are ALL Smart, so they just hang together ) and then there are the Oreos, Twinkies, White Chocolates and the list can go on and on......
We try our best at providing experiences for these young men and women that will hopefully change their way of thinking. But, it is really hard to undo 14 yrs + of ideology that I had no control over.
And even though we all claim to be not racist, would you really want to be the only one like yourself in a community? How many of you would send your child to a school where he/she was the only one not like the others? Does that make you a racist?
Just some thoughts......

my DH is muslim but not arab, hes eqyptian. Doesnt practice Muslim religion but mother does.. When Dh and I got engaged, he was okay with getting married in a church b/c my mother was passed away and i felt this was a great way to include her since she was with me at my baptism, communion, confirmation.. Well the faces we got from the church and hard time everytime they heard dh was muslim.. it was disgusting.
